AS long as it doesn't lead to them rewriting what's already been written or hitting reset like they've done multiple times with Spiderman I don't care. Yeah I know different studios did the Spidermen movies but you know what I mean. I want one continuous continuity. Not five Origins stories that tell the same thing with minor differences Oh, God. I actually thought about mentioning the dreaded reboot but couldn't. Besides, some things are better told simply off hand, like "I was a hotshot, I dropped out of the Academy, and I became a smuggler because the money was good and I controlled the schedule".

It’s going to be the elephant in the room for years But just little things: Han met Chewie when he was being fed to him. Okay, leave it. Luke Skywalker is dead. Okay, leave it. Jar Jar Binks put forward the motion to give Supreme Chancellor Papatine power. Okay, leave it. Anakin Skywalker was an emo bitch. Okay, leave it. Some of it was bad and some of it I don’t agree with, but leave it.

I'm surprised it's flopping because I do think it is a good movie. Maybe it's suffering because of the polarising TLJ? Or it's been released at the wrong time because at the moment, everything... The ads and stuff, has been all about Infinity War, Deadpool and Jurassic World. Solo seems to have been lost in the pile. Honestly, the lionization that studios do these days during big moviegoing seasons certainly hurts. Black Panther got to make lots of money because it was released around a time period where studios release turkeys and wash their hands off, and it was an oasis in a desert of crap. That's actually sort of shifted. Deadpool and the Fifty Shades franchise were February releases as well as Black Panther. It came out in September. Captain Marvel is coming out next March. Much like TV, the paradigm has begun to shift from strict "seasons" to just finding the right time to drop it. Disney would have probably fared much better off putting this one out in the fall, especially when they had to have known that Infinity War was going to win the summer season right off the bat.

Really I don't get why they didn't at least wait for the end of July. This summer is super front-loaded and after Ant-Man in the first week, which is kind of C-list Marvel anyway, there's basically nothing of consequence for the rest of the summer. Guess that'd put it rather close to Christopher Robin, but it's not like they'd be playing to the same audiences.

"We are all over it, and will spend a lot of time digging into why things happened the way they did. We have a year and a half before Episode IX comes out," says Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis about #Solo box office

Saw it last night.
I'll give the movie some credit for being better than I expected but it still felt meh and totally unnecessary as well.

Saw it yesterday and had a blast. Is it two hours of inconsequential fan service? Absolutely. But is it also a lot of FUN with good pacing, memorable characters and amusing story beats? Also yes. I'll take this over Last Jedi pissing over my childhood any day.
By the way, since when is a 114 million opening weekend considered a "flop"?

When they had 4 straight billion dollar movies and this one is projected to be half that. Not to forget they reshot almost the entire movie last fall.

Brought in nowhere remotely close to what it was expected to or what the movies before it did, it also had a weak international opening with Japan as the only notable market left, and the movie has such a huge budget, even before the reshoots and promotion costs, that it's now probably not going to break even. That's pretty firmly a flop.

If it really fails to break even, I will agree with calling it a flop.

Budget was $250M, consider some advertising budget on top of that and this sort of money just isnt big enough, so 'flop'

Really shocked it's getting such a lukewarm response. It's fun. Good action scenes and some good humour. I also liked seeing new parts of the Star Wars Universe we haven't seen before.

With the advertising costs, Solo needs to get $500 million just to break even, let alone start making money. Its opening weekend didn't make a dent in that and its domestic and foreign grosses are the opposite of what studios want to see (62% of the weekend was in the US, indicating no demand at all from foreign markets. For contrast, Infinity War's domestic haul is the 6th largest of all time and only 33% of its total take). Its Cinemascore is a decent A-, but the overall reaction seems to be "It's ok" not "Holy shit, run out and see this right now!", so word of mouth likely won't help it.

That's really the scary part about where the film and video game industries are at right now; there's very, very little room for a solid hit, things need to either be enormous blockbusters that have the ability to bust through the billion dollar threshold (or the however many million units sold threshold for games), or they have to be small, cheap films that can turn a safe profit. The days of the mid-level hit are seemingly gone, with a few rare exceptions, and that's a dangerous bubble for these industries to keep living on.

Took my nephew to see it. He loved it. I thought it was good and fun. But also I would say it’s proof that not every Star Wars character needs their own spin off movie. Han Solo is my favorite character in all of Star Wars this movie really wasn’t needed.

I really think that they should've pushed Solo back a month or two. It was a crowded time of year for big movies, especially with how expensive a trip to the movies is nowadays, and releasing it over the summer where the only thing they'd have to worry about would be like, a romcom or something might've worked better.
Also, in spite of its big advertising budget, it didn't really feel like it was as prominent as much as the other SW movies. Star Wars movies tend to be a commercial tour-de-force and the stuff for Solo felt muted in comparison.

Harrison Ford is Han Solo. Some twenty-something, no-mark with an unpronouncable name isn't. That's the biggest problem the movie faces.

I understand how financially it was a flop but considering all the baggage (Director swap, Concept, competition, and the ultimately finished average product) I'm kind of amazed they got what they did. I know 83M domestically, 65M internationally on an estimated 300M budget wasn't what they wanted, but again..all things considered..
Watching Boba Fett develop is gonna be fun.

As did 'Bino with what they were given. I find it hilarious people are legitimately blaming Alden's last name. "RADIO DJS DIDNT KNOW HOW TO SAY HIS LAST NAME!!!"
