Episode 465: "Justice For The Winners! Sengoku's Strategy In Action!"
Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...a navy ship with several weirdos crashing down?
And so Little Oars Jr. succumbs to the wounds brought to him by the Warlords in a tense scene where he desperately tries to reach Ace before ultimately failing. This leads us to a fairly "quiet" episode (well, as quiet as you can call an episode where a war is going on) where we watch several different settings:
-Coby and Helmeppo finally trying to run away only to witness the cruelty of Admiral Akainu who kills a marine soldier in cold blood for wanting to run away from the battle. I definitely don't like Akainu and I hope he suffers a terrible fate one day.
-Doflamingo being pseudo-philosophical talking about who decides what justice is while fighting one of the Whitebeard commanders. We are starting to see that his power seems being able to manipulate and control a person's body somehow. Though how he does this remains a mystery.
-The best part of the episode is definitely Garp getting emotional besides Ace. It is really touching to see how much he cares about Ace despite him being, unlike Luffy, unrelated to him. This is emphasized by the scenes where Ace as a baby calms down in Garp's arms just after Rouge has died and their interactions while Ace was still a child. Garp definitely is a far more sympathetic character than his hard exterior might imagine and I am starting to like him more and more.
Ultimately, a strategy is set into action that has to do with them executing Ace immediately instead of waiting for the scheduled time when suddenly...Luffy and his rag-tag group falls out of the sky. How will they effect the course of the battle now?
And what kind of power does Vice Admiral Tsuru have, enabling her to turn people into clothes hanging out to dry?
A good episode to be seen here.
Manga Differences: -The flashbacks involving Garp are a lot more detailed compared to the manga. The manga basically only contains the brief snippet of Ace yelling at Garp to not hit Luffy. -We actually see the two young pirates attacking Vice Admiral Tsuru before she uses her power. In the manga, we only see the aftermath. -Otherwise nothing much to say besides the usual scene extensions.

Episode 466: "Team Straw Hat Arrives! Tension Grows At The Battlefield!"
Team Straw Hat certainly arrived with a splash.
This time, the focus lies on Luffy's arrival on the battlefield...after we first go to see how they managed to arrive by falling out of the sky in the first place. Turns out that they got stuck in the aftermath of Aokiji freezing Whitebeard's shock wave and through an accident fell off the peak of the wave. Luckily, they managed to fall into the hole in the ice created by Jozu earlier. It is sweet seeing all the various reactions towards Luffy's arrival from genuine joy (Coby, Hancock) to curious indifference (Mihawk, Kizaru) to downright hatred (Gecko Moria).
In another interesting scene, Luffy comes face-to-face with Whitebeard and does not show any fear towards this big pirate leading to hilarious reactions all around. Whitebeard in turn seems to be impressed by this young lad and allows him to fight as long as he is not in his way.
What hurts this episode a bit is time-killing filler being added to it (like the prolonged scene where Luffy's navy ship catches the wave and rides it up or when he looks everywhere to find Ace after falling from the sky) which unnecessarily slows the plot down.
Otherwise, still a decent episode.
Manga Differences: -The whole navy ship scene until they get stuck in the ice is all anime filler. The manga flashbacks to them already being stuck. -Luffy's drawn-out search for Ace is also an anime addition. In the manga, he almost immediately spots him. -There was no flashback to Luffy fighting Crocodile in the past, explaining how Luffy knows that water is Crocodile's weakness. -The usual scene extensions.
See you all tomorrow!

