Ira Levin and Shirley Jackson are two authors that I always enjoy. Yeah, Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby is excellent. If the OP has already seen Roman Polanski's film adaptation, he should know that the film is perhaps that best example of a film successfully replicating a novel that you'll ever encounter. I also enjoyed reading Levin's sequel to Rosemary's Baby: Son of Rosemary. Other horror novels I enjoyed: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein Clive Barker's The Hellbound Heart Bram Stoker's Dracula (I like this novel for parts, not for the work in its entirety.)

Ya some one else is a Laymon fan. The beasthouse series is great, really out of the 12 or so of his novels I have read only Dark Mountain and The Lake were bad. From what I have read the Lake was unfinished when Laymon died. I quite liked Dark Mountain, I'm surprised it tends to get a bad rep. It's a bit clichéd but I enjoyed it. The Lake is one of the few I haven't read yet. The only ones I haven't liked so far were Flesh and All Hallow's Eve. The rest though I've enjoyed a lot. My main issue with Dark Mountain was it reads like a first draft not a finished novel. Never read the two ya mention. First Laymon I read was the uncut The Woods are dark.

"Come Out Tonight" feels REALLY disjointed and suffers from massive idiot plot because of it.

I just finished The Troop by Nick Cutter and I highly recommend it. If you put the movie Slither and Lord of the Flies into a blender, you'd get this book.

The second biggest reading favor you can do yourself is Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series, the biggest favor is to stop after book ten.
Another recommendation of Laymon. I've got 32 of his books on my bookshelf and had a blast reading each one. Not for the weak of heart, though, rape and murder can happen to anyone. Endless Night is my personal favorite
Another shout out for Bently Little. 19 of his books are displayed on my shelf after Laymon's. Another author not above crossing boundaries if you love that kind of things as I do. Highly recommend starting with The Store.
Not to be missed is John Saul, brilliant at writing the genuinely creepy. I took his book Creature to bed once and by 5 a.m., I was still reading, finishing the whole thing.
For any fans of vampires, you can not do better than Brian Lumley, always portraying them as the nightmares they are.
Last, but certainly not least, Mr. Richard R. McCammon. Swan Song is his The Stand, Boys Life is the best coming of age tale imaginable, and my personal favorite The Wolf's Hour, a masterfully told werewolf tale set during WW2.

Brian Keene is pretty good from what I hav read. Ghoul is a weird mix of The Goonies and It.

I just wanted to say I'm really glad we have this thread because I'm always looking for new writers to check out. I went to my local used book store and picked up a couple Edward Lee books based on recommendations in this thread.

Which ones were they? uh "Flesh Gothic" and "Brides of the Impaler". the blurbs on the back seemed promising. I've also been reading books from this dude named Bryan Smith. he's pretty good. kinda somewhere between Richard Laymon and David J. Schow. another absolutely great splatterpunk writer I recommend is Michael Boatman (yes, the guy who played Carter on Spin City). dude's pretty sick and twisted, with a wry sense of humour to his work.

Flesh Gothic is good. Imagine the old film The Haunting, but with a porn film being filmed in the house. Brides of the Impaler...well it is the worst Lee I have read. It isn't horrible. But there is many many dropped plotlines. Black Train is my favorite I have read from him. Also look for Triage. It is a collection of 3 novellas. Richard Laymon,Jack Ketchum and Edward Lee were given this premise "A person walks into a place of business and opens fire with a gun." and went with that. Lee's novella is the best in the collection. Now I have only read one book from him,Succulent Prey, but Wrath James White is damn good. But like Lee,Ketchum and Laymon he isn't for the faint of heart.
