I still don't get how they thought Austin vs Steve Williams was a good idea Not a chance in hell they'd waste 98 Stone Cold on Dr Death. No one gave a shit about him prior to this, and no one would have given a shit about him if he won. Same way no one gave a f*** about Bart Gunn once he won. This was the Monday Night Wars. You don't just hand out feuds to people who aren't massively over cause they have a friend in management and did something (that no one in the then current day audience knows about) in another fed years prior. What feud is being cut short for Austin - Williams? Highway to Hell? Kane-Taker-Austin? The Deadly Game tournament? Is shitty ass Dr Death going to main event St Valentines Day Massacre? This was before Vince had 30 shitty Hollywood writers to try and convince himself he wasn't the carny that he is, so shit wasn't just being thrown against the wall to see what sticks. Also, like I said this was during the peak of the MNW. Not one week could be wasted to give some nobody a main event against the biggest name in the company as a favor to an executive. Let alone an actual program. The only possible way would be if Dr Death was to get majorly over, and that was never ever going to happen. I don't know why this dumb supposed idea annoys me so much, but it does. I think cause its just pure delusion...

Bare in mind JR was at the peak of his influence at the time, and he was big on both Austin and Williams.

I love that JR by all accounts was pissed that Bart beat Williams. I wish there could have been a camera in place to catch his reaction when Williams went down.
"Aww, son of a hitch!"
(leaving auto-correct intact because it makes it funnier)

Their punishment of Bart Gunn was one of the worst things they've ever done. The poor guy went and won the competition only to be decapitated at WM. Utterly stupid. Now granted, he wouldn't have been a star anyway, but doing that to him was just petulant bastardry.
Still, we got JBL knocked out, and not just knocked out, but falling flat on his face. If it's true that the BfA was created just because of his boasting about being able to beat anyone on the roster in a legit fight, it's all the more hilarious.

If they wanted to push Dr Death as a legit badass, why not just bring him in with a gimmick of punching the f*** out of everyone to TKO finishes for 3 months and then just book him against Austin?

They should have at least TRIED with Bart Gunn. Like, even Bart vs Shamrock who won KOTR that year in a one month feud or something.

Seeing known wrestlers fighting for real and getting knockout for real was great. The main problem I had was that trying to take down guys with boxing gloves wasn't the best idea, it kept sleeping. That wasn't well thought out. It could have been just kick boxing, go in there, punch and kick and see who's the toughest. But overall I liked it. Bart Gunn was awesome. I wished it had continued. The bad idea was having a pro wrestler fight Butterbean.

Because that would be a completely logical wrestling angle. Naturally Russo wouldn't understand any of it.

This was always one of those "fever dream" moments for me; I used to only be able to watch the recap shows at my grandparents' house (in another room) on Saturday mornings, so I remember only some of this in passing. But I remember it being hyped up on Livewire and Shotgun Challenge (the previous week's Shotgun Saturday Night matches with current recaps that aired in the afternoon), and it always just seemed weird.
See, I was a young enough kid at the time to still think pro wrestling, for the most part, was real (it also helped I knew very little about wrestling history, so I never knew many of the characters that couldn't possibly be a shoot). And this was the first time I watched it and began to REALLY believe it was all bullshit. It made no sense to me how pro wrestlers, who could take ALL this punishment and all of these slams and punches and high-flying moves could suddenly be taken out by a couple lucky punches. I knew of MMA, but always thought "well, they're boxers and karate experts, they're not wrestlers". But then here comes the BfA with wrestlers doing (essentially) MMA and suddenly being KO'd by these normal moves when they'd have matches where they'd be conscious within two seconds of taking a chair to the back of the head.
I know pro wrestling pretty much jumps the line between kayfabe and shoot like a jump rope, but this just hurts the credibility of your own damn product and the people involved in it. Why bother hurting your product like that? What benefit could you have possibly profited on?

Was that Butterbean match a punnishment? I thought it was just a stupid idea but nothing more. This is the same company that wanted to have Daniel Bryan murked by Brock Lesnar on live PPV for the crime of getting over. And they followed through with the original plan with Cena which worked out beautifully. It's one of those things that was the right call on hindsight in reestablishing Brock Lesnar after his disastrous first two years of having his momentum killed by HHH regardless who was the champion. It's more effective seeing Superman getting killed by Doomsday in a squash then say Green Lantern but it would of been pretty effective still. They did nearly ruin it the next PPV though.

It's more effective seeing Superman getting killed by Doomsday in a squash then say Green Lantern but it would of been pretty effective still. They did nearly ruin it the next PPV though. It's funny, because him doing to Cena, the franchise player of the last 10 years, came as a much bigger shock than if he had done it Daniel Bryan, under-sized underdog champion. But, on the other hand, it took all the ill-will and hatred that Brock had from ending Undertaker's Wrestlemania streak, and nullified it. Brock should have been the biggest heel of the generation, and instead became a popular anti-hero because he knocked John Cena out of the main event scene. But going back to the Brawl for All, even if Dr. Death ran through the Brawl for All, what's he going to do when he gets to Austin? He's not going to be doing any stiff strikes or throwing him around with suplexes, because this is still the same Austin who's putting off neck surgery. He'd end up doing the same punch-kick-crowdfighting match that everyone did with Austin, but without all the character that guys like Taker and Rock and Foley had to make it entertaining.

This is the same company that told Ryder he'd better get himself over because they weren't gonna bother, gave him zero TV time, he, somehow gets himself over via Youtube and the Internet, so his reward was being made an ass of. Bart got off lucky just being punched in mush by Butterbean.

Brawl for All didn't have to be stupid. They could have waited it out a bit longer, had real boxing coaches helped train some of the guys, and made better rules. I mean, even then it still would have been a bit dumb, but it could have been better at least.

There's no way Brawl For All wouldn't have sucked, let's be real.
This was NINE WEEKS.
NINE WEEKS of a televised bar fight THAT WASN'T IN A BAR, BUT IN A WRESTLING RING.
How can you have a bar fight in boxing gloves and "Awarding points?"
It's like three half-baked ideas all thrown together into one, and that's without even factoring in the whole "this is the real art of the show / this is fake" non-sensical aspect.
