Note: There's gonna be spoilers here.
Okay. So, I finally finished MGS V, and holy shit do I need to post some thoughts on this game.
Gameplay-wise, it was great. The open world aspect was good (with some downsides), and it's probably up there with the best stealth gameplay that I've ever played at least. There's some things I didn't like, and these are probably very common complaints as I knew some criticisms going in, but I hated how long it took to do things. Whether you're calling for air support, pickup, supplies, trying to escape the hot zone, it all took long enough to be kind of annoying at times. Also, I did mention how good the stealth gameplay is, but it's kind of more fun to just kill everyone and move on, especially when the checkpoints put you way the hell back.
As far as the story, well... Yeah. It wasn't very good. I knew this going in, but you can definitely tell there was a lot of stuff cut as almost nothing gets closure aside from Skull Face's death (which I also didn't like) and the Venom Snake/Big Boss thing. Quiet kind of just left with no explanation as to why she didn't release the parasites or why she wanted to help on missions. Man on Fire could've been a great boss to finally kill him or something, but nope. I don't know, there's plenty of things I could list here, but it was so disjointed that even with my low expectations due to Konami going crazy, it was still disappointing. Snake never talking was kind of funny, though. Paying all this money for a famous actor and they rarely use him.
Overall, it's probably something I'll never play again as I know nothing future is going to be released that explains any of this shit, but the gameplay was good. So... thoughts?

How long is this game? I've had it since Christmas last year and I've yet to play it. Now that I'm deep into Final Fantasy XV and Resident Evil 7, I likely will never play it if it's some 30-40 hour epic.

It took me about a week to complete the main story. There's a crazy amount of extra stuff you can do if you want to 100% the game, but I don't think there's a necessity to do so.

Depending on your playstyle you're looking at about 40 to 60 hours if you just stick with the main story. It took me 90 hours but I did a lot of side missions.

While I really liked this game, I hated that there was no boss fights(not including Metal Gear Sahelanthropus)
The MGS series has some of the best boss fights ever. Revolver Ocelot, Cyborg Ninja, Sniper Wolf, Psycho Mantis, The End, The Boss, Solidus Snake, Liquid Ocelot etc...
You didnt even fight Skullface in this.

Since I can buy a Day One version for PS3 for under $15 new, I want to try this.
But the lack of combat sounds ridiculous!

I first played Metal Gear back on the NES and absoulty loved it. Did play the playstation1 game and loved it too. Never played the sequels but I did hear they're just movies with a little bit of game occasionally. Did try playing the one that came out on the 3ds but thought that was crap. Cut sc ene cut scene cut scene and saving took bloody ages. Also wasnt too keen on the controls. Nothing like the early games that i loved.
Always wondered if i should give V a go, hoping i will enjoy it for old times sake...but I dunno. I dont like the direction games are going by trying to be movies.

Annoying thing about the Snake Eater 3DS port for me is I can't get past the first Volgin fight. Ever. It freezes the instant he does one of his lightning attacks and I have to force a power off. I don't know if it's because I'm using a 2DS, but needless to say, I was disappointed, especially after putting so much time to get so far. Also, something else that kind of confused me about Phantom Pain, and this probably ties into the whole unfinished nature of it, is there's two chapters in the game, right. But chapter two doesn't start until after the main villain of the game dies and it's not even like chapter two is a short post-game thing; there's hours of content left. You build up Skull Face as this menacing guy and he's doing all this awful shit, but he doesn't even make it past the first half of the game? God, you could write a book on the problems with Phantom Pain's story.

Skull Face explaining his whole plan on that jeep while Boss just sits there like a dope saying nothing was hilarious.
But yeah, the whole thing was obviously unfinished.

The whole MGS chronological story is batshit insane, but I love it.
One of my favourite things in gaming life is dicking around on MGS 1 with the stealth suit. It will never get old.

The writing was on the wall when they released Ground Zeroes to get extra revenue. MGSV was not cheap to make.
The Skullface jeep ride was incomprehensibly bad. I think they invested so much of the budget and time into making the vast open world when in all honesty the could've just made larger areas, segmented them off with an open field ahead, and saved themselves so many man hours. I liked what they did with the open world, but it was at the expense of necessary cutscenes (some of those tapes NEEDED cutscenes) and the pacing of the game.
Gameplay-wise, I invested so much time into it and loved the hell out of the mechanics. I played it well beyond its ending when I finally warmed up to the FOB stuff. While that felt unnecessarily distracting in the main game, it was fun to get into once the main game was finished. I loved protecting my materials in live combat on my base and then going over to that guy's base to steal his stuff. I think all the countless notifications in the main game rubbed people the wrong way about FOB - I know it did for me while I'm trying to digest what the hell was going on in that story.
[Spoilers] Quiet's story turned out to be good. You just had to ignore the very obvious plothole of her just being able to write out stuff on paper. I loved her conclusion and in a rare bit of emotion from MGSV, her decision to break her silence to save Snake's life.
The ending, which alludes to "Big Boss" in his quarters about to face off with Solid Snake after listening to the revelation tape, was a great moment. It brought the prequel series with the main cannon series full circle.
It's a game that incites many mixed feelings.

What weird/great timing for this thread as I've just spent a week playing/beating it. It's a great stealth game...and that's it. The full on combat is terrible.
There are two types of missions, extraction and elimination. But actually there is only one type of mission because it's ALWAYS better to just Fulton the elimination target. There are about 6 types of side missions and they endlessly repeat. I found base management to be the real appeal.
Storyline is meh, the twist is wha? and the pay to play nature of FOB's is unacceptable.
In summary, I hate this game with the heat of a thousand suns! I will probably put another 50 hours in and then I am done.
Re: The Skullface jeep ride, I really think that was supposed to be this game's ladder climb.

You didnt even fight Skullface in this. I was seriously preparing for that, but then it was just Sahelanthropus and finishing off Skull Face afterwards.

Something I found amusing too is when you're talking to Ocelot or Kaz and they have something important to tell you and they're like "I put it on cassette tape" as opposed to just telling us on the call.

Speaking of Kaz and Ocelot, I got them mixed up a few times because Troy Baker did a pretty shit job as Ocelot.
His voice wasn't unique at all, especially compared to Patric Zimmerman in MGS1,2,4

I mean I love MGSV and the FOX engine is a thing of magic but Konami clearly didn't release a finished product. I do find it a bit off that they somehow managed to crowbar Psycho Mantis & Colonel Volgin into it which seemed more like fanservice for the sake of fanservice.

I actually think Kiefer blew Hayter out of the water epseically during the Mother Base purge mission and the Paz side missions

His voice wasn't unique at all, especially compared to Patric Zimmerman in MGS1,2,4 Ocelot kind of sounds like a generic mining prospector and I don't know whether that hurts or helps his character for me. I do find it a bit off that they somehow managed to crowbar Psycho Mantis & Colonel Volgin into it which seemed more like fanservice for the sake of fanservice. For what it's worth, I really liked both Mantis and Volgin/Man on Fire in the hospital intro. I don't know about the explanation given for them interacting as it was a little iffy, but I thought they were good additions. Weird seeing Psycho Mantis with hair, though. Also, when "The White Mamba" was first mentioned, I seriously thought it was going to be Jack/Raiden as opposed to Eli. 'Cause why not?

I could finally tell them apart by thinking of Miller as just having run up the stairs and was out of breath and Ocelot as sounding like a young Doug Dimmadome
