IMO, if Shawn left after SS and Bret stayed, WWE may have died as the Mr. McMahon character would not (most likely) gone on to become what it was, and Austin wouldn't have had that character to feed off of. Take away those 2 things, and I doubt WWE lasts another 2 years. Other side, maybe Shawn goes to WCW, and a bunch of the younger and underutilized talent realizes they'll never get a fair shot in WCW and goes to WWF which could have focused on having the best, young in-ring talent. Still, if Shawn leaves and there's no Montreal, the WWF probably doesn't survive. Montreal set up way too many things for WWF's success. They'd sown the seeds for the Mr. McMahon character before Montreal with his heel run in Memphis, Bret and Diesel directing their ire at Vince on air and the heel Jim Ross character airing dirty laundry about his treatment by Vince in public, outing him as owner in the process, there's also the absolutely dickish stuff 'face' Vince did like the Melanie Pillman interview. Eric Bischoff was over as a heel authority figure in WCW and the WWF were copying just about everything they could from WCW, from factions to cruiserweights so it was never a matter of if Vince would turn heel, but when, Montreal just accelerated the process as trying to paint Vince as the wronged party went over like a fart in church.

I disagree, they had already set up that the brass didn't like Austin, and he didn't give a shit. All they would have had to do was had Vince go to Bret and say that he's the chosen champion, he's the right one to hold the title, and they're set. You would have had Austin vs Bret (a guy he never beat) and Vince, and Vince brings in Tyson to make sure Austin doesn't win. Bret would have lost, taken a couple of months off, returned for the rematch at SummerSlam where he refuses Vince's help, and Austin and Bret form an uneasy alliance to go against Vince, The Brothers of Destruction, Foley (until he was screwed and joined Austin and Bret), The Rock, and The Corporation. Owen or Bulldog would have went face to help out Bret, Austin, and Foley. And Shawn wasn't too much of a WWE guy to go to WCW, Taker was because he never thought about leaving. Shawn kept trying to get Vince to let him leave, that's not what Taker did. I hear ya, but still, the Mr. McMahon character evolved so much from screwing Bret. If Bret goes over clean and stays with the company, it's the status quo with Bret, there's no "You screwed Bret" chants and blurred lines of what's real and what's not with Vince's evil boss character, and Shawn is looked at as just another sell out.