Episode 467: "Even If It Means Death! Luffy vs. The Navy - The Battle Starts!"
I just began to wonder...if Buggy was on Gol D. Roger's pirate ship, does that mean that he has seen the One Piece at the island of Raftel as well? Or did he join Roger's crew after that particular adventure was finished?
Anywho, Luffy joins the war in earnest by storming towards the execution platform and starting to battle the marine soldiers in front of him while his energy manages to energize the efforts of the rest of the pirates as well. In some exciting sequences, we see Luffy taking care of several marine grunts with all the power he has mastered during the course of his journey (incl. Gear 2 and Gear 3). He also meets some old acquaintances (Fullbody and Jango where, surprisingly, the anime does not include flashbacks to when he met those two) as well as escaping Captain Hina Blackcage's entrapment, something he would not have been able to do back in the Alabasta Arc. Though he still has to evade Kizaru (with help of Ivankov) and lets Jinbei battle Moria (with Jinbei being an excellent opponent for Moria due to his control of sea water, rendering the latter's zombies useless).
Ultimately, in the climatic scene of this episode, Ace tries to keep Luffy from getting to him by insulting him (which he does because he does not want to endanger Luffy) to which Luffy, in his simple way, just says that he is his brother and even if it means death, he will rescue him. Well, we always knew that he has a one-track mind. Though he will probably be targeted especially now that Sengoku spilled the beans about who Luffy's father is to all present.
But who is that strange person that has approached one of the Whitebeard allies, Squard? Questions among questions...
All in all, Luffy running rampant on the marines is heartpounding to see and definitely makes this episode a good one.
Manga Differences: -Luffy engaging Fullbody and Jango is anime filler. In the manga, he only encounters Hina directly. -The scene at the bay entrance with Squard is also an anime only addition. We don't see Squard again until he actually arrives at Whitebeard's location. -The usual scene extensions.
Let us meet the day that follows today!

Episode 468: "Hard Battles One After Another! Devil Fruit Users vs. Devil Fruit Users!"
Buggy’s followers start to remind me of Brian’s followers in “Life Of Brian” a bit in their unconditional belief in his powers. Makes me wonder if Buggy could pull off the “healing a mute” and “letting a berry bush grow” gag with them.
The war continues unabated with an episode focusing on multiple fronts: -Ace deciding to not make a fuss anymore and calmly accepting whether he will be rescued or executed in order to honor Whitebeard’s and Luffy’s efforts in a nice scene. -A funny scene where Whitebeard acknowledges Buggy in order to make the escaped prisoners his allies rather than his foes but which also causes the prisoners to adore Buggy even more (much to the chagrin of Mr. 3). -Moria and Jinbei having a heated and good fight which Jinbei manages to win despite Moria again gulping up shadows to make himself stronger. Jinbei seems more and more like a formidable ally…Despite his obvious “No” answer, Luffy should definitely ask Jinbei whether he would like to become a member of his crew. -Ivankov and Kuma battling it out and it appears that Ivankov knows Kuma from somewhere. But the latter does not show any reaction (even less so than in his former appearances)...followed by Doflamingo insinuating that Kuma is dead? What does that mean?
Finally, the climax of the episode pits Luffy and Smoker against each other in their first meeting since the Alabasta Arc. The fight is beautifully animated in that part of the episode, especially Luffy's rapid-fired Gear 2 punches to catch Smoker, though it becomes obvious that after all this time, Luffy being unable to land a hit against Smoker shows that nothing has changed. Smokers manages to again completely overwhelm Luffy and the latter is only saved by the Power Of Love...no, not by Mike and Maria Kanellis, but by Boa Hancock who manages to go from pissed off to coy schoolgirl in a matter of seconds. How will that encounter end?
All in all, another good episode save for the long sequence where we see seemingly every commander acknowledge Whitebeard's command. We got it the first three times, we did not need to see it another ten times...
Manga Differences: -The scenes with the Decalvan Brothers at the beginning are anime filler. We don't see them in the manga until Whitebeard calls them. -Actually the first few minutes of the episode are mostly anime added scenes (especially Ace's anguish about Whitebeard's and Luffy's attempt to save him). Basically, as soon as Ace calmly explains his resolution, the part where it is mostly filler ends. -The usual scene extensions.
Later days, laddies!

Episode 469: "Kuma's Transformation! Ivan-san's Blow Of Anger!"
A hug more powerful than ponies or Bayley combined!
Before we go to the titular conflict, Luffy manages to "get past" Hancock by giving her a big hug (as thanks for her giving him the keys to Ace's sea prism stone handcuffs), leading to a hilarious imaginary sequence where Hancokc marries Luffy. Although the sequence is complete filler and contains one of my biggest pet peeves in animation (getting lipstick on persons who don't normally wear it turns them uglier in my opinion), Lovey-Dovey Hancock is just too adorable to be mad at for too long. Especially when she flips a switch to fight off Smoker and his underlings.
In the titular conflict, we learn several things: -That Ivankov knows Kuma from previous meetings as he was also a member in the revolutionary army and that Kuma hates the government. -That in the time Luffy landed on Amazon Lily and arrived in Impel Down, Kuma underwent the final operation in his pacifista modification to become a complete weapon with all shreds of his former personality being gone as presented by a smug Doflamingo who seems to enjoy stirring up s*** on the battle field (also seen when he shows up at Crocodile's position on the battlefield later).
Needless to say, not being recognized by Kuma makes Ivankov even more angry than usual resulting in his most deadly attack yet, clearing a path for Luffy by his Galactic Wink. Everything seems clear now for Luffy...but then Hawkeye Mihawk steps in his way. How will Luffy deal with that enemy.
Another good episode despite some of the filler material.
Manga Differences: -As mentioned above, Hancock's imaginary scenarios in this episode are all filler. We always stay on the battlefield in the manga. -The scene with Buggy and his companions forging a plan while hidden in a wax cover by Mr. 3 is also an anime only addition. We don't see Buggy and his gang again until they show up on the Transponder Snail later. -The usual scene extensions.
Tomorrow will be a new day with a new episode!

