I can confirm that after 30-40 hours, XIII does not get better. IN fact, it gets worse.

Hope ruined that game. Worst final fantasy character.

Hope ruined that game. Worst final fantasy character. I really wish I had the option for Lightning to leave him behind. I've seen some people justify Hope by saying "he's just a kid. Most kids would be like that". Maybe so but it doesn't change the fact he's a terrible and annoying character. Nobody likes whining people in real life so it baffles me why video game and television producers often decide when they bring in a kid or teenage character to make them a whiny, annoying little shit. The Walking Dead showed how to put a kid in an adult setting with Clementine who was awesome and The Last of Us showed how to use a teenage character alongside adults with Ellie.

Honestly, I think XIII might get looked back on more fondly after people have played XV, sort of like with what's happening with XII. Does that mean you think XV is bad?

13 may as well have been Progress Quest.
You fight as many enemies as the game tells you, so you're the exact level the game wants you at any given point
There's only minimal branching in how you level your stats, and iin the end it may as well still be linear
The entire game is a hallway
I don't see how that got 2 sequels while everyone was waiting 7 years for Versus XIII. Square Enix should have been ashamed that they put that game out.

When I was at GameStop last night, I saw a copy of XIII for $7.
I personally think its still too pricey.
People gripe about Mystic Quest but that was made specifically for younger gamers. This game somehow assumed that just because there's this big world, that doesn't mean you could explore it.
And I still think Lightning supplanted Cloud as their goto character.

After 12 it was a big step up for me, what I love the most about final fantasy is characters and 13, as much as they are terrible human beings, is full of interesting people facing the fact that they've been branded without any choice to destroy the world(which is why there is no city, you can't be roamng around in a city while wearing the mark of satan, showing you have been chosen to destroy the world, just saying). And 13-2's the best doctor who game ever. I have not played lightning returns yet because I've been told there's a timer and timers are made of pure evil

FF13 killed the series for my entire group of friends that grew up playing FF on the NES
Final Fantasy used to be "I have it on preorder and I'll take off work to play it Day 1". Now it's "maybe I'll grab it when it goes on discount". And that maybe has morphed into "I'll think about grabbing it from the discount bin but I end up never doing it"

FFXIV A Realm Reborn saved the series for me. It may be an MMO, but it felt like the most "authentic" Final Fantasy experience since at least X, if not the Playstation trilogy.

I do think XIII is flawed- I'm not a fan of the lack of exploration either, and the villain was lame- but I do love how visually impressive many of the designs and technology are in it.
I will never agree with the Hope backlash. To the one poster that mentioned how kid characters are written- unfortunately, there's an inbuilt bias against underrated characters in not just games, but all sorts of media, and he suffers from that. Given what he went through, how can you not sympathize with him?
As for Ellie, I've come across people who thought even SHE was annoying, and usually not for a good reason- they just don't want to see a wimpy little kid in their manly game. Even really well-written child characters go through that crap.

He really came into his own in 13-2 but I felt he had good logical progression in 13 from seeking revenge on Snow to eventually coming to terms on what happen and becoming a companion to lightning.

Based upon certain missions you can increase the time you have before the world ends.

Some of the missions were annoying like the one where you have drink these strange potions during battle and report back to the maker.

Yea that was only really to do certain missions tho, freezing time I mean. I can't remember the mission but I remember something I got really annoyed with because I couldn't find it. The landscape around where Sazh was, was pretty annoying too

the really annoying bit about Hope is he never tells Snow (the REAL worst character in the game) to go get stuffed for getting his mom killed.

I heard from other people as well after 20/30 it gets good. Jesus. Wouldn't you be better just playing a good game for 20hours? I give Suikoden 5 shit for taking like 5 hours to get to things kicking into gear, even then it's all setting up the world and why things are teetering on the edge. I could literally restart Suikoden 5 almost 4 or 5 times when things start getting good and it'd still be less time than it takes for FF13 to get good.

FF13 only gets slightly less shitty, which is still profoundly shitty.

Suikoden V gets off to a slow start, but at least the world-building is interesting.
Honestly, it was hard for me to really give much of a damn about the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology and cosmos. It was bad in the FF13 games and in Type 0. A lot of it was just really contrived and convoluted for the sake of being convoluted. And the fal'cie being assholes because they can. Or because their maker is an asshole, too.
At least FF15 divorced itself from that nonsense, almost certainly for the better.
