I'm pretty sure it's over him referring to Fisher as a "creature". I get that he didn't mean anything wrong by it, but it's a bad and kinda weird choice of words during a time when many of her fans are in mourning. I don't think people are "going out of their way" to be angry. That is a really clumsy tweet. I wouldn't have left it up either. The use of the word creature to describe an attractive person of any gender goes back centuries, and sure, it's become corny and perhaps a little clumsy, but he clearly wasn't objectifying her in any way. Key word is "centuries". I think it's an incredibly dated term. I do realize he meant no harm, but I can understand why people were taken aback by it.

Its use has only really dropped out of the mainstream lexicon in the last couple of decades, and Steve Martin's a 71 year-old man and has likely used it for all his life. I too can understand why people might be taken aback by it, but context is king, and an old man using a quaint, somewhat unfashionable term as part of a glowing tribute doesn't justify the ire raised IMO.

On the contrary, it is actually an incredibly "modern" term than it would seem like when you really think about it, simply because 'creature' would be widespread enough to assume anything": Man or woman, human or animal. On that regard, it's actually a much more progressive term than it would seem to assume "yes, it's possible for any of those things to be beautiful to him, and she in particular was one of the most beautiful to him."

I watched the ending to Force Awakens just today and I nearly wept when Rey hugged Leia after Han's death.

Apparently a man can no longer make a comment about there being much more to a woman than just her appearance? Or at least he must do so without mentioning her appearance? I'm usually the first in line to take a stand against the "PC ruins everything" brigade, but in this case people really have gone out of their way to find something offensive. It's in written in a sentimental, light-hearted tone from a...comedian, which Steve Martin is in case people forgot, and is like the least offensive thing I can imagine. It's just wild. I get people are upset that she passed but it's plain silly. I know, I know, I don't get to tell people how they should feel or react to things but I think I reserve the right to say it's hella goofy. It's a little beyond the pale to me to get outraged over that, even as someone who is normally a pretty supportive person. This is the kind of stuff that fuels the "PC Police" hate train, as if they needed any more of that.

He made a statement honoring Carrie Fisher, no more no less.

I saw what he said too and I 100 percent agree with you that what he tweeted was harmless.

Nothing at all wrong with Steve's tweet. If anything, the two sentences show that he realized there was much more to her than he initially thought on the surface. People thinking that's bad is kinda odd, word choice or not

People thinking that's bad is kinda odd, word choice or not I've seen a few people, even celebrities, basically tweet the same thing. "First I thought she was gorgeous, then I found out how smart, witty and generally awesome she was". It's a pretty common sentiment, no idea why his is the one people jumped on.

I feel like it's very selective over who gets 'that treatment' and I can't figure out why or how it's chosen or centered to just a select one or few. Like, Cinnabon sent out a tweet that was disrespectful to Fisher and a lot of people jumped on it, even the TV news outlets, but Just For Men sends out a tweet that was disrespectful overall to the large amount of deaths this year, and it was used to promote a college bowl game, and hardly anyone is mentioning it. I guess it was because Just For Men didn't mention Carrie Fisher's 'buns'.

The people complaining about Steve Martin's tweet knew he wasn't being disrespectful. They just wanted something to be offended about.