Episode 470: "The Great Swordsman Mihawk! Luffy Comes Under The Attack Of The Black Sword!"
OK Hancock, we go as far as we can with your fantasies but it stops once we get to the first night between you and your husband.
As the episode title suggests, it is not really a one-on-one fight between Luffy and Mihawk since the latter's black sword gives him a definite advantage both in long-range (as evidenced by him slicing a large piece of the frozen wave) and short range (Luffy having a hard time dodging Mihawk's slashes since he is also able to detect Luffy's movements in Gear 2 mode). What saves Luffy in this one-sided duel is his survival instinct (sensing at one point that Mihawk would have cut his arms off if he went through with an attack in a pretty tense scene) but also the support of his allies like Jimbei, Ivankov and even Buggy (the latter being used by Luffy as a human shield in a pretty funny moment). Afterwards, Mihawk realizes the most potent power of Luffy being his ability to gather supporters around himself that follow him which is apparently a pretty useful power to have. The scenes involving Luffy and Mihawk are definitely the highlights of this episode.
Other scenes compliment this episode as well like the funny as hell scenes with Buggy getting thrown his Muggy Ball back at him (the face he pulls upon realization is again one of the best facial expressions in the show, a perfect example of an "Oh crap!" face) and Hancock getting even more into her schoolgirl fantasies about marrying Luffy, confusing even Smoker.
Ultimately, the situation gets hot for the Whitebeard Pirates and their allies when Sentomaru and his Pacifista Corps arrives from behind. We all know pretty well how powerful those sons of a gun are, so how will the Pirates manage to overcome them? Guess we'll find out in the next episode.
A good 'un.
Manga Differences: -The scenes between Boa Hancock and Smoker are all anime filler (incl. her marriage fantasies). We don't see Hancock again until the Pacifista scene later in the manga. -Luffy getting stuck and Jinbei covering Luffy by fighting Mihawk is also an anime only addition. Originally Mihawk and Jinbei did not engage at all and Luffy did not get stuck. -All the scenes with Buggy and his crew until getting caught in Crocodile's sand storm and after they get blown sky high by his Muggy Ball (including the scene where they got the Transponder Snail) does not appear in the manga at all. We see them again until they start broadcasting Buggy's video across the world. -The usual scene extensions.
The day after today...is when we will meet again.

