So, the new season's premiere date isn't available yet. But there's been some pretty big news, as Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah will NOT be returning. tvline.com/2016/08/08/snl-season-42-taran-killam-jay-pharoah-leaving-saturday-night-live/Taran's apparently gonna be busy directing a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Feel free to discuss your favorite sketches, impressions, or characters from these 2 men who have been with the show since 2010. And also don't be afraid to speculate on the new season. The only people we know for certain are returning are Michael Che and Colin Jost. I'm super-thrilled about that, as Weekend Update under these 2 men was THE highlight of SNL for me last season.

The last few seasons, despite the show becoming much more watchable, the highlight of SNL has been Colin and Michael. They have amazing chemistry, and Che's delivery is impeccable. I'm legit jealous, to quote the first Weekend Update host.

I'm very bummed out. Killam is the most versatile performer on the show. He's acting's equivalent of a hoss. Pharoah barely scratched the surface but he is definitely an impressions guy and will have a good career. I could see him being a sidekick in movies. As for my favorite sketches. I'll just say this.

Jay leaving pisses me off, because the show never really figured out how to use him. He should have been a borderline breakout star.

tk has a lot of work in Hollywood and will do fine, but imo the shows gone downhill the last few years and he was the star for me.
Jay is probably gonna be a niche guy elsewhere.

I love Jay Pharoah and Taran Killam, so this makes me sad. Pharoah was the best impressionist they had, IMO, since Darrell Hammond. Apparently, both were outright fired instead of leaving on their own, even though Killam only had one year left on his contract anyway.
Wonder who they get to play President Obama now. I guess Michael Che who's a really funny guy and I'd like to see him get more involved with SNL beyond Weekend Update but I have no idea what his skill is at impressions. Please not Kenan Thompson.

To be fair, SNL premires in mid September, and with Obama leaving in November, I think the loss in that regard will be minimum. I really hope the show can make better use of Vanessa Bayer and Pete Davidson. My biggest fear is that they're going to completely focus the show on Kate McKinnon (or what I like to refer to as going full "Kristen Wiig" with her)

Funny as I am the opposite when it comes to Weekend Update. Besides the guests. It's even more political than before...which can be annoying.

I just hope this opens up the door for more Bruce Chandling appearances on Weekend Update.

I found both painfully unfunny. I agree with you about McKinnon. Bayer, Jones, and Strong are all better than her in my eyes. Though Jones has completely taken off with the Ghostbusters role, and even if she comes back, I can't see her staying more than this year. I also think Davidson is a star. They don't use him that much, but he usually shines like in the skit with the Rock and the one where he's on trial about having sex with his teacher.

That stereotype gets grating very quickly.

For a long time, the rule in entertainment here has been to find something that catches on, and do only that. Rinse, repeat.

That stereotype gets grating very quickly. I don't know I think her schtick is alright, I always get a laugh from her Weekend Update segments, they're pretty much stand up comedy bits and that's just her comedic voice. Jay Pharoah never really did much for me, his impressions were amazing but they never really translated to anything that made me laugh. I don't think SNL has ever done anything funny with Obama no matter who was playing him.

The Killam departure is shocking. He was their everyman after Jason Sudeikis left and I'm curious who's going to become that guy this season. My guess is Beck Bennett.

The only memorable thing I recall him doing was the Dirty Dancing charades gone horribly wrong. Legit surprised by the departures of the other two. I figured at the very least they keep Pharoah until after the Election. As for Killam, I figured after the departures of Wiig, Sudeikis, Samberg and Armisen a couple of years ago that him and McKinnon would be the stars. McKinnon has gotten there. I figure they'll have solid careers. Not sure about Rudnitsky. Didn't see enough to really have a strong opinion.

Taran really should have been the guy to lead the show once Sudeikis, Hader, Wiig, Samberg, and Armisen left. Jay Pharoah was a great impressionist, and his Rapper/Comedian Summits were both hysterical. Who is going to play Obama now?
And Rudnitsky was admittedly pretty bad in most of his sketches, but his Dirty Dancing bit was a showstealer.
