What's a good word for someone who is always willing to help

I'm looking for a word or saying for someone who always volunteers when someone needs help and makes a point of always actively supporting and helping others (as opposed to saying "someone should do something"). Someone who takes charge when they find a cause worth fighting for.

I guess that works but to me, it feels like it focuses more on the goodness aspect whereas I'm looking for something that would focus more on the... willingness, I suppose?

Plus, I'm looking more for an adjective, something to qualify someone like that. I guess something along the lines of "generous" but more in the sense that they want to help others rather than give them stuff. Someone who is helpful and supportive (without necessarily being entirely selfless).

BTW, thanks for the suggestions so far, guys. "Philanthropist" and "proactive" are getting close, I feel (and "proactive" would be part of what defines them).

Again, I feel it's close but not quite what I'm looking for.

I guess the idea is that the person is more dedicated to principles than to individuals. Something along the lines of "committed" or "engaged", I think but rather then having one set goal, they like to help others in their struggles.