Episode 471: "The Extermination Strategy In Action! The Power Of The Pacifistas!"
Huh, I didn't know one of Whitebeard's commanders was a crossdresser (or has a very deep voice for a woman).
Well, the pacifistas start moving against Whitebeard's forces, being every bit as terrifying as the ones on Sabaody Archipelago were, firing at every enemy that moves without mercy. But this seems to only be a part of Sengoku's strategy that also involves cutting all the video transmissions...well, except for one that got out of their grasp leading to a funny scene involving Buggy shooting a documentary of some sort about himself on the battlefield (driving Sengoku nuts).
Otherwise, this episode does not follow any rhyme or reason and is less interesting than the previous ones. A brief fight between Mihawk of Flower Vista, one of the Whitebeard commanders...then to Kizaru stopping Luffy in his tracks whereas he gets backed up by other commanders...then to the commanders commenting on the pacifista attacks. Nothing bad really, but nothing that noteworthy either.
Ultimately, the episode ends with a big shocker...Squard, one of the pirate captains who went missing earlier after encountering a mysterious person, suddenly stabs Whitebeard, sending the whole battlefield into a frenzy. What was the reason for this attack? Guess we'll find out in the next episode.
Manga Differences: -A large chunk of the beginning (the pirate captains of the Whitebeard allies commenting on the pacifista attacks, the command to retreat including Smoker retreating from battling Hancock) is anime filler. -We see the fight Mihawk vs. Vista in its entirety in the anime while we got nothing in the manga besides their first clashes while introducing themselves. -Buggy getting prepared for his big appearance on the screen by his crew is also added to the anime. In the manga, we immediately go to the "first take" of his documentary. -The usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 472: "Akainu's Plot! Whitebeard Entrapped!"
Geez, Whitebeard should put memos on all the important marine honchos somewhere if even one of his allied pirate captains cannot recognize one of the three admirals apparently.
This episode unlike some of the previous ones focuses on one thread only: Squard stabbing Whitebeard right in the body. It is interesting to note that he could have probably stabbed him in the heart for the instant kill, but chose not to (probably to hear what his father had to say regarding the accusations). The weird part about the Marine plot is that it apparently works on the assumption that they knew one of the allied captains hated Roger with a passion and never saw one of the admirals before (otherwise, why would Squard trust the word of one of the highest marine head honchos? They seem to be the least likely to be trusted unlike, say, a lowly marine soldier). Most of the episode is dealt with the question whether or not Whitebeard really sold out his comrades. Of course, we as the audience know that it is not true but the same does not go for the allies.
Ultimately, Whitebeard handles it in a noble manner: forgiving Squard for attacking him and managing to convince him that the marine fooled him and destroying the ice waves to give the allies a chance to flee if they so desire. Reinvigorated by Whitebeard showing his true colors, the allies move forward again and Whitebeard himself now joins the fight despite his stab wound.
A really good episode where we get some good characterization out of Whitebeard and even Squard (where we at least can see the reason why the revelation of Ace as Roger's son would cause him to choose betrayal). Though I could have lived without the episode wasting a lot of time in the beginning to get reaction shots from seemingly every single character on the battlefield towards Whitebeard being stabbed.
Manga Differences: -How Whitebeard found Squard fighting in a bar after having his whole crew being killed by Roger is anime filler. None of this was shown in the manga. -Most of the still images of Squard interacting with Ace were also added to the anime and did not appear in the manga. -Some of the usual scene extensions.
Tomorrow will be a new day!

Always enjoy seeing a post other than my own in these threads. Going by my current pace it will probably be before Episode 1000 (or rather somewhere next year) since there will be some breaks in between for the movies and manga volumes. I am mostly surprised that I was actually successful so far in completely avoiding any manga spoilers since I started this in July 2017 where I really don't know anything that happened since then.

Episode 473: "The Encircling Walls Activated! The Whitebeard Pirates Backed Into A Corner!"
I am sure if Whitebeard did not find his calling in piracy, he would be happily welcomed in every water park in existence.
Whitebeard enters the fray and he immediately shows that he is pretty tough even in close combat, easily defeating a giant via his Tremor-Tremor fruit (and causing the whole island and part of the sea to dangerously wobble) and encouraging his men to move forward. Meanwhile, the marine finalizes their deadly strategy...raising encircling walls around the bay and letting Akainu destroy the ice field in the bay via his Magma powers. OK, I get that the main reason for freezing the bay was so that no pirateship could get close to the scaffold area, but it seems that this could have been a lot easier on the marine side (perhaps by Akainu dropping his magma meteors from the beginning).
Luckily, they still have an opening in the part where Little Oars Jr.'s dead body lies where the wall cannot rise due to the heavy body. But first, they have to make it there where the three admirals lie in wait (proving their strength by being able to deflect a shockwave from Whitebeard that might have shattered the execution platform). Will they, or at least Luffy, make it? We'll have to wait and see...
A decent episode, nothing too bad but nothing that remarkable either.
Manga differences: -Originally, Squard broke down crying immediately after Whitebeard lept into action. In the anime, he ponders what led to this situation for a bit until he breaks down. -We never see the operation room for the encircling walls in the manga while we get to see them in the anime. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
Tomorrow will be a break for Manga Volume 60, so see you on Friday!

