George Strait at 20? Nevermind the fact that he's only the best-selling country artist of all-time. And given that this is Rolling Stone, it's no surprise that Johnny Cash is in the top 3, considering their readers' view of "I hate country...except for Johnny Cash 'cause he's cool...even though I can only name one song of his!" Sickening. And I'm not even a country fan. I agree with you on Strait but Cash def deserves to be #3 if not higher (he's my personal favorite country artists but no one beats Hank), His longevity, crossover appeal, cultural impact and influence along with mythologized life make him unmmatched in country music and only Elvis and maybe Bob Dylan and John Lennon are the only solo artists who can surpass him in those regards.

John Denver doesn't belong on this list at all. He was a folk singer. He had more in common with Bob Dylan and James Taylor than he did the country genre. Solid top 10, though. Can't be as bad as when people lump Anne Murray with country still.

Why is Garth Brooks in the top 10? Correct me if I'm wrong, but he was HUGE in the late 80's/early 90's. He's got to be one of the most successful country acts of all time.

My conception of Country music is pretty much limited to the 80's and 90's as it's what my parents listened to.

Garth Brooks also has six of the top ten best selling country albums of all time. His spot is certainly deserved

His spot is certainly deserved How many would Merle,Hank Sr and Willie have if they were at the peak of their careers after soundscan changed how the charts are compiled? I am not a Garth fan,but he should be in the top 50,but not in the top ten.

Not only one of the biggest acts in country, but music altogether and probably a huge reason country music has helped to transcend into the mainstream.

Lots of his sales records is cause not long after Brooks first record came out,how Soundscan tabulated album sales changed. Every 15 years or country breaks into the mainstream, whether it was Dolly Parton in the ups or Alabama in the 80s. Garth majority benefited in album sales by coming around after the Soundscan change. Plus look at the length of his career compared to people who kept making music their entire lives. Didn't Brooks take a long, multi year, break after the Chris Gains fiasco? Like i said for what he did he deserves top 50, but there is too many artists that did so much more that got ranked lower than Brooks.

I was going to mention some of the older artists that crossed over seem a bit low (Kenny Rogers says hello), then I noticed a glaring omission that isn't even on the list.
Where the f*** are the Oak Ridge Boys?!!

I get your soundscan tabulation but who had more crossover success or sold more concert tickets than Garth Brooks? What metric would you use to put soneone over him?

Garth Brooks has been around 20+ years and is on a world tour. Hes been cited by countless artists from Jason Aldean to Adele as an influence, any criteria you use merits Garths position.
