As long as the theme stays, we're good.

Didn't ADR claim that Almas hated being in NXT? After being forced to do something completely different, I could see it.

I haven't been keeping up with NXT recently, but I thought I read he was starting to find his footing as a heel?

Since his heel turn he has become infinitely better all round. I don't know why they tried his lame hat and suspenders dude gimmick first off as a face...

I couldn't disagree more. He's been an absolute gem since turning heel.

Wanted to like him as a face but there just wasn't anything to get on board with.

The root of Meltzer's issue with Almas is that he is mad that he was working WWE unmasked. His mindset is that Sombra could be the next Rey Mysterio or Mil Mascaras because of the mask and high flying moves. It is the same mindset of promoters who thought they could create the next Hulk Hogan with any jacked blonde dude. But even if he was masked, his initial presentation and the fact his best work was rarely seen among the nichest of a niche demographic was doomed and an uphill battle. Look at the runs of Sin Cara Uno y Dos and Kalisto is you want to see how well that would had worked out. Heel Andrade has more confidence and swagger. He also done IMO his best character and in ring work as a heel in CMLL. Plus dude is learning English and how to work the WWE style. And he is still under 30 so there is enough time for him to develop. After all, NXT is meant to develop talent.

And they can put a mask on him anytime.

I only knew of him, as I often read about him here and elsewhere. I was excited when he signed, as even though I'm not a huge follower of lucha in general, I love WWE style being injected with new flavors. So I was really hoping to see him succeed.
I think he definitely floundered as a face a bit, due to a mix of NXT creative not really having any solid direction for him, and him adjusting to the styles and NXT environment.
The heel turn has really made a difference though. He carries himself way more confidently in the ring, and just exudes a charisma as a heel that was nowhere to be found as a face. He's slowly starting to get more and more reaction as a heel, which will eventually lead to him getting a babyface push because people will acknowledge that he's too talented to boo.
I think once his English comes around a little more (professionally speaking, not a personal view) I think that he could slide into an Eddie Guerrero style tweener role where he is over for being a smartass face who just marches to the beat of his own drum

They didn't want the next Rey Mysterio, they wanted the next Flash Funk. They would have given him a lot more things if that were the case... A louder outfit, some backup dancers, a dance routine, the works. Almas was just another one of these guys who came in off of his pre-NXT cred and literally nothing else.

He actually said he was homesick, which is perfectly natural. But being homesick didn't mean he hated his job.

Either his Suspenders got sick of him or he turned heel on them too.

I think it's interesting that the last several high profile luchadors they've signed haven't fared as well as they wanted to. Compared to how much of a huge success Rey Mysterio was it's interesting they haven't really been able to recreate that.
It's still early for Almas though, time will tell.

I think a lot of that is because WWE didn't have to much creating with Mysterio, he was a popular act with years of major US television exposure before he stepped foot in a WWE ring. WWE's pretty much starting from scratch with these "next Mysterios".

Compared to how much of a huge success Rey Mysterio was it's interesting they haven't really been able to recreate that. It'd probably help if they both had any idea what they were doing with the demographic they're aiming at and if they'd pick up anyone who's actually good enough to warrant it. Alberto could've potentially been it on some level but for some reason they mostly have used him as a heel and when they did try him as a face it went well at first until they did the, "Born in Mexico, made in America," thing that's basically the single biggest cast of misreading that audience they possibly could have done, Sin Cara 1 was an utter mess who didn't seem to want to work to improve any (something to be said for WWE fast-tracking him, sure, but he was there for years and had time to learn and just plain didn't), Hunico is not a good high-flyer or a particularly good face and is trouble behind the scenes, and Kalisto has flashes of brilliance but isn't very attention-getting as a personality and a lot of the time is an awkward mess.

I'm surprised that the WWE hasn't just said 'screw it' and hired one of the assorted El Hijo de Rey Misterios roaming around, Rey's cousin even got knockoff tats.
