My kids genuinely did not understand why kids would get up early on a Saturday to watch TV. They will never understand the pure happiness I felt laying in front of the TV with a big ass bowl of cereal and this would come on:

Take away your kids' media for a week. No TV, no movies, nothing streamed, nothing.
Then let them have their favorite for three hours on a Saturday morning, with the aforementioned big ass bowl of cereal.
They'll get it.

Here was more my era, including the greatest creation the networks came up with during this period; the Saturday Morning Cartoon Pre-Season Preview Specials. Here's one from 1985 www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGJ1y_Qsa3g

I was just watching these last night. I was most interested in the ones from about 1985 to 1991. That was my main period.

Here's one from 1985 I vaguely remember The Littles and that PacMan cartoon. That One Saturday Morning intro is one of the later ones. My hardcore Saturday morning cartoon era is X-men and Spidey on Fox.

And let's not forget USA's little cartoon tent pole on Sunday mornings.

Try explaining to kids that once upon a time you didn't need cable or internet to watch cartoons(PBS Kids doesn't really count).

Yeah, they just need to understand that TV programs used to only be able to be watched during the time they were scheduled to be on TV. If they wanted to see cartoons, it was the only time they would be able to see them. My era had VCRs, but who wanted to use them unless they absolutely couldn't be in front of the TV?

My biggest example of that is missing the episode of DBZ where Goku goes super for the first time. Then turning it on the next day and trying to figure out why the hell Goku is blond with blue eyes.

Yeah, I wasn't even figuring in episodic TV, where missing one week meant that you had no earthly idea what was going on. This also might explain why shows like Dragon Ball Z or even Raw start with recaps, because it was very possible that regular viewers missed a week and it actually meant they couldn't watch that week's show.

Back when Smackdown was on broadcast TV my family fell on hard times and we didn't have cable so I could only watch SD. I lived for Raw Rewinds because it was the only way I could see what happened.

Fast forward to about 4:24 on this video. Now I watched Saturday morning cartoons long before these aired, and I watched Saturday morning cartoons long after these aired, but for some reason these Claymation bumpers, and these alone, still haunt my dreams.

I can see how in an era where you can literally watch whatever the hell you want whenever you want the idea of needing to get up and watch tv on a specific day must sound bizzare.

My era had VCRs, but who wanted to use them unless they absolutely couldn't be in front of the TV? We got a VCR,it was a betamax,in 77 or 78. So I would use it every Saturday morning to record cartoons that were airing while my favorites aired. Then would watch that tape on Sunday morning. My oldest son understands Saturday morning cartoons,he is old enough to have caught the tailend of the era of cartoons on the broadcast networks every Saturday morning. My youngest....well for him there has always been Nick and Cartoon Network. And really no cartoons on Saturday morning broadcast networks. He has watched the 70s Hanna Barbara Saturday Morning sets. And I got a few dvds that are 4 or 5 hour blocks of say 1985 CBS saturday morning cartoons with the commercials included or 1995 FoxKids saturday morning. He has watched one of those with me. But yeah to anyone under say 26 or so Sat AM cartoons isn't a thing. Me,I was up at 5am every Saturday. And could watch cartoons, flipping back and forth between the 10 or so channels we got, until 12pm. I love the late 70s/early 80s Filmation stuff. Tarzan,Zorro,Flash Gordon and BLACKSTARR! Speaking of that DVD with the 95 Foxkids stuff. Last year on her birthday, just happened it fell on a Saturday. I got my girlfriend up at 6am. And we sat in front of her tv in our pjs. Big huge bowls of cereal. Watching that DVD. She is the reason I tracked it down, after hearing her talk to her brother about how much the two of them loved the FoxKids mid 90s line up of cartoons.

Yeah, Kids have networks dedicated for them now plus streaming. Us? We had ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX on Saturdays and USA on Sunday with syndication shows peppered in during the week or the Disney Afternoon. And that's not including the wrestling!
And everyone had a cartoon. Have crossover appeal? Can make a toy out of ya? 30 minutes is yours! Rambo(NOTHING IS OVER!! NOTHING!!! YOU JUST DON'T TURN IT OFF!!) had a show. MC Hammer had a show. The Mario Brothers had THREE. Sonic had three. And the theme songs. Is there anything magical as this?
But seriously, let your kids see some of the stuff from the 80's and 90's. It's a little chessy and dated, yes, but there's a magic to them(And when they got dark, man they got DARK......Hello, Bravestarr!)

I can remember back when networks made their Saturday morning lineups such a priority to produce primetime specials for them.
Stuff like ABC sitcom stars promoting the new shows ("Holy crap, there's a Sonic cartoon coming based on the comics! I'm in!") and Kids WB's first season premiere were major events at my age.

I remember hyping the Animaniacs leaving fox and coming to Kids WB for like a month and on the day they had a big faux celebration...

That totally reminds me. It's not just Saturday morning blocks I miss its this: When Friday meant actually hanging with my family watching stuff that we all liked.
