We talked about this in the Flash Gordon Thread
But just think if the 77 movie was a bomb how history would be different. Lucas has said before if it failed he doesn't think his career would have went much longer. He might just did a TV movie to finish Star Wars. How it would have effected the Special Effect companies and how many people would have got into the movie business without Star Wars

Well movie wise we would not see the Star Wars knock offs (see Flash Gordon thread ). But also other big budget sci-fi films like Alien and the Star Trek movie series may not have been made. And from there we could be in a world without The Terminator, Predator and Indiana Jones films.. and with that a tree branch of other great stuff not being made. Joke aside Jurassic Park will probably exist, cause that's if Jaws was still a big success in this alternate universe

You'd still have sci-fi films, but they'd probably be of a series nature like 2001 or Alien. You'd have a different Deckard and Indiana Jones as well (if you'd have Indiana Jones at all), as Harrison Ford you most likely have been a jobbing actor making a living as a carpenter.

Star Trek was set to return as a television series until the success of Star Wars prompted the producers to shift their plans to the big screen. Imagine how differently that franchise would have turned out otherwise.

The one minor plus side is we would probably never have had Jar Jar Binks or the Christmas Special.

The movie industry would have eventually moved away from the Auteur Director era and into the blockbuster emphasis; a failure of Star Wars would have just slowed down that process.
The real knock on effect would be less confidence in creating media empires around sci-fi and fantasy universes via live action film out of a belief that any money invested in such an endeavor wouldn't be worth it.
As far as Star Wars itself, had it been only a modest success Lucas was planning to do a low budget sequel via Splinter of the Mind's Eye. Had it bombed entirely, its likely we wouldn't even had that.

Star Wars' success was a big reason why Roddenberry and co. were able to convince Paramount to make the Star Trek movies as it proved there was a market for Sci-Fi blockbusters. I'm sure someone would've resurrected the show eventually in this remake-happy entertainment industry. But Star Trek as the media franchise we know it now would not exist.
I can sorta see the original Star Wars becoming one of those cult sci-fi classics that nerds love, like Blade Runner, Logan's Run, etc. and maybe that status would've eventually got it a new movie or a TV show. But nerd culture as we know it would be very different.

I think something would have arrived that would have been just as impactful as Star Wars.

Industrial Light and Magic would have been a company that just sold lights.

George Lucas would have been fine. Star Wars was a vanity project that 20th Century Fox had to tolerate in order to sign Lucas in the first place. He was in demand and I doubt that would have changed based on a sci-fi flop. Hell, I bet ILM still would have been a thing since Lucas would have used them to do effects for other movies that Fox had him do.
As far as the cast goes, many of them still would have had careers.
Mark Hamill was a good looking kid who has shown versatile talents, so I think he would have been fine, especially once voice work became a thing for him.
Harrison Ford fell ass backwards into two big roles for him (Han Solo and his role in American Graffiti) so he would have been a more known entity for casting agents. He might not have been as big as he became, but even that is debatable.
Carrie Fisher still would have been a pretty member of Hollywood royalty, so she probably would have gotten more chances. Even if not, she would have still gotten the chance to be Hollywood's top script doctor, so she would have been fine.
Cushing and Guinness were already legends whose careers were set.
Anthony Daniels might not have fared as well, but I hear he is kind of a douche so that might not have been the worst thing.
Mayhew would have also not had convention money coming in as well, and from all accounts he is a sweetheart that I would not wish that on.
As far as where Hollywood would have gone, Spielberg still would have been churning out massive hits at that time. Jaws and ET alone would have prompted studios to try to replicate that success. Hell, Indiana Jones probably still would have been a thing. Star Wars flopping would not have diminished Spielberg's Hollywood shine at all and as I said before, Lucas would still be in demand. A Lucas/Spielberg collaboration would have been very tempting for any studio.

Peter Mayhew would have been OK. A big man like him would have always found roles in Hollywood. If not, he always had the option of going back to work for the NHS, which is a good job to have.

I've heard the whole "Anthony Daniels is a douche" thing before. Met him a couple years ago at a con, couldn't have been a nicer, more lovely guy.

Really, I think this film and the whole series really started to take on a life of its own in the last 20 years. It was prevalent in the 80s yea, but now it is a part of pop culture that is EVERYWHERE daily

The obvious thing is of course is that he would have done Splinter of The Mind's Eye as a sequel to Star Wars. That probably would have come and gone in theaters since it would have been a fragment of what Star Wars was.

As somebody who frequents a lot of conventions I have only met Mayhew once in the 90s and he was grumpy then, and is reputation is that of somebody is usually grumpy but can have his good moments.

On the plus side the James Bond movie Moonraker would not exist in it's current form. With laser battles in SPACE!
It would if they ever made it, more faithful to the book.
