Rather surprised that even with the classy remarks at the end, people are still doing the "lol, what an idiot" thing. I know we're meant to go all Nelson Muntz on Punk now, and apparently he's also the devil incarnate because he has personality problems and money, but if you want a better example of genuine, from-the-heart remarks explaining a person's motivation (and right after that person got the crap beat out of him, no less), I really don't know what to tell you. It's funny how people want to hang Punk out to dry because Phil Brooks is an asshole and doesn't hide that fact and/or because he's "bitter".....by being bitter assholes who mock him for chasing a dream. Irony is super thick with that one ya know?

But realistically, you don't say "I've never fought before, I've never even trained like that before, but I should go DIRECTLY TO THE BIGGEST PROMOTION IN THE WORLD when I do, dammit."

Even Brock had to work his way up when he did his UFC run.

Hey, even though I thought he was a bit foolish, I was rooting for the guy. But Punk being the way he is, schadenfreude comes with the territory.

Go big or go home. And, Dana's the boss...it's not like he couldn't have, ya know, passed. And, had that happened...had Dana passed...the test then is does Punk still train, still try to fight, then work his way up...make Dana stand up, take notice, and bring him in? I like to think the answer to that is "Yes." But, it's a hypothetical. We'll never know.

Just going to say this, most of the people mocking him would've tapped while screaming for help around the second punch. That's assuming I'd be stupid enough to step into the octagon with no fighting experience in the first place.

I would hope they don't, it'd be unnecessary piling on. He got his ass beat; anyone not delusional knew he was gonna get his ass beat, just leave it at that.

I can appreciate the criticism that Punk leveraged his celebrity status into a UFC deal rather than cutting his teeth in some lesser promotion, but at the same time, I think it's admirable that this guy - at 37 - gave his dream a shot.
The odds were against him from the jump and he was so out of his depths, but it took guts.

I have literally just spent the last 20 minutes arguing with a "real" wrestler about Punk "being a back yard wrestling mark" while shooting on about how HE was "trained by REAL people who have wrestled on TV"
So, ya know, when I throw out Ace Steel, etc and literally (though, politely) rip his argument to f***ing shreds he dismissively calls me a "tough guy" and tells me to "get in the ring" and he'll "smarten me up."
I have now, for the first time ever I can recall, come across the biggest mark for the business possible. f***ing douchebags somehow think "Oh, I was trained by so and so and wrestle in front of 50 people in a high school gym i'm WAY more legit than ANYBODY who started out as a lame backyard wrestler" is a badge of honor and makes them superior to people like Punk...and the Hardy's....
I've really gotta stop browsing wrestling discussions outside of FAN....at least you people aren't f***ing delusional. I might not always agree with all of you, but I give you ALL credit for not being marks for yourself and delusional.

I will say though, like I said in the ppv thread: people comparing him to Rock are off base. Rock had succeeded at the highest level in wrestling and was one of the biggest draws in history. For a UFC comparison, Rock would = Chuck Lidell coming back or something.
Punk is to UFC what David Arquette was to wrestling: Nice guy, talented, succeeded in another area entirely; but never shoulda been in the ring/octagon.

LOOK IN MY EYES WHAT DO YOU SEE A FIGHT THAT'S NOT IN THE UFC There was no chance of him getting another UFC fight given the utter destruction. The curiosity factor buys are gone. Hell, I'll at least give Dana credit for not putting him out there again to get potentially hurt; granted, he shouldn't have done it the first time.

Sure, Arquette took bumps and the like, Punk has trained nonstop for two years. Punk was out of his depths, but surely not for lack of effort.

Dana be all like Until he sees the buy rate.... Dana did relent on Gall using "Hey Mickey" as his theme after initially rejecting it because it didn't "fit" or something like that.
