Amy Grant did a version with her latest Christmas album...with husband Vince Gill.
If Amy sings it, it's not terrible.

It's pretty funny how stuff evolves, given that in the 40s, as the article says, the song could be interpreted as empowering for women, but with changing social moors, sayings and word usage, and various other things, its lyrics take on an entirely different meaning in the modern era. Somebody could probably write a pretty in-depth book about that happening in pop culture, and not just in a "LOL they called the 1890s the 'Gay Nineties', isn't that weird today?" way. Yeah, it's a song 100% steeped in 1940's culture. Were a woman being in the same room with a man alone was scandalous. the entire point of the song is that she doesn't want to leave but is worried that she'd get labelled a whore if she stays. but since that's not as much of a thing anymore... it does take on a rather... uh... sinister sound to it It is pretty fascinating in that way. In the 40's, the song is sexually liberating for the woman. Practically feminist. Now it sounds kinda rapey on the part of the guy.

The ones that say it's about date rape are saying more to reflect negatively against themselves than the actual song they're criticizing.
(People who are only joking about it notwithstanding.)

For a lot of people of an older generation the only thing that constatuted rape was some weirdo in the ally in a trenchcoat forcing strangers against their will. A woman going on a date with a man and then going back to his room for drinks and not having sex with a man and then getting raped to them was not considered rape since she went up to his room where his "animal instincts" kicked in. Really any woman going into private with another man was taken as whatever happens she should have excpected it. Basically a lot of old movies from the 40's and 50's rape is simmering undernearth the subtext.

Having heard the Idina "Adele Dazeem" Mendel and Michael "c***" Buble version of this where they replace that line with "was that a wink?", I'd rather hear the rapey version.

Basically a lot of old movies from the 40's and 50's rape is simmering undernearth the subtext. The trope where the male protagonist slaps a forceful kiss on some protesting dame and she turns to jelly in his arms is a staple of films from those decades.

That's a bit harsh, I think; again, if you go into the song with no context in terms of when it was written and what some of the phrases mean in the older pop vernacular, it can easily come off as pretty uncomfortable. That said, I would hope that somebody with those worries would seek out an explanation about the song's origins before jumping to conclusions, as well.

I read about this yesterday and I played it at work. Myself and my fellow co-workers were absolutely cringing at how hideously awful the lyrics were and to be honest, I made it to "I'm glad you had a real good time," before I threw in the towel. So in reading this thread, I decided to dive in head first and listen to the whole song and it's SO MUCH WORSE than I could have possibly imagined.
That said, someone earlier in this thread made a good point, that maybe the song is about a woman who is really trying to drop hints on the guy to make a move but the guy is just so aloof or nervous that he doesn't know how to respond, so he comes up with impossibly stupid answers like "You're a real nice girl." If that's the case and that's the actual intention of the song, it's actually pretty smart and kind of turns the concept of the original "Baby It's Cold Outside" on its ear. But if it's not, and it's all about the guy just being a "good friend" or a "nice guy," then it's the lamest, corniest f***ing song ever.

You want to know an uncomfortable version? The one with JAMES TAYLOR. I keep thinking of "Mr. Jefferson" from South Park when I hear him, especially his end-of-song protests.

Let's look at to song in its original context. A 40's musical film.

I dunno, I happen to like Buble, but what do I know? Totally fine to like whoever you want. Shit, I kinda liked the Napoleon Dynamite cartoon, but I get where a lot of people loathed it.

Where I work they regularly play a version where it's just someone whistling the tune. If the song is about rape then I suppose that is more creepy in a way.
