Mario 64 is done as of 2 hours ago. Just 70 stars but it was a hella fun speedy little run.

I think of one of the factors that affects my perception of Sunshine vs something like 64 for me is a sense that the latter is packed with every element and aspect the developers could think of while the former feels a bit more incomplete and unfinished. Not in a glitchy or bad design way; more that Sunshine is brimming with some incredibly cool ideas that just don't entirely feel like they reach their potential. FLUDD for example controls so well and allows for such a depth of movement and platforming challenges, but the lack of additional nozzles or even sections that would allow the use hover, rocket, & turbo interchangeably feels like a waste. A voice acted Mario game could be interesting, but gets utilized for an incredibly goofy story that doesn't feel it adds much. Yoshi plays decently okay, but is oddly limited by the fruit and water gimmick that never changes or evolves into something more. The range of shine missions is interesting but hampered by the rigid adherence to exact structure. Sunshine in many ways is a better game than 64, but whenever I play it, I can't help but wonder what might have been; more so than I do with 64 which camera/control issues aside, still seems like the fulfilled promise of 3D Mario. There is a loooot about Sunshine that screams that they shipped it unfinished. The Blue Coins reek of padding, they love to do missions where they can just repurpose a small section of the level from previous missions particularly for red coin ones, other parts of the levels serve basically no purpose and are completely empty, Gooper Blooper is so easy that it's like nobody playtested him yet he's the most recurring boss, Yoshi is almost entirely worthless, the alternate nozzles are pretty worthless too, there are a lot of Shine Sprites that are so obscenely unfair it's hard to believe they properly playtested them... Honestly it'd be really interesting to see what it and Wind Waker would be like if they weren't rushed to meet a deadline. They're both great games (Wind Waker's one of my favorite Zelda games, it's either it or Majora's Mask most likely) but you can see the seams in both and they both could've been so much better. The empty stages bit is honestly my biggest bugaboo with this game. On one hand you had stages that had all sorts of places to go and things to interact with like Rico Harbor and Noki Bay. Then you had stages that were mostly empty flatlands with hardly any enemies or platforming and just annoying water puzzles like, well, nearly everything else.

Making my way through 64. Gonna play in order and get 100% on all of them.
Peace out, animal crossing!

Beat Sunshine, 100%ed 64, trying to decide if I want to get right into Galaxy, see about actually finishing Sunshine for once (not feeling terribly inclined to, the Blue Coins suuuuck), or getting back to Twilight Princess or Dragon Quest first.

I know this is a super HOT TAKE, but I loathe Super Mario 64, no matter how many times I've tried to give it a chance. I remember getting the game around the time it initially came out and just being extremely disappointed. But I'm also weird and believe that Super Mario Sunshine is one of the best Mario games ever.

Is Twilight Princess worth sticking with it if you've done about 25 hours and still aren't particularly into it?

Twilight Princess is very slow-starting but I'd say if you're not feeling it by the Arbiter's Grounds then you should probably just drop it.

Apparently Clefable's barely even different shiny is in super high demand or something because I'm trying to find one while they have a 2% encounter rate and I've only once even managed to load into a Clefable fight without it just being instantly swamped with people.

Played Mario Sunshine again... and yeah... opinion's mostly unchanged.
It's a massive step down from Mario 64. They might have tightened up the camera a bit, but I find the controls way less I dunno responsive and natural.
I probably wouldn't call it awful or anything... but yeah... I doubt I'm gonna play much more of it.

I feel like I had more fun watching Pink Kitty Rose do a no damage playthrough of Sunshine than I ever do actually playing it. I just was never any good at controlling the water gimmick.
I like 64 more, even if I actually liked the DS version more to a degree.

Playing Sunshine for the first time and I can see why the game is very polarizing but I'm having fun with it.
*plays his first FLUDDless level*
Yeah, f*** this shit.

I got it for my sister whose going through a rough patch (we all are in our house but that’s neither here nor there).
I’m not excusing anything at all, I just can’t help but think what it would look like if COVID didn’t affect everything. I’m not even saying it’ll be an amazing package and we get everything people have asked for (if anything, it was going to likely have a bit more art and that’d be it, I can’t see Nintendo going through a massive overhaul of 64 and Sunshine), but it’d likely to be substantially more.
I also can’t help but think that Japan doesn’t really have a “work from home” culture like other places have adjusted to so if they’re not able to do much in the office, there isn’t much that can be done. Again, not excusing anything, just wondering what could have been.

If not, its pretty telling of how Nintendo feels about the finished product.

Like, they have been better with games and doing post release updates more so then they have previously and they have the short period of selling them altogether (because they’re likely selling them separately after the 31st March, no possible way they aren’t) to get sales going for extra incentives like improved customization options or even extra games if they feel inclined. But if they don’t do that by then, well, that’s our answer.

I like Sunshine more than I don't but I highly doubt I'll ever 100% it. The Blue Coins are just way too big of a pain in the ass and they somehow managed to make the 100 coin stars vastly worse than they were in 64 when they're already probably the worst part of that game.

I've had mixed opinions on various post-game/100% completion on Mario 3D titles, but Mario Sunshine's might actually be the worst. Mario 3D and 3D World's are repetitive sure, and Odyssey becomes tedious when going for all moons, but the blue coins are just concentrated padding with such non-reward that its never felt worth it.

Eh, I'll probably 100% Sunshine again (did it back in the Cube era) just to get both the shirt and shades from that one guy.

Every now and then, I'll give Super Mario 64 a try, whether it's the DS port or even here with 3D All-Stars and I just don't enjoy it. The controls and camera ruin the game for me and it treads into overrated territory for me. Sunshine I remember being fun, though I never did and probably won't 100% it. Love Galaxy, though.

I find it absolutely bizarre all the revisionism I'm seeing with Mario 64 DS ever since this came out. I'm seeing a ton of people going, "Oh, that version is vastly unappreciated, it's way better, they should've gone with that one!" and it just has me wondering if a lot of these people have, like... played 64 DS?
Yeah, on one hand it looks much nicer and it has a lot of new content. On the other its controls still aren't great even on the Wii U or 3DS, the character switching is very poorly implemented and makes most things much more of a chore to do than they were in 64, of the new characters Yoshi and Wario are both almost entirely worthless while Luigi completely destroys any challenge the game has, the game still does everything it can to push you toward playing as Mario most of the time even independent of that, and the camera is arguably even worse than the original. 64 DS is still good, but I don't know how on earth someone could say it's the superior version of the game unless you're just speaking entirely from it having more content.
