Princess Twilight Sparkle is stuck in the middle of preparations for a big friendship festival, when the mighty Storm King and his unscrupulous commander Tempest Shadow invades Ponyville with their troops. The sinister dictator wants to conquer the Kingdom of Equestria, so that he can finally rule the entire world. Tempest herself originates from Equestria. During her childhood she lost her horn in an accident and thus also her magical abilities. She felt ostracized by the other ponies and changed to the side of evil. However, should Tempest succeed at stealing the four princesses' magical abilities, then the Storm King would give her back her horn.
Tempest can quickly overhwlem the princesses of the Day, Night and Family. However, Twilight Sparkle, the Princess of Friendship, will not give up so easily. Together with her best friends Applejack and Pinkie Pie; Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy; Rarity and baby dragon Spike, she flees to the south. There she hopes to find the legendary Queen of the Hippogriffs and to ally with her against the Storm King.
While fleeing, Tempest Shadow is always hot on their heels. Twilight and Co. have their hooves full trying to constantly shake off their nasty pursuer. In addition, they have to weather tons of adventures. They encounter a shady tomcat called Capper, who offers to help them, but in truth is double-crossing them. They fly as stowaways in the airship of Captain Celaeno and her silly birds. Eventually, they land in the glittering underwater kingdom of Seaquestria, where Queen Novo has created an entirely new world. Before the Mane 6 can convince her to join them in the fight against the Storm King, Twilight has to first learn an important lesson...
Once daring adventurers and pirates, nowadays Captain Celaeno and her airship crew have to content themselves with doing messenger services for the Storm King. But this comes to an end once Celaeno discovers the ponies on board. Suddenly, she remembers how brave and dignified she used to be. At the end, she and her crew play an important role when it comes to saving Princess Twilight and her friends from the Storm King.
Capper is a sneaky con artist - clever and eloquent, on top of possessing a great singing voice. He was once a posh noble cat, but then the Storm King seized power and he lost everything he ever owned. So he resorted to tricking clueless victims or stealing from them with sharp paws. In essence, however, he's not a bad guy.
Once ruler of the powerful hippogriff kingdom, whose inhabitants were half-horse and half- bird, Queen Novo had to flee when the Storm King invaded her realm with his troops. After that she transformed herself and her subjects into seaponies (half-horse, half-fish) with the help of hippogriff magic. Today she rules the underwater kingdom of Seaquestria and enjoys the good life: Coconut martinis and massages from a squid named Jamal. But even though she doesn't admit it, secretly Queen Novo dreams of returning to her old life on land. She is Princess Skystar's mother.
Grubber, a pug-faced hedgehog, descends from an old lineage of warriors. To his misfortune he is clearly smaller than his kinsmen. But this doesn't prevent him from opening his big fat mouth like nobody else. Thanks to his quick-wittedness and cleverness he enjoys the favor of the ruthless Storm King and may call himself his assistant. He schemes nasty battle plans and has always a cool saying in store - but in fact Grubber would rather prefer lying on the beach sipping cocktails
