Capcom, Sunsoft, LJN/Rare, Data East and Factor 5 usually did decent to great jobs with the licenses of each franchise. I don't even care if each games doesn't follow too closely to the source material, as long as the game is fun and playable.
I heard people for years complain about Batman or even the first TNMT game on NES not being a true representation of the franchise. Does that make the games bad or not worth trying? Absolutely not. Sometimes creative liberty is needed and in the end, the only thing that matters is if the game is fun.
I'll even go so far as to defend almost every franchise with the exceptions of Back to the Future and Predator.

what about games based on movies based on games? The arcade game was pretty solid, since it was basically the SSFII Turbo engine with digitised graphics. The home console version was built from the ground up, and was awful... which made it a game based on a game based on a move based on a game.
