One of the common comments about today's WWE product is that it's too safe and kiddie-friendly. There was an interview, can't remember who with, who said there SHOULD be an adult wrestling show with cuss words etc.
And watching Raw, you could agree. Neville attacked and annihilated Rich Swann, who then goes to call him a "sourpuss." That's idiotic, unrealistic and kills the hype from the crowd.
But over on Smackdown, one of THE biggest shock reactions from the audience was the Miz saying the relatively tame "you're sleeping with him" comment to Renee.
Difference being he said it SO sleazily, and Renee acted insulted and embarrassed enough that the crowd totally bought into it and couldn't wait for her boyfriend to come kick this piece of shit's ass.
You had that amazing confrontation between AJ and Cena, mixing in a little bit of smark truth in with a genuinely impassioned promo and now I can't wait to see it. Ziggler's heel turn, head butting smiling jump man didn't need much in the way of insults, it just worked.
Good storylines delivered well. That's all wrestling needs. Thank you and goodnight.

You can have Attitude without going full.....well, attitude.
Look at Roberts/Savage. Gritty, dark and dramatic without the need of going over the top.

What "smark truth"? Other than that, I agree. I agree with what Kevin Hamilton said in one thread. If major sports like the NFL don't need raunch to be compelling, then you can write compelling wrestling stories without too much raunch. I like Lucha Underground for what it is, and it's pretty adult. And you can have more family friendly stuff like World of Sport. Or you can balance it. But yeah, I don't think Attitude style writing is an "absolute must". |

Noam Dar is making sexual harassment funny and Drew Gulak/Tony Nesse hates women. That's pretty much an Attitude Era storyline. Especially if Alicia Fox turns on Cedrick.

It's all down to the false belief that "mature" writing is inherently crude, oversexualized, and raunchy, even when it's the exact opposite of maturity. I don't know if "sourpuss" was done as some kind of thing only meant for kids, but it's taking the gravity away from the situation in the process. You can have something that holds a PG rating, but handles the storylines with a maurity and depth that makes them intriguing instead of really only being something that appeals to kids, if that. Something that is at least usually family-appropriate entertainment while still keeping its head on its shoulders. And I think Smackdown is doing that very well right now. There's a middle ground between "suffering succotash" and the myriad of regrettable, embarrassing-in-hindsight things tat made up a lot of the Attitude Era and I think it makes for a genuinely better wrestling product for WWE. Which I say as someone who finds enjoyment in the extreme ends of the spectrum in Lucha Underground and Chikara.

You don't need to be the Attitude Era, no, though Raw would heavily benefit from taking some ideas from it. Not saying in the raunchiness, but the Attitude Era shows were way breezier and did way more in treating the whole roster like they mattered and that if you missed a show you'd genuinely miss something. SmackDown's captured some of that somewhat, but it hasn't fully taken.

SmackDown's captured some of that somewhat, but it hasn't fully taken. Raw's hook was supposedly that it's unpredictable and anything can happen. It needs that kind of magic again. |

I think when people say bring back the Attitude era they really want storylines and characters for everybody on the roster and for everyone to be over. That's what I want again. Smackdown and Lucha Underground proves that the best of the Attitude era still works today.

People just instantly think being more like The Attitude Era means going back to the most extreme moments of that era. One can take what worked about that era without having to relive Vinnie Ru/Vinnie Mac's messed up sexual fantasies. No corpse screwing (Yes, I know this happened in the Ruthless Aggression Era, but it's usually used as an example against TAE, so...), no Mark Henry getting blown by a transvestite, no "Choppy, Choppy Your Pee Pee!!!" Just go with a more harder edged version of what is already happening, and we're good. |
