The tin foil hat brigade are going to have a field day with this: Monster Energy car winning the first race with Monster as the series sponsor? In all seriousness though, well done Kurt. I WANT TO BELIEVE

Well, I don't come around too much anymore, but I wanted to see what you all thought about things today...
My thoughts:
Prior to the last segment, it was a parade. Like, the kind I expect at street races with no passing zones in open wheel (and I'm an IndyCar fan first and foremost, but unapologetic about the flaws they themselves have). I would wager that 75% or better of position changes during the first two stints were based upon pit strategy (whether forced or planned), and attrition due to the wrecks. I saw very little of the "intensity" promised until the last 40 or so laps.
I'm trying to keep an open mind. First race with a new aero package and new format, and the biggest event of the series to boot. But damn...it was ho-hum for too long. Part of that will happen in any number of races, but it almost seems like NASCAR has gone the opposite direction of what they promised.
I'll be interested to see what happens at non-plate tracks, and definitely at the bullrings. The hell of it is that if it doesn't work, NASCAR will beat it into the ground despite demonstrable evidence that the racing isn't better, like they've done with so many other rules/format changes.
Wildly, the following formula seemed to work for a LONG time:
1) Establish a race distance and rules package. 2) Allow competitors to build cars within the specified rules and enter the race. 3) Race the specified distance. 4) Reward the competitors based upon who finished the specified distance within the rules based upon finishing position.
It's a wild concept to think a guy who went 500 miles faster than other drivers with a compliant car should win, but then, the idea of "purity of competition" seems lost on the NASCAR powers that be.
As for the car repair rule...well, Martinsville should be lucky to have ten cars finish. That rule needs tweaked BADLY. X amount of minutes in the garage and maintain minimum speed, mebbe? Also, minimum speed is based upon the track? Do they realize that 160 is a good 35 MPH slower than race pace? Would it kill NASCAR to have a 110 percent rule or something similar?
I'll try and check in more often. I miss participating in this thread.

Late on the Daytona talk...bummed as hell that Junior wrecked, but that's racin'. Wrong place, wrong time. Agree with The Booty Disciple that most of the race was boring parade stuff. But damn, that finish was great. Nice to see Kurt win, though I was pulling for Chase, or Blaney to pass Kurt before his run fizzled.

www.racer.com/indycar/item/138439-indycar-miles-looking-at-single-tv-partnerHard to believe that the series signed the Versus deal so long ago. Whether it helped or hurt is up for debate, but I'll say this...the NBCSN crew are getting tight enough to rival the Uncle Bobby/Paul Page/Sam Posey years in terms of enthusiasm and sheer entertainment. Add in the wealth of technical information we get from today's broadcasts, and you have the opportunity to become a very educated, very informed race fan watching them. I hope to hell that if they land elsewhere, the majority of that broadcast crew can be kept. Please, for the love of all that is holy, dump Eddie Cheever as soon as possible. Snot Goodyear is just boring and dumb and doesn't have his facts straight sometimes, but Cheever seems to be in the booth at Indy to talk about himself and little else.

Harvick wins the 1st 2 segments, but a speeding penalty denies him the victory. Instead, Brad Keselowski takes the checkers.

NASCAR is moving the New Hampshire Fall race to Las Vegas in 2018. And we might see a road course Monster Cup playoff race in Charlotte in 2018. Indycar has a Indy road course race called the Indy GP before they go to the Indy Oval for the Indy 500 so we might see the reverse with the Coke 600 on the oval at Charlotte on the Sunday before Memorial Day in 2018 before going to the infield road course for the fall race

That's a good call on NASCAR if true. A road race should be part of the playoffs if you run 2 of them a season. Especially if you put a crap shoot restrictor plate race in it.

It's pretty bad that I saw Kyle after the brawl and momentarily stopped to wonder if he bladed.

I will also say, I didn't realize how badly Kyle Busch is balding until today. Good Lord, that Vegas sun did him no favors.
