So, I didn't want to hijack someone else's thread with my problems.
Situation - As some may know, my son is on the autism spectrum and has other neuro-developmental issues and is attending public school currently. Unfortunately, we've had nothing but issues out of the school, even with intervention from an advocate/educational specialist at Cincinnati Childrens where he's seen on a regular basis.
#1 - My son is being bullied. He's teased a bit by other kids, but the real problem is with two kids that live up the street from us. Things have gotten physical before, with either of the two brothers punching or kicking my son. They threw eggs at him after Halloween. Most of this is happening either on the bus or at the bus stop before/after school, so the school refuses to get involved, saying they have no authority over what happens even on the bus, let alone before they've gotten on or off. The school refuses to even call it bullying but wants to use other terms, it seems to me to avoid saying they've got any type of this thing happening at the school.
We've spoken with other parents who are having the same problem with the school refusing to acknowledge their kids being bullied, and a lot of it has to do with the same two boys oddly.
We've tried to contact the parents, with absolutely no reply. Instead, I've actually seen the father outside, when he was home for a change, yelling at my son for his younger daughter (kindergarten age) following my son when he went on a walk into the woods behind our house.
I really don't want to call the police on two kids, especially when their home life looks to be less than ideal to be kind, but I'm really out of options when this happens. I will add that I did ONCE get to talk to the father, which was less than productive and, unfortunately, my kids have been cursed with a father that's absolutely terrified of confrontation. Opinions/suggestions?
#2 - Again with the school, they've refused to give my son an IEP, although he's been tested by specialists who agree that he qualifies and have advocated for us, as I stated above. They finally gave an inch and agreed to put him on an unofficial 504 plan, which gives him certain things like extra time to finish tests and whatnot.
What I'm asking about in this instance - my son's class was recently assigned reports, with each student getting a different President to report on. The teacher assigned my son Donald Trump. We voiced our opposition in an email to the teacher, not based on our affiliations but based on the fact that Trump isn't yet President, we'd like for him to be assigned someone who has actually served. His teacher emailed back and told us she'd like him to report on Trump as she was allowing him to work on the report entirely in-school rather than as homework so she could work 1-on-1 with him and she knew the most about him. We cautiously agreed.
He brought his report home yesterday and she failed him. Given the reasons she gave him the assignment, I'm just absolutely stunned that she could fail him. Am I wrong here?
And, if not, what the hell can I do about it?
