And we say this stuff is too predictable.
How do we digest this? Is it something to be concerned about for Balor, in terms of dropping down the card away from world title contention? Should we be happy for Samson getting a featured match well above his expected peak on the roster? Realistically, this is probably only busy work for Balor until a bigger program becomes available for SummerSlam, but I'm uncertain as to what that would actually be.

They want to push Samson and Balor's still nominally important but is at the same time completely irrelevant.

Samson is doing some great heel work and doesn't lose any momentum with a loss. Plus it gives Balor something to do before summerslam season and maybe he gets into the title picture again.

If they let Finn actually win this and come off looking effective, it's at worst a break-even point for him as far as beating a heel who's getting booed as hard as Samson is, while Samson gets to look good working with a golden boy. It's busy work, but at least it's busy work that could see a face go over a heel who's got genuine heat on him, which seems like it shouldn't be more than we should ask for from WWE but.

A Clogged Universal Title scene with Joe, Lesnar, Roman, and Strowman, and their inability to move on from Ambrose/Miz in the IC Title Picture have lead to not only Balor kicking rocks but Rollins, Wyatt, and now of all things Cass might be thrown into this loop.
It's clear we're in a holdover period until Balls has passed and then they can focus on Summerslam Season. Im sure the same will be said for Smackdown and Battleground.

Balor is sort of the odd man out at the moment since they seem to keep teasing feuds for him and never pulling the trigger
They teased Balor/Wyatt after the Superstar Shakeup but that went no where and they teased him and Lesnar but I assume they didn't want to "waste" that match at GBOF
With Dean/Miz tied up in their own shit (Balor could of been good mix in that), Lesnar/Joe, Strowman/Reigns, and Wyatt/Rollins all the big name players on the brand are tied up.

I think I would have preferred Balor v Mia and Ambrose v Samson

Well, the creative team are a bunch of hacks and their work is subject to the whims of a senile, steroid-addled geriatric. That's about the long and short of it.

I guess I see the Drifter as coming up to Balor's level more than Balor dropping down the card.
They are high on Samson, and the crowd wants to see his douche-guitar-hippy ass beat. It's a fine feud.

This is the problem with stacking one show. That's 7-8 upper card/main eventers on one show. How many do you really need?

It would not be much of a stretch to put Samson into, say, Bray Wyatt's thrall and end us up with a Wyatt Family v.2.0 against Finn and Seth, perhaps peaking with a team cage match inside Big Blue (I know - pipe dream, but...). Raise the stakes a little by throwing in a "damsel in distress" whom Wyatt claims is Sister Abigail. This would build everybody up: Seth continues building his babyface cred; Finn comes off looking tougher and more capable of facing the big dogs and, possibly, beating someone like Lesnar for that Universal title; Bray Wyatt gets his groove back; while Samson draws heat to the Family and helps rebuild it as a fearsome threat to order on Raw. It's the kind of high-level feud which takes a good chunk of your roster out of title contention temporarily but will still draw a big house and pump up TV ratings. So, of course, WWE's gonna nope the hell out of it.

I like it, if he wins the feud (and he should) it will give him momentum for Summerslam

I kind of like the idea of it. They're high on Sampson, Finn has nothing to do and gives them both an opportunity away from the crowded main event scene to do something good before something bigger for Finn comes, probably, at Summerslam.

How? Because Balor went out to help Samson tune his guitar but he took too long getting to the ring.

Because they are trying to make something out of Sampson and it's better than Balor aimlessly doing squash matches/get dominated until I do my five moves of doom matches against lower card guys.
Plus it's better than feuding against Bray Wyatt a feud where both guys can't afford to lose momentum. Sampson is also one of the few guys that draws real heat and he isn't getting "This guy sucks and doesn't deserve it" heat on the main roster.

Balor needs something to do right now, so why not give him something against a newcomer who gets heat from the crowd and at the same time helps the newcomer get exposure. They also even had Balor mention last night that he still has his sights set on regaining the Universal Title right before Samson attacked him. Pretty good booking, IMO.
But if you are wondering the kayfabe reason, Samson has been trying to perform for weeks and keeps getting cut off. Tries again this week only for someone ELSE to do it. Samson finally has had enough and sees an opportunity to attack a huge star in the process to make a name for himself.
It all makes pretty good sense all the way around.

I dunno but Bo Dallas looked tougher and more believable to me then Finn last night so I think this is fine.
