10 minutes of gameplay footage are out, revealing battles give confetti and coins in place of EXP, with the former fulfilling the same role as paint in Color Splash. Can't say I'm totally surprised, a lot of the mechanics from the beginning felt inspired by the more recent titles. Well.... Yeah, this looks pretty shit.

Part of me honestly believes Nintendo is embarrassed by Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario. It's the only explanation as to why they've tried so hard to veer the franchise in a different direction despite the years of pushback from fans of the originals.

I defend Sticker Star, but the fact it sold more than Thousand Year Door ended up sending a message that those types of games are better than what we got from Paper Mario to Super Paper Mario. Sales don't mean everything.

I think it's more that even though Sticker Star sold worse everywhere else, it sold better than 64 and TTYD in Japan and that's all Nintendo cares about, despite the fact that of course it f***ing did because it was a console people actually owned.

What's amazing to me is that we're only a year removed from the a certain Intelligent Systems RPG (a tactical one at that) that strongly embraced its story elements and sold like gangbusters on Switch, while Paper Mario now seems content on being a fairly basic action/puzzle game with standard battles. I'm sure the game will be okay, but it feels like a waste of what it really could be with the developer involved.

Meanwhile, every year I hope for Camelot to not make another Mario sports game... And my hope fades.
Variety is important.

It's hard to get a grasp on Paper Mario now a days. I said before that TTYD is the Melee of RPGs in that I feel like the people that want another TTYD to the point that anything different will be rejected and ignored. On the other hand, Sticker Star and Color Splash were not well received so I don't really have anything to say that people that want TTYD again are wrong. Hell I don't think Color Splash even sold a million copies. Being on the Wii U might have had a factor to that.
I feel like they can make a good Paper Mario game without having to just do TTYD again and have a new fresh idea. I'm really hoping that this game is it, but too many people have already written it off as bad before even playing it because it's not TTYD again. I'm surprised they have not done a remake of TTYD giving that's all people seem to want.

I'm not asking for another TTYD, but there is value to building upon what it did. Bug Fables, for all its similarities to the first two Paper Mario titles, has even deeper fighting mechanics than both games, including a hard mode that can be turned off and on at any time for specific rewards. It feels with certain series like there's this Nintendo attitude where its either the exact same style game or a completely different one, with no median of evolving the core gameplay more. Star Fox has rarely ever tried to expand on the core elements of SF64, preferring to insert awkward gameplay changes in the sequels that feel shallow because they're not based on improving elements that already work. Donkey Kong fell into a irrelevant gimmicks for 10 years because Nintendo didn't know or care to really make core 2D platforming better until Retro got their hands on it. F-Zero is dead because they have no interest in doing anything with it unless there's a wholly new angle to the game they can apply. Origami King is really just a symptom of a larger problem of various mid-level Nintendo franchises not living up to their full potential because they've become subjects for excessive experimentation rather than IP's being gradually improved.

Origami King is really just a symptom of a larger problem of various mid-level Nintendo franchises not living up to their full potential because they've become subjects for excessive experimentation rather than IP's being gradually improved. So many Nintendo franchises or concepts are either rotting on the grapevine or have died a long time ago due to their constant need to reinvent the wheel as opposed to just letting people keep what they want, but as a whole, they're tone-deaf. The irony was that there were some franchises that people grew to hate or now hate because of their repetition (Mario Party in the past, New Super Mario Bros. currently) that Nintendo felt there was nothing truly wrong with, but for most, if some games in lesser series failed to meet certain standards, that means the series is a bust and kill it, or if a certain entrant sold well, that means all games from there on must apply the rules of that game, which in turn, negatively impact the future of said franchise. Star Fox is a very frustrating example for players, since Star Fox 64 was a retelling of the original game, which in turn was made into a 3DS game with Star Fox 3D, and then retold once more in Star Fox Zero. So, theoretically, someone could play the same game 4 times. And although other games in the series (Star Fox 2, Adventures, Assault, Command) have worked on building the universe and trying new ideas, Nintendo just wants to do the same thing with a new coat of paint because those new ideas always failed, in their eyes. And as a Donkey Kong fan... those years were very difficult when it seemed like they just wanted to do weird stuff with the big ape; bongo rhythm games, bongo motion controls, shoulder button only controls, Wii motion controls... In some aspects, Nintendo is pretty much like SEGA, only they're still in the console business.

I may be the only one Zach but I am very excited for Deadly Premonition 2, even with the frame rate being slower than Drew Bledsoe. I’m still going to love it, it’s true, I saw it in the coffee, clear as a crisp spring morning.

I wonder if experience points beat up a Paper Mario developer as a kid and that's why they decided to do away with them.

The way that's phrased makes it sound like it's another case of Wayforward working with an existing property rather than something actually new. If so I'm pretty curious what.

I suspect MercurySteam has taken over 2D Metroid duties and barring an unlikely sequel to a niche game like Super Princess Peach, I'm gonna guess Wario Land. Edit: And the Nintendo Twitter just clarified that its a third party property so we're back to square one.
