Where is that illegal? Certainly not in the US. No clue if it is illegal in the States, but I do know that unless you say otherwise they have to give you at least 8 hours off between shifts. Had one job try to get me to work until 2am,working a 12 hour shift. Get off go home and be back at 5am for a shift. Casually mentioned how I know about the law about having 8 hours off between shifts and they quickly changed their minds. I wish I could do that. I'd get fired if I questioned any of that. When I work a 16 hour shift I usually get only 4 hours of sleep

there's a huge difference between signing up for OT by choice and being forced into it (which, as I've stated is illegal in most places) by your whiny boss because they can't bother to staff their company properly. Where is that illegal? Certainly not in the US. it's illegal here. unless you're in management or a VERY specific few types of jobs that are exempt you can't force someone to work longer than their scheduled shift without their written consent AND advance notice. we also don't have "at will" firing here so your boss can't reprise on you for any reason for refusing.
