Post by EoE: Well There's Your Problem on Jan 18, 2017 2:35:15 GMT -5
I bring this up because of the growing criticism about Bayley's promo ability, but Charlotte and Sasha have also come under criticism for their promos over the last couple of years, so they're relevant to the discussion.
Is it bad material being written for them? Is it bad character direction? Are they simply not just good enough on the mic? Importantly, was this ever a problem for them in NXT? Because I've noticed that it only seems to have become an issue on the main roster, as they get put into the promo-heavy main roster TV format and the aforementioned questionable writing. Were the fanbase too focused on the strong in-ring work and the good stories behind them that they didn't really notice that they weren't that great on the mic? Did they not get ENOUGH mic time in NXT to be accurately judged? Or are they actually good and we're getting in a tizzy over nothing?
I worry mostly for Bayley, because sometimes all it can take is one dodgy promo and you can lose the support of a lot of this fanbase at the drop of a hat. Just ask TJ Perkins. Hopefully she hasn't already had that with this one from RAW.

None of them do anything for me on the mic. Charlotte is boring but probably the best of the bunch, Sasha I find really bad and Bayley can be passable but she can also be dreadful.
Becky and Alexa are the best women on the mic imo.

I think Sasha and Bayley both are kind of bland on the mic. Charlotte is actually good on the mic, but her constant yelling when she doesn't need to really is unnecessary.

Charlotte is the best out the bunch. Sasha is not a good promo as a babyface and Bayley is on thin ice with her material as if it gets too cute that crowd will tune you out.
However, they are all still young in there careers and have the ability to improve. Becky and Alexa as already stated are probably the two best in regards to promos on the women side.

If they would let them say stuff that isn't scripted as much, more personality might come out for all 3. I didn't mind any of em in NXT, and although she is may favorite female wrestler, Bayley is the weakest.
Just give em better material, or let them do their own and they will be better off.

Charlotte is by far the worst of the bunch I find Bayley endearing in the Microphone. Sasha as a face is avarage.

Bayley does not have a good promo voice or delivery. Neither does Sasha.
Charlotte goes up and down, some weeks she is better then she goes back to YELLING and it sucks.

I cant think of anyone on the Raw Roster that is better on the mic then Charlotte. Sasha sounds believable atleast when she gets angry.
Hearing Bayley talk on the main roster is incredbly cringy to me. Nothing she says sounds believable, the delivery is like giving a shy 4year old the mic.

Sasha's verbal timing is better suited as a heel.
Bayley's character is being taken too literally by the writing staff. It wouldn't surprise me if Vince was writing for her too with how out of touch it really is.
Charlotte is an amazing promo, but with the hate she gets, it's an agree to disagree. I think she talks the way she does on purpose. She's supposed to be a loud, obnoxious heel. She wants to be the loudest person in the room to match her ego. You hate the way she talks? You're supposed to. She's doing her job that good. Sorta like Vicki Guerrero without jumping the shark on the character.
Nia Jax is by far the worst of the Raw women though. Her voice is horrible, and her delivery is even worse. Sasha and Bayley can be a decent promo if allowed to interject their personality into it. Problem with Raw is no one gets subtlety or playing to someone's strengths. So they're hindered. Charlotte makes it work because it's easier (I presume) to write for an arrogant female character than it is a for some reason good guy cocky Sasha, or a let's take her little girl gimmick literally Bayley.
I blame the writing. Move any of those women to SDL and they'd be better. I guaran-damn-tee it.

Charlotte is infinitely better than the other two. I thought the "Bayley is one of you!" material was way too forced on Raw but she's still better. Sasha sounds like she can barely string a sentence together and Bayley sounds like a nervous child.

I choose not to watch the promos including these 3. It's as if Vince loves to expose their weaknesses
their stories/angles/rivalries are superbland and generic (La Luchadora >>>), that's just not the driving force
Their distinctive characters and ring skills are the things that make me wanna watch their stuff, definitely not their promos/interviews. NXT did it alot better once again (see Becky/Sasha contract signing before TO Unstoppable or the vignette before Sasha/Bayley in Brooklyn)

Charlotte is pretty good at promos. Sasha is okay but needs to ditch her weird off and on "Valley Girl-ish" accent which I don't remember from when she was in NXT.
I don't usually think Bayley is that bad, her mic style fits her character.
And her promo started off pretty good on Raw, but it fell off a cliff with those lame poems.

I'm going to tell you all what you already know is true. The legacy of the worst promos on RAW runs through MAY-UH.

Sasha and Bayley are bland but serviceable. Charlotte is abysmal. The material they're given does none of them any favors but the former two are at least able to sound like human beings and maintain a consistent tone throughout their promos, as opposed TO RANDOMLY yelling WORDS.

I think we're getting in a tizzy over nothing. Banks is better suited as a heel, I'll admit that, but what Bayley does fits her character perfectly. And frankly, I enjoy Charlotte Flair simply for the fact she's not trying to be a clone of her dad on the mic. There's nothing cool about her, she's just an evil jerk. I find that refreshing.
Yes, heels should be entertaining. But Charlotte finds a nice balance between being entertaining and making you want to see her get beaten.
Nia Jax is pretty bad so far, though.

Build the women's division around the 4 Horsewomen they said. Everyone will love it they said. Charlotte is a pretty good heel promo when she talks like a human. Sasha is miscast as a face and don't believe in her character so her promos are one note. Bayley is too cute for her own good. To quote Stewie Griffin "It's like she is 5".

Smackdown writers play more to strengths. And I see more of a "less is more" approach with them more often than not. Every Smackdown promo last night that I saw would've been at least twice as long on RAW.
All three would be in better hands on Smackdown. They still might be weak on the mic overall, but they wouldn't be so exposed and thrown to the dogs like the RAW team has done.
I think Charlotte's fine where she's at for the most part. People who hate listening to her, I chalk up to "good, she's being a heel." And out of the three mentioned, she is the one I like the least.

I don't remember them being this bad in NXT at all. None of them were the second coming of Piper If I remember correctly, there was something about the way they were taught to do promos down there being very much the freer "make it work for yourself" kind of style, since they only had Ryan Ward and Dusty to work on the creative end of things. So, all three of them were brought up in a system where they could get over and establish themselves with their own material, which always seemed fine, only to be brought up to the main roster where there's so many writers on staff that they need to have them writing everybody's promos. So much of the material they're given is bad, not only for the performers but just in general poorly conceived and stilted. Nobody is able to put themselves into their promos because it's all in the same bland voice of a bunch of low rung TV writers who need something to do, so they're put to the task of writing dialogue that doesn't fit the characters and makes them look worse off as performers because of how much worse it comes out.
This isn't community theater, but you wouldn't know it from Nia Jax's promo on Raw on this week. And even if it's been a while since she was on NXT I don't remember her having any promo quite as bad as this week's.

I know it's a familiar drum to beat, but Raw's format and how long their segments drag can make good talkers sound worse than they actually are. I absolutely love Bliss on the mic, but if you take her off Smackdown and send her out there to drone on about whatever before she gets to the point, fans would get tired of her as well. I guarantee that if Flair were on the blue show, she'd come off way better. But she CAN talk.

I find it funny that Becky probably had the most low key career in NXT out of the Four Horsewomen, but she's easily the best performer on WWE TV out of all of them. She has had more experience, though.
