For anyone who has a tablet, whether it's Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, etc., do you ever use it in portrait? I try to sometimes with mine, but mine is top-heavy if I hold it that way so I always worry I'm going to smack myself in the head with it.

You could hold it slightly further away from your face.
I use mine in portrait to watch YouTube. It's fine.

Mine stays in portrait mode all the time unless I'm watching something or playing a game that requires me to be in landscape mode.

when It's not in the dock and I'm not using an app designed for landscape, yes.

The only tablet I have is the iPad mini, and it is very comfortable to use in portrait mode.

I find it easier to type in portrait, and some sites like eBay are easier to navigate that way.
