Whenever I hear about someone getting injured or killed by illegal fireworks this time of year, I instantly just think "don't use illegal fireworks then" and have no real sympathy for them. That feeling is of course not reserved for innocent bystanders but I have zero sympy for people who should know better and end up getting hurt or killed.

It depends on what you mean about sympathy.
Like, if you think it's just desserts, that's kinda f***ed up. The penalty for illegal fireworks should not be maiming or death.
If you think it's preventable and should not have happened to begin with, that's different.

Nope. If you're gonna do it for 10 minutes during New Years, that's cool..but if that shit continues a week after New Years/4th of July, you're an asshole.

If you wished harm on everyone who uses illegal fireworks, that'd be one thing. But I think it's natural for many to think "Well, shouldn't have rolled the dice" for something like that when the circumstances are simply "knew the risk, didn't have to, nothing bad would've happened if they didn't, but they did".

If you know something could seriously injure or kill you and you decide to do it anyway, it's your own fault.
That being said, they don't "deserve it" or anything like that.

Our brain prevent us from feeling sad for every death because we will go insane otherwise. So it makes sense we shrug off certain deaths as them being stupid so we don't feel bad that another person died.

Can someone clue me into what makes a firework illegal? Is there a size limit or something?

That feeling is of course not reserved for innocent bystanders but I have zero sympy for people who should know better and end up getting hurt or killed. I loved fireworks as a kid, the illegal ones were the best kind. I was however smart enough not to hold anything very powerful in your hand while lighting it. I escaped with minor burns, and was lucky there wasn't any collateral damage.

What if they were using them legally? Would you be upset then? You can be sympathetic to someone's suffering, even if it was their own fault.

Doesn't make you terrible, but doesn't say a lot for your empathy; particularly cuz for the most part the legality or not is based more on local laws and are kind of arbitrary.
Now if it's someone using em improperly, I can see going: "Well, yeah they should've been safer." Even then though, I think there could be empathy.

I think it just darwinism, because if you aren't a complete idiot and actually sober, they can be a lot of fun and relatively safe. Also, here in Indiana, they are all legal.
