Early reactions have been almost universally positive, with particular praise for Glover and Ehrenreich. Yeah I don’t want to open old wounds but the early reviews for the Last Jedi were all scoring it in the mid-90 out of 100 range And deservedly so.

There are some areas of the Star Wars timeline where parsing Disney & Legends canon gets tricky, because there are conflicts and you'd have to ignore older stories (which can be problematic if you like them both) but usually as long as it's well done I don't mind. And for some reason the ANH to ESB years seemed so chock full of adventures already that stuffing more in there barely changes much of anything - it's 3 years, a lot can happen. The Lando story didn't conflict with very much, if anything, that had existed before and was pretty solid. I definitely don't mind that kinda stuff. My problematic area is post-ROTJ, which got completely erased. Dark Empire, Heir to the Empire.....gone. Bleh. Let's also not look at the Legends EU with nostalgia blinders, either. There was a lot of absolute garbage in the Legends continuity and it being gone from the canon I think is addition by subtraction. Like anything involving the Yevetha and the Yuuzhan Vong, anything written by Kevin J. Anderson besides the Tales of the Jedi comics about Ulic Qel-Droma and Exar Kun, Darth "My Cape Has Turned Against Me" Caedus, the half-a-dozen conflicting storylines about who really stole the Death Star plans, Palpatine's three-eyed son, Callista, etc. With only a handful of exception, the further the old EU got away from the core characters and events from the OT the worse things got.

The strongest parts of the EU were either thousands of years before the events of the movies or around the same timespan as the movies. Author-wise, anything by Zahn, Stover, Stackpole, or Allston tended to be solid while everyone else was a mixed bag, with KJA and Traviss being way more miss than hit. The Legacy comics, set a good hundred+ years after the OT, were also interesting, mostly because of the split of the new Galactic Empire between the Fel Empire (who were ruled by the descendants of Jagged Fel and likely Jaina Solo) and the Sith Empire ruled by Darth Krayt. It was interesting since the Fel Empire, while still authoritarian and without any real democracy, was also a mostly benevolent government that even had its own Jedi Order analogue in the Imperial Knights, and like the Jedi they rejected the Dark Side. Meanwhile the Krayt Empire was what you'd expect from an Empire ruled by Sith Lords. The other interesting thing about the Imperial Knights is that they were sworn to serve the Imperial Throne, but also acted on a check on the sitting Emperor or Empress. If the sitting Emperor fell to the Dark Side, the Imperial Knights were duty bound to either bring them back to the light, or oust them from power.

I'm really excited for this, so I'm glad it's getting positive reviews. I love that we've got a classic director like Ron Howard at the helm, too. I think his style will fit in really well in a pre-ANH Han Solo story.

The divide between fans and critics on The Last Jedi was pretty surprising. I wonder if the same will happen with Solo.

If nothing else was changed except recasting Luke as more of an Obi-Wan figure and I guarantee you the divide would be a lot closer. As long as Han, Chewie and Lando remain consistent with what fans expect from their characters I'm sure this will be fine.

Junking the whole thing stunk, because they were tossing the good out with the bad, but there was a lot of.....bad, weird, odd. But even then, I stopped reading the novels timeline when they reached the Yuuzhan Vong (literally stopped reading a few chapters into Vector Prime), so there's little in the EU for me (barring some one-shot books and a few Dark Horse comics) beyond that for me. ........although how dare you slight Trioculus. How dare you.

As someone initially excited for Alden's casting (because of Hail, Caesar) and then disillusioned because of all the rumors, im excited again to hear his portrayal is getting praise.

How dare you. The good news is that at least they're slowly bringing back the neat things about the old EU except for the obvious ones that completely conflict with the new movies, like Jaina Solo. Like Rebels alone brought back two of my favorite things about the old EU in one season: Thrawn and the TIE Defender starfighter. I also loved seeing the KOTOR era-inspired Hammerhead ship make its appearance in Rogue One.

And yet wouldn't you know it......the latest wave of Black Series figures to hit stores features Jaina Solo. As a huge fan of that old TIE Fighter PC game, I loved seeing the TIE Defender in Rebels....as well as the program's inevitable demise there, which kinda mirrored why they went away in the game too.

I saw it last night. Without giving anything away, I'll say I enjoyed it, but I can see how some people will not like it. How's that for cryptic? It's definitely the most "Marvel" of the new Star Wars movies, which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you ask.

I've been trying to find a credible source, but apparently Kathleen Kennedy has said that the next Star Wars Story movie will indeed be about Lando.......

There were articles making the rounds a few days ago that said it's all but confirmed that the Obi-Wan movie will be going into production in April next year. But who knows.

Yeah, the more I read the more I saw confusion about this Lando revelation. Someone interviewed Kennedy and she said it'd be the next movie, then there's talk of LucasFilm saying she never said it ('twas a "miscommunication"). Twitter took off with it quick, though, albeit without any linked articles (from credible main sources). So this may've been a hoax of some sort.

So the general consensus so far seems to be that while it won’t set the world ablaze, it’s at least an entertaining and fun movie. And of course, they’re saying that Donald Glover is the MVP (which is why they’re talking about making a solo Lando movie in the future).

For this to be a Han Solo movie, it seems weird that a lot of the marketing is centered around Lando...

Which I can certainly understand as you said he's one of the biggest names in all of entertainment right now (how weird does that sound?).

I remember when Donald Glover was just that nerdy dude from Community who was also a good standup comic. Now he's an absolute force in the entertainment industry in nearly every single aspect of it.
Between him and Jordan Peele, it's been a really good time for guys I've been a big fan of.
