I think more people know him as Don from 3rd Rock from the Sun over here than Newman. Seinfeld wasn't as popular here in the UK and in the typical Seinfeld vs Friends discussions it's Friends that usually wins over here. I've heard that before. I've heard the reasoning in part was because Seinfeld is so super New York with tons and tons of reference to the city and such. Is that true at all? Also, I'd imagine the way Seinfeld talks might get grating depending on what accent of the English language you're most used to. Well it helps that Friends was broadcasted on Channel 4 over here (one of the main terrestrial netowrks) as opposed to Seinfeld that aired on Sky One and Paramount Comedy Chanel that was only available on Cable on and Satellite. Thus Friends was more universally available. And having access to Satellite television as a child I can say that both shows were as new York as each other. It's just that Friends was more readily available. Though the cast being younger and and more vibrant and quirky probably helped as well.

Well not Actors/actresses but I'll never associate Pomp & Circumstance with graduation.

Aiden Gillen will always be Tommy Carcetti, not Littlefinger.

People may look at Laurence Fishburne and think of Morpheus, but he will always be Cowboy Curtis to me.

Kelsey Grammer. I see him more now as Frasier from Frasier rather than Frasier from Cheers.
Really, though, Ed O'Neill is the first person that comes to mind for me, too.

Samuel L Jackson is Nick Fury to me more than Jules Winnfield.

I don't think of America Ferrera as Ugly Betty or Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants lady. I see her and think of her role in Real Women Have Curves.

Everyone was always talking about Barney Stinson, he's still Doogie Howser, MD to me!

William Shatner is best known as Captain Kirk, but Captain Kirk is best known as William Shatner *boggles* Don't forget that William Shatner mask Michael Myers wears when he kills people! I'm not sure what that has to do with anything, but it is the first thing I thought of for some reason.

Yes, Willow for me as well. She is on that nice list of various Buffy crushes along with Jenny Calendar, Cordelia, and Drusilla.

I associate Jimmy Smits as Governor Santos on the West Wing rather then his role on NYPD Blue or Bail Organo in Star Wars. Also I associate Henry Winkler as Barry on Arrested Development then as the Fonz on Happy Days.. but I was never really into Happy Days. So I guess you could count Ron Howard and Scott Baio in their Arrested Development roles too .

Boromir and Ned Stark will probably go down as Sean Bean's most famous roles, but he'll always be Richard Sharpe first and foremost in my mind.

Yeah, Seinfeld is so incredibly New York that most people won't get one of the levels as to why it's so well-written. Friends could have taken place in any other big city.
