The Mavericks are emerging as a frontrunner for unrestricted free agent Hassan Whiteside, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Hopefully he "signs" then at the last second runs away with his tail tucked between his legs as Heat teammates tweet him pictures of cars, helicopters, ,rocket ships and bananas. Bonus points if Miami takes Hassan hostage.

I know dude wants to get his pay day, but I feel like he'd be making a mistake signing with the Mavs. He's falling into the same trap DeAndre Jordan almost did last year. This is the same team that decided to blow up their 2011 Championship team to save money. And frankly, if it comes down to the Heat having to try to match a 130+ million contract, I say the Heat should let Whiteside walk. DeMar DeRozan will be returning to Toronto this season. Terms apparently have not been finalized.
Pretty surprised the past two years they have retained their top guys in free agency.
UPDATE: 5 years, $139 million with the Raptors

You really don't know if these are bad overpayments until the new market shakes out. The Mozgov one definitely doesn't pass the smell test though.

He was overpaid. Yeah, as a center averaging 17 minutes a game. He's not going to play 17 minutes a game on a Laker squad that has nothing at C. He was a 9-10/7 guy in the 2 years prior. He's overpaid for sure. All big men who are FA get overpaid IMO. Robin Lopez signed for 4/54 last year, and their per 36 numbers are very similar. I do think R-Lo is a better defender, but they're very similar players and the cap is getting even more crazy all the time. My question was simply was it a BAD overpay (egregious)? We don't really know yet. It looks worse at face value than it is.

Well, this is how free agency looks with the new salary cap.
Sam Presti is doing the right thing. He traded Ibaka for a strong package instead of paying him this type of money to stay beyond next season. The smart GM's will follow that strategy, because I can't imagine teams improving by paying non-stars that much money even with more money to spend.

Also looks like the Heat are going to offer Whiteside a Max 4-Year Deal.
I swear, the Mavericks are just the person you flirt with to make your significant other jealous.

Free agent Nicolas Batum has reached agreement with Charlotte on a five-year, $120 million deal. He's going to make $10 million more on his contract than Kevin Love. The Cavs are just laughing about that, because holy shit, Love's contract looks like an even bigger bargain after the last day.

Woj reporting Wade isn't a lock to return to Miami. Teams stepping up interest.
I'd be shocked if he were to leave.

Jeremy Lin has agreed to a three-year, $36 million deal with the Brooklyn Nets.
According to NBA reporter Keith Pompey, the Warriors intend to match any offer for Harrison Barnes.

The problem is Presti is going to have to face this song and dance soon. He can only penny pinch for so long: Oladipo is on the last year of his contract, if he balls out, that's probably an $80 million contract. Adams is getting the max, so 100 million+. Durant and Westbrook, if they stay long term will get 30 million per year. Kanter is making $18 million Those 5 guys alone will probably count for about $120 million.

I wonder what is it about Dallas that players just don't like? Sometimes I wonder if it's Cuban that a lot of players don't want to interact with or if it's someone else within the organization that sours them on Dallas.

Sometimes I wonder if it's Cuban that a lot of players don't want to interact with or if it's someone else within the organization that sours them on Dallas. Cuban and the front office blewup their championship team in 2011 to save money. And since then the Warriors, OKC, and the Clippers have all emerged as massive roadblocks. Not to mention the perennial Spurs. They haven't been able to make it out of the First Round of the Playoffs since, so it's not an appealing look. With all that working against them, they're only going to get players who literally only care about getting a payday.

I know teams have to meet an 85% quota now with the salary cap, but MOZGOV of all people getting that big of a break... I can't stop laughing. Boy, the Lakers sure have fallen if this is the best they can do this off-season.
