Oh f*** me... Results on my lunchtime... Y'all worse then Walmart You still living on the West Coast? Most of us are on the east coast, from what I can tell (Ssnakebite being the obvious exception; not sure what part of Canada Knailsic's in). That skews time a bit. Also, stop saying you'll have results posted tonight . Just do them when you can.

The Monkees - Hey Hey We're The Monkees 12. Cherry Poppin Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot 13. Spice Girls - Wannabe 14. Pokemon Theme Song
1. Mika- Love Today The singer's presence is immediate and very powerful; his singing couples very well with his showmanship. He's so upbeat and confident that it comes across as a disco or glam rock performance. The voice changes so much: quiet at times, screeching high, and filled with swagger at others. The lyrics express his qualities excellently and the guitar and rhythm section compliment without being overpowered. His voice is seductive but also very positive. His "da-da-de-da-de"s towards the end are flawless and full of energy. The whole performance has a great throwback quality and it has enough of a rock edge to keep the energy going forward. This and my second ranked song went back and forth for me, but I ultimately chose this because I thought that the performer let it all hang out here. It could've been too cheesy or too much of an imitation, but he gives off enough of a unique energy to make him distinct.
2. Del McCoury Band- Nashville Cats Not a genre that I listen to much at all. That's more on me than anything else. I love the intimacy of this performance: you're right there and there's a lot of joy going in that room. Absolutely love the singer's delivery, especially some of those long notes, like the first "Well". The lyrics are clever and very much of the region, which I find very endearing. It is very much what it is: I don't get the sense of pastiche or an attempt to sound like something, just a feeling of authenticity. The guitar picking is impressive and very catchy. I think the song fits the Round theme very well, as it is cheerful and light. The backing vocals are splendid, the fiddle solo is on point, and I just come out of the song being very happy. I love the long lyrical delivery contrasting with the chorus; it's just a great pairing. The audience adds to the performance, getting across just how fun this is.
3. Swing Out Sister- Break Out Big fan of this time period, though my tastes lean a bit to harder music. The synth beat is intricate and the vocalist, Corrine Drewery has a wonderful voice, deep and distinct. I enjoy the use of the horns, adding a fresh dimension to the sound. Her singing is enjoyable, hitting the high notes very well, and compliments the music well. The bit of rap, or at least the section with a bit of an acceleration to her voice, is performed well. It doesn't distract and it plays to her strengths. Portions of the song are very bubbly, with the flourish of the horns, that contrast well with her voice. They lyrics are very positive without being simplistic. The song trails off at the end, so I wish there was more of a build to a finish, but I'm very happy with this song. It's an unexpected choice (I was unfamiliar with the song, but I'm a fan of other bands that the band members are in, like A Certain Ratio and Magazine), and I love seeing songs from this time period being used.
4. I Fight Dragons ft. Kina Grannis- Only You Funny enough, this reminds me of the song my friend and his wife danced to at their wedding a little over a week ago. It was about Mario Cart and had the same sort of charm. This song has some of the best vocals I've heard in the competition so far, with the backing female vocals especially being enjoyable. I wish she had a bit more to do in the song, maybe a section for her own. Again, the song is charming, and very delicate. The electronic sounds add to the song in a way that doesn't distract from the vocals. It's a relaxing, very pleasant sound and somewhat of a surprise for this Round. I think its sincerity helps it avoid any sense of sappiness. It sounds very modern without losing its emotion.
5. RedOne - Don't You Need Somebody Very charming song that succeeds in achieving a large sound that the listener feels compelled to follow. The vocals have a weight to them, even if I don't think they stand out too much. It's overall a very fun song where the different vocalists interact very well. The main vocal lead and the reverberating chorus effect serves to be the strongest part of the song, a sound that I quite enjoy. The reggae Shaggy singing is a highlight and flows perfectly at its moment in the song. Everything is at a high level and has a weight to it that most of the other songs lack this Round (that's not necessarily a bad thing, as there were several songs that a degree of delicateness to them). It's a song to sing along to and it succeeds well at that level. I think that the overall effect could be more, but all its parts work well together and its great to see a song that's a bit different in terms of genre here.
6. Regina Spektor - The Calculation Love how bouncy her piano is in the song and the lyrics tell a full story (great line about the computer and the macaroni and the incisions in the body). Her voice has a great range, sounding very deep at times, but usually in a higher register. I think there's a sense of overindulgence in her runs later in the song, like I'm not sure where she's going with her voice at the end and, overall, there's a sense of ending but not really completion. Everything sounds wonderful, but it doesn't add up (and I'm aware of the irony of that in a song called "The Calculation") for me in the end. She's so musically gifted, but here, anyway, it's not adding up to what it could. There needs to be more of a build and a conclusion, so structurally this is uneven, but the positives of the song is such that I have to rank it relatively high. Very cool choice, ultimately, and maybe someone who could be double dipped later if the chance arises.