Episode 474: "Execution Order Issued! Break Through The Encircling Walls!" Geez, who knew that war could be such a hot contested issue? Yeah, this one is a pretty depressing one mainly due to most of its first act focusing on how the Whitebeard pirates get more and more caught in a death trap: Trapped by encircling walls, having magma meteors rain down on them and having the Pacifista army await them at the bay entrance, it really seems like they are just awaiting death at this point. Not to mention Whitebeard's ship, the Moby Dick, getting sunk by the magma meteors as well. It is quite a desolate sight and is perhaps the sequence that reminds us most that this is really a war we are in. And the climax is Luffy moving forward despite getting injured until he is ultimately thrown into the icy depths. Luckily, before it gets too pessimistic, we get a hope spot in Little Oars Jr. being alive after all and Luffy getting thrown over the encircling walls by Jinbei (would have been even better if some of that water fell on the admirals) and sets on straight to attacking the admirals. Meanwhile, it seems that Whitebeard still has a trump card of some sort. What is it? And will Luffy succeed against the admirals? We have to watch tomorrow to find out. A good episode still although it is not something for the easily depressed. Manga Differences: -The Coby/Helmeppo scene is anime filler that does not appear in the manga. -The sequence where Luffy gets flung by an explosion into the water and getting rescued by Jinbei is again anime added content. In the manga, we immediately go to Jinbei having Luffy in his hands before the latter asks him for a favor. -The usual scene extensions (especially strong during the first act). See you all tomorrow!

Episode 475: "Moving Into The Final Phase! Whitebeard's Trump Card For Recovery!"
Now Whitebeard, I am sure you would have achieved victory much earlier if you borrowed Matt Hardy's dilapidated boat.
Well, as imagined, Luffy proves to be no match for the three admirals but luckily gets unlikely support by Crocodile who takes out the executioners in time before they can strike Ace (and, of course, we have to show everyone's reaction before they bring down the blades because we desperately need to pad out this thing some more). Otherwise, we slowly take our time in revealing Whitebeard's big trump card: another boat with paddles instead of being a normal sailing ship. Though how that ship would have come in handy without Little Oars Jr. being at that spot, the frozen ice and everything else. But I guess that's why I am not one of the Four Emperors. Speaking of Oars, I guess this is him finally dying (although who knows with One Piece where nobody seems to be dying in the present. Doubt that will happen anytime soon).
The strange thing however is what Mr. 3 is currently doing in the inner sanctum of Marineford? Guess we'll have to wait and see...
Decent episode.
Manga Difference: -The whole scene with Mr. 3 is anime filler. We do not see him until later in the battle. -The usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 476: "Luffy At The End Of His Tether! An All-Out Battle At The Oris Plaza!"
Geez, for being a slow and lethargic fellow, Kizaru can get off some pretty harsh words.
Yeah, the tension hormone that enabled Luffy to fight as long as he did wears off making him into a punching bag for the vice admirals and Kizaru. It is pretty sad to see Luffy with an alive spirit but weak flesh, being relegated to lie helplessly while the others fight. And several fights we do get, seeing various Warlords fighting off the advancing pirates while the Whitebeard commanders do the same with Marine adversaries.
Besides that, the only really interesting thing is Garp finally entering the fray (in spite of being heartbroken over seeing his grandson crushed like that) in impressive fashion. Though I don't get what Sengok wants Garp to do: He didn't want to let him be on the execution platform, he didn't want him to fight....might as well let him take the day off on holiday.
Decent episode here.
Manga Differences: -The opening "comedy" scene with Ivankov and Jinbei bickering is anime filler. We don't see both again until Ivankov appears with his big face on the encircling wall. -The Coby-Meppo scene is also added to the anime. Coby does not appear during this part until a later part. -The tense scene between Garp and Sengok on whether Garp will act to help Luffy is also an anime-only part that does not appear in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.

