I liked the first MK movie, but that CGI was NOT good at all. You cant even use "well, it was the 90s" as an excuse, as stuff like the 90s Pixar films, Beast Wars, even Veggietales have better CGI than that. Though i suppose it could have been worse:

i guess i gotta rewatch Annihilation because i don't remember Baraka being in it at all I liked the first MK movie, but that CGI was NOT good at all. Though i suppose it could have been worse: i think you've got your rose-colored nostalgia glasses on, because the cgi in things like Toy Story and Beast Wars were on the same level as Mortal Kombat the difference is that the others are strictly animated while Mortal Kombat is live action, so the cgi sticks out like a sore thumb

The first one kinda holds up because of just how self-aware it is. It's a schlocky B-movie martial arts cheesefest and doesn't pretend to be anything else.
The sequel takes itself so seriously it's painful, particularly given how cheap and amateurish the whole thing looks. They try to make it this epic globe-spanning story and all it ends up being is dozens of video game cutscenes haphazardly edited together.

I'm surprised he talked about 1 & 2 as if they are of the same quality. You'd think he'd say " if you thought part 1 had problems, wait until you see the half assed sequel!"
Part 1 was at least put together well. The cgi was bad, but the sets, costumes and fight scenes were good. And The story made sense. Because holy crap, do those take a nose dive in Annihilation.

I still love the first movie. While it didn't have the blood and gore the games had, it still stuck to the general feel of the games. The second, the less said about it the better. Funny though how that song has, to my knowledge, never appeared in any of the games. By far the best thing about the movies.

They shouldn't have killed off Johnny Cage in Annihilation. His douchieness would have given it much comic relief.

I shall not hear an ill-spoken word about MK1. It was a cheesy kung fu movie based on a video game that's based on cheesy kung fu movies; in that way, it served its purpose with aplomb. Still think it ranks as one of the top video game film adaptations of all time just for sticking with that general spirit of things, even if it lacked gore and whatnot.
Annihilation is mind-bending garbage, though. I went to see that during a birthday party for a classmate when we were all in sixth grade, we were all pumped because we had liked the original; even at age 12, we all left feeling like we had just had our ticket money stolen.

Yeah, the base idea was originally a Jean Claude Van Damme game... (hell one of the main characters is still a blatant Jean Claude expy.) so it being a cheesy kung fu movie is really the only way that makes sense.

Yeah. MK1 is a perfectly solid movie. It is cheesy, which it should be. The series has a guy who appears on the screen and yells "TOASTY!" The fight scenes are very well choreographed. The special effects don't hold up well, but all the sets look good. They did about as well as could be expected with the franchise, especially with not going for an R rating.