7. Def Leppard - High n Dry (Saturday Night) There's something to be said for hearing that powerful opening guitar riff in a Round with a relatively high number of softer songs. Big fan of the overall glitz and glam of the song, with the great line "and this time the lights are going out" as a standout. The musicianship is tight and the lyrics are playful in a way that the best songs of this genre attain. The sound is very catchy and the structure is classic rock 101, which is a positive for what the song wants to do. I don't know how particularly memorable this is, which hurts the song's ranking for a bit. It tells its story, but it doesn't go in particularly interesting directions. Like the excesses it celebrates, the song is too much of a good thing, and loses impact for being so over the top. Vocals are done well but they don't particularly stand out and I think that applies to the song, overall. Very good song, but it doesn't stand out enough for a round like this.
8. Chance the Rapper - Grown Ass Kid Fantastic beat and vocal effect throughout the song that matches well with, at times, very charismatic vocals. At times, I think the words meander a bit too much, but there are other moments where the vocals are very satisfying and creative. The back-up singers are very smooth and the bass and guitar notes are paced fantastically. Chance's rapping halts at times and hits notes unexpectedly. There are runs that are simply astonishing in how fluid they are. Couple them with an escalating trumpet, which fits in perfectly with the song, along with the keyboard, and the instruments are very pleasing. The sound escalates to the funny "Big Fella" dialogue, which I think loses some power for the overall song, but it is entertaining. There are moments here where the sound flows together into an incredibly fun, pleasing sound. Very entertaining and the sound lingers.
9. The B52's - Love Shack I don't know if I like Fred Schneider's vocals or not. They are really campy and work for the song. He seems very confident, even if he's not the most competent singer ever. I had a lot of fun listening to this and there's so much to it. I wasn't sure where to put this in relation to the Archies, but this song does more, even if it overdoes everything. The female vocals are fantastic: perfect for the sound. I really like the "Bang Bang on the door" section near the middle/end of the song, which I think is stronger than the better than the beginning. It kind of drags into strangeness at the end, with the wacky rusted tin roof line, which I do find cute if odd. I feel that I would want to see the B52's do better, but this song is just overplayed. Like, I think I prefer seeing lesser known songs from bands like this and the Spice Girls, than I do seeing their biggest hits. There is a risk to selecting a song like this because it is so familiar, but I want to see people go deeper in their song selection. I do like the song, but there are riskier, more rewarding songs out there.
10. The Archies - Sugar Sugar I thought about the ranking for this song for quite a bit of time. I had it higher, but I felt that other songs tried for more. The song lives up to its name: it's airy, light, and playful. The keyboard sound is a bit too repetitive for me, but I think that the guitar and bass work make up for that. There's more of a crunch to the sound than you'd expect. The voices and the lyrics get more interesting at around 1:30 and the brief female vocals add dimension to the song that I would have liked to have heard more of. It's a song that has a conclusion that's more interesting than its beginning. The vocals throughout are a highlight. I think this was a great song to use for the Round and, while I ranked it relatively low, I feel it's better than the numbers would show. Maybe a little overplayed for my tastes, but I'm a fan and I'm glad to see older songs continuing to be used.
11. The Monkees - Hey Hey We're The Monkees If this was the earworm Round, I think this would have had a good shot of getting a very high score. I just think this song is a bit of an easy pick and, while it should do well enough to help the player keep in contention, I would like to see more range. The song has a bit more of a rock edge than it might be credited with. There's a guitar and drum flourish at the 1:20 point or so that adds to its impact. The drums are pretty fast at those times. The vocals are best when they're slower, but there's a bit of nasally quality to them. There's far better musical chops to the band than their show would employ, but it's too slight for this Round. When it breaks out, though, it's very good.
12. Cherry Poppin Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot I'm probably being too critical with this song and it could be higher up. I think I would have been really wowed with a swing song that was from the actual time period referenced here. I'm not a fan of the vocals, which come off as a bit of weak in comparison to the rest of the song. This is a chancy pick because of possible comparisons, so I respect that. The drum beat is wonderful, as is some of the guitar and bass work. It is up-beat, but I don't think the lyrics match very well to the song. I like the fast guitar work at times, but the overall effect of the song doesn't stay with me. It's asking a lot for a more era-specific choice, but I think that would have done better with me. It fits the Round's theme well, but I wanted more to the song.
13. Spice Girls - Wannabe Very effervescent song and one that I've heard innumerable times. It's a bit all over the place, a bit chaotic with all the vocalists, so you feel a bit tired after hearing it. The main chorus doesn't have as much energy as other parts of the songs. Sporty's singing is the best (part of being her accent), but there's no one that's obviously the weak link. I think the main chorus after the Zing-a-Zing-a-Zing-ah part is a bit of a let down after the vocal play there. The really really want part could be used more as a lyric and less as a chorus, which drags it a bit, I think. The actual lyrics are more interesting; the friendship lyrics are pretty good, but overall the song is just too much. It's catchy, but I wanted more. Also, it's obvious. Wow me with songs of theirs that I haven't heard and I would likely rank it higher. I actually like their song, but its something that I want to see explored more with.
