I give the movie all the credit in the world for taking what we know about the Great Wall, something so ordinary and accepted, and turning it on its head.

I prefer the 2019 classic Taj Mahal about the appeasement of an alien race of biobots who used the manmade structure as a conference room and experimental facility for growing earth vegetables, but humanity gets word and assumes the worst by thinking human experiments are being conducted instead. Mayhem ensues.

Was just coming in to type that very thing. Iron Man 3 and Transformers 4 are the first movies that come to mind when I think of movies made to appeal to China.

Yimou Zhang's directed some good films, but this one looks...well, it LOOKS great but I doubt the story matches the visuals.
I also like how the tag line "What were they trying to keep out?" is set up like a typical ominous tag, despite the fact that "Various tribal invasions" is the obvious answer.

And they had the red carpet wide release premiere in China and had more Chinese product placement than American product placement. It did work very well to there favour so kudos to them. But you can add in 21 & Over in the list and Looper. You know the part where they tell him to leave America and settle to China where the future is, that wasn't in the original script and only added in when they got China to invest in the movie.

Ah, that I didn't know about Looper. There was also the first Homefront game, that changes the antagonist from China to North Korea. Albeit that was less about appealing and more about appeasing.

I have a strong feeling this movie is going to be a box office bomb.

And they did the same thing with the Red Dawn remake.

Ben: Hey look, I'm sorry I dragged you away from whatever-gay-serial-killers-who-ride-horses-and-like-to-play-golf-touchy-feely-picture you're supposed to be doing this week. Matt: I take it you haven't seen Forces of Nature? Ben: You're like a child. What've I been telling you? You gotta do the safe picture. Then you can do the art picture. But then sometimes you gotta do the payback picture because your friend says you owe him.

To bungle part of what Richard Nixon said in his visit to China, "this is NOT a Great Wall, built by NOT great people".
God, if this year's Gods of Egypt doesn't have "chitty wall" jokes in the RiffTrax, I'll be so mad.

They cut out the aliens blowing up the Great Wall in all versions to make the government happy.

While on the flip side of the coin, Independence Day: Resurgence was made with Chinese money but after the deal was done killed off every Chinese character except Angelababy and destroyed Beijing. Swerve!
