Was just thinkin how quickly this poor dude went from rising star many thought was funny to "f*** that guy!"
Seemed like an overnight thing.
I still think he had a few funny bits, while acknowledging mostly it was delivery; and he definitely catered more to the dudebro/sorority crowd.
But maaaan, guy went from bein in movies to just bein a near pariah with a quickness. Don't know I have ever seen that without some major scandal or somethin.
People just collectively decided they were DONE w the dude.

I remember a YouTube video from 2008/9 I think...it was "Here are a bunch of jokes Dane Cook ripped off from Louie CK". Like 99% of the comments were "Louie who? F that nobody because Dane Cook is FAMOUS!"
My oh my how the world has changed.

......in the eyes of the mainstream/Hollywood world, his heyday is gone.
But he's still touring, doing stand up shows, making money...
We all think that when someone vanishes, they're done and over. Dane Cook hit huge stardom and then faded......but it built him a stable career on a level he can absolutely live on now; he slipped back into a good life.

From what I understand, the cardinal sin of stand-up is stealing jokes and presenting them as your own. Cook had great delivery and presentation, but the material was not his own. When you think about it, for some comics, being able to perform their bits is their ticket to making it. Now imagine if someone with more reach uses material they heard you say without your permission.
At around the same time you had Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia rise from pretty much out of nowhere to become the top two comics of their time. Then they both were exposed as joke thieves, Carlos more than Dane (you need to watch the Joe Rogan video if you haven't), and their credibility depleted.

I never found him funny. A friend of mine told me I had to see this guy's stand up special. He had it on DVD and lent it to me. I love comedy and I love to laugh. I was bummed out when I didn't laugh once. His audience was going crazy for him. I'm not the type to laugh along with an audience just because they're laughing. I'll laugh if something is genuinely funny to me. I even watched a couple more of his specials on Comedy Central because I wanted to give him another chance. I can find humor in just about anything but his shows did nothing for me. I personally never got the appeal. There was a whole lot of hype but not much substance to keep it going.
I thought some of his movies were ok for being silly comedies. Employee of the Month and Good Luck Chuck weren't horrible. They were kind of that Kevin James level entertainment. Not exactly great but not unwatchable either. I thought he might have a chance at a career in Hollywood if he could grab some better roles but he went to voiceover projects and didn't do much else. Maybe he's made enough money and doesn't really care anymore. Good luck to him with whatever he's up to.

He's still out there in the same way that Dane Cook is.

I really liked him in Mr. Brooks, a serious role he did with Kevin Costner

I think he lost a lot of good will when he was in a movie that was basically him having a lot of naked women on him for the duration of filming.
Also, the joke stealing was big, but I don't think many people went to see his shows cared, because the delivery was always key for him.
But the main thing, people got tired of his joke style. The nickleback issue, where people like something, then it all sounds the same, and people stop showing up.

The only decent thing he ever did was 'Waiting', and even then, he had a tiny role.
Tells you all you need to know about people's ability to stomach him. IMO his standup is horrible, and he is among the worst ever...even if all of his material were his own. You can't be a great comic based on delivery alone.

I remember loving his stand up in the early 2000s, but once he got super popular and started doing movies it's like he just stopped being funny all at once.

I actually thought he was pretty funny with his first album, but yeah, the shine came off him quick. As far as his falling off the earth goes, I'm pretty sure he's in Chris Tucker mode, ie, so rich he doesn't have to work a day in his life again, and has been ok not being in the spotlight much, save for the occasional appearance, like being in American Gods.

Part of it (at least for me) is that he became such a smug douchebag once he became famous.

Eh, I've got no beef with him. Vicious Circle is an all time great comedy special.

OP was right where it felt like he went from loved to hated overnight. Like I kind of discovered him later in 2006 and it felt like everyone still loved him but hated him a few weeks later due to overexposure with all those bad movies he was in and joke thieving and looking like the typical douchey dude bro.
I actually liked Good Luck Chuck and there was actually some clever humour in it like I loved how they played Bela Lugosi is Dead during every moment about the curse. But a movie where he's a super hot successful rich dude bro who has sex with every hot chick and falls in love with Jessica Alba right where your likeability was already dropping wasnt exactly a good career move.
I did like those promos he did with Louis CK about the joke stealing.

I thought he was funny before he got big, and I was like sixteen.
I did think he was funny on Workaholics.