14. Pokemon Theme Song I wonder what this song would sound like with a Japanese vocalist? It's very catchy, but I think it suffers from the refrain, which still sounds a bit awkward. You can hum this (or could, I lack any musical ability) but it doesn't leave too much of an impression. The lyrics are a bit strained, but I enjoy the instrumentation, including the use of drums and keyboard. The ending guitar sound is quite good at times, but I think there needed to be a bit more to the end. It drags a bit; part of it is the format of the song. It's going to naturally do that as a theme, but it's hard to overlook that with the rest of the songs being of a high quality.

Yay! Time for my reviews:
1. Cherry Poppin Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot 2. Regina Spektor - The Calculation 3. Def Leppard - High n Dry (Saturday Night) 4. MIKA - Love Today 5. RedOne - Don't You Need Somebody 6. Swing Out Sister - Breakout 7. Chance the Rapper - Grown Ass Kid 8. Spice Girls - Wannabe 9. Pokemon Theme Song 10. The Archies - Sugar Sugar 11. The Monkees - Hey Hey We're The Monkees 12. The B52's - Love Shack 13. I Fight Dragons (feat. Kina Grannis) - With You 14. Del McCoury Band - Nashville Cats
The Archies - Sugar Sugar
One of the all-tim feel-good classics, it still holds up. Even if you're not into this type of music, you can't help but find it catchy. A very good pick for this theme.
The B52's - Love Shack
A very energetic song with a repetitive beat that makes it ripe for a summer hit for people to dance to. However, it feels a bit too generic for my taste. It sounds more like a TV show theme tune than a song you'd listen to on its own.
Chance the Rapper - Grown Ass Kid
It sounds very unique and is very relaxing, it's pretty refreshing to hear this more upbeat side of rap. And interestingly, when I listened to it the first time, I thought it was just okay, nothing special, but as I kept listening to it, I liked it more and more and kept pushing it up the list.
Cherry Poppin Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot
(Well that's one Hell of a band name) You know, when the song started, I thought I would only like it just okay but as it went on, I grew to love it more and more and I've got to admit, I'm a sucker for this kind of retro stuff with a modern twist (I may have mentioned that appreoximatively 784 times already) and this one really works for me.
Def Leppard - High n Dry (Saturday Night)
Another classic and an excellent one. It's one of those songs that really immediatelypumps you up, the kind of stuff you can play when you feel down and immediately it motivates you to get back on track. Love it.
Del McCoury Band - Nashville Cats
Yyyeah... this is the kind of country music I don't like. It's not even like it's terrible anything but this howling over banjos style really isn't for me. To me, good country music is the growling, visceral style and this is about as far to this as it gets.
I Fight Dragons (feat. Kina Grannis) - With You
The song opened with some interesting, almost chiptune-style music, which made me think we were in for something unique, but then the singing started and it turned out to be the most generic sappy pop song ever.
MIKA - Love Today
Oh boy, this song was everywhere a few years ago and honestly, it's not hard to see why as it's incredibly catchy and it's near impossible to stay in a bad mood after listening to this song.
The Monkees - Hey Hey We're The Monkees
This is certainly a peppy tune and very representative of its era and its band. However, like many things with The Monkees, the song does have an "off-brand Beatles" feel to it. So it's good, but not enough to grab a high spot on the list.
Pokemon Theme Song
Gee, talk about a nostalgia trip (even though the French dub had translated lyrics s it's not quite the version I grew up with) and I've got to say, this theme song is in my opinion the best thing about this show. In fact, part of me can't shake off the feeling that the show wouldn't have been nearly as succesful if it weren't for the song pumping kids up because let's be honest, the show is... okay at best.
But hey, that goes to show what a good theme it is and indeed, after all these years, it still gets me excited. However, you could have chosen even better as we all know the best Pokémon song of all is Show Me Around.
RedOne - Don't You Need Somebody
That's gotta be the surprise of the round for me. When it started, I thought it was going to be some generic summer song stuff but it's actually really fun, something that really makes you want to dance and sing along to. Very good pick.
Regina Spektor - The Calculation
Now that's interesting. It sounds like many other pop songs, however, there is a lot more personality in it than in most. Spektor really manages to give it her own style which makes it stand out and turns something that could have been bland and overdone into something fresh and new that you couldn't mistake for anyone else's work.
She also has impressive control of her voice and uses that to give her singing a unique and very sound, switching quickly and harmoniously between high and low pitch.
Spice Girls - Wannabe
Geesh, it's like the nostalgia special this round. Anyway, the Spice Girls always struck me as one of the best Girl bands around, even as a little boy. Whereas most of them feel very manufactured and forced, there was always something very genuine about them and it doesn't hurt that they can actually sing and have a lot of charisma, as this song proves because while it may have 90's all over it, it still stands the test of time.
Swing Out Sister - Breakout
My God, that video is the most 80's thing I've seen since Breakin'. But we're not here to talk about that, we're here for the song and this is a very good one. Oddly for a pop song of that time and with that video, it doesn't actually feel much like the average song of its time which I think really helps it. Not that I have anything against 80's music, it's just that I think it helps it stand out and age more gracefully than most.