Episode 477: "The Power That Will Shorten One's Life! Energy Hormone, Redux!"
No, really, followers of Buggy, that used care I want to sell you is not a piece of junk, but a bonafide 100% working vehicle. Buggy himself inspected it and you can trust Buggy, right?
Before we get to the titular event, we have to witness that despite some small victories (like some of the Whitebeard pirates managing to defeat some Pacifistas in impressive fashion), the Marines prove to be overwhelming, seeing as even Whitebeard gets overwhelmed by his ailments (we remember that when we first met him, he was hooked up to all kinds of IVs and other medicinal equipment), causing Marco and Jozu to be caught off guard and getting injured by the Marines. Oh yeah, and Buggy gets accidentally freed from his icy state (causing another funny misinterpretation from the prisoners. Seriously, Buggy could sell those guys snake oil if he wanted to). So, yeah, it does not look good for the Whitebeard pirates.
We also get an interesting look into Ace's past and see that despite him trying to put on a tough exterior and beating everyone up that says something bad about his biological father, it still stings and causes him to question his right of existence. Pretty deep thoughts for a 10-year-old and it gets juxtaposed kinda sweetly with him breaking down in tears and finally feeling like he wants to live after seeing so many persons risking their lives to save him.
And ultimately, Luffy begs Ivankov to inject him one more time with his energy hormone so that he is able to fight even if it might mean his death. In the meantime, we get to see a neat intertwining of fates as Coby questions his own abilities in reaching his goals after seeing Luffy get beaten by the admirals. Yet Coby also gets new vigor after Luffy lets out a mighty roar immediately following the energy hormone injection. Definitely a neat parallel of scenes on display here.
All in all, a good episode again.
Manga Differences: -The short scenes involving Sengok asking for replacement executioners and them getting ready in the fortress are anime-only scenes. We only later see the new executioners already on the platform. -The scenes involving Coby and Helmeppo are also anime filler. We don't see Coby until he faces Luffy in the next episode in this part. -The flashback on how Buggy survived his being frozen by Aokiji is also added to the anime. We never see this flashback in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.
Until the day that follows today!

Episode 478: "To Live Up To A Promise! Luffy And Coby Collide!"
Hi Coby! *punch* Bye Coby!
Yeah, after Coby gets encouraged again by Luffy getting up to fight, he faces Luffy but as expected Luffy only needs one punch to take Coby out. I guess he needs a little more training to be up to par to Luffy (although it was sweet seeing footage from the very first episode again.)
Otherwise, Luffy moves forward, taking out various marine grunts in impressive fashion while being supported by Ivankov and Hancock (who seriously reacts way too much over his calling her by name...but hey, its still fun to watch) whereas the commanders as well as Whitebeard himself have problems with the onslaught of the admirals. Well, to be fair, Luffy got the equivalent of a health potion so its no wonder that he manages to be able to beat quite a bit of marine ass.
Finally, after the replacement executioners get ready to kill Ace, Luffy releases his Conqueror's Haki again, sending almost the whole battlefield to a peaceful slumber, drawing quite the surprised reaction from everyone. Will this be the move that will turn the tide? We shall see.
A good episode again.
Manga Differences: -Haven't done one of these in a while (though this one is not as definitive as the previous ones were)
Anime Version: Jozu gets frozen solid by Aokiji Manga Version: Jozu gets frozen solid by Aokiji...with his right arm breaking off (hopefully he was a lefty).
-The whole scene with Squard was anime filler. We don't see him again until a certain action a little while away. -Luffy battling all those marine grunts before engaging Coby is also anime added content. There were maybe one or two panels before he got to Coby. -Whitebeard being stabbed and shot by several marines but not falling and standing his ground is also anime-only. -The usual scene extensions.
See ya later, alligator!

Episode 479: "The Scaffold At Last! The Way To Ace Has Opened!"
Took them only about 20 episodes.
Well, Luffy gets a clear path to the scaffold through Whitebeard showing himself to be a true man: admitting his faults and ordering his men to cover Luffy on his way to the scaffold. And it therefore turns into a sort of greatest hits of the past episodes with Crocodile and Mr. 1 showing up to provide support, Hancock again diverting the Pacifistas and Mihawk getting countered from attacking Luffy again. And Inazuma appears again to show off his cutting edge and providing Luffy with a direct bridge to his brother. And that's essentially what this episode is about: Luffy running to the scaffold, the Whitebeard pirates providing exciting support in some scuffles as well as Whitebeard throwing his weight around.
Though next episode should prove interesting with Luffy having to face off with his grandfather. Should be an interesting fight.
A good episode to be seen here.
Manga Differences: -The whole scene with Buggy and his prisoner crew is filler. We do not see them again until after a certain event in a few episodes. -Otherwise, we have the usual scene extensions here.
Tomorrow shall be another episode day!

Episode 480: "Each On Different Paths! Luffy vs. Garp!"
ACE IS FIRED!...I mean, free!
But first, we get the fateful encounter between Luffy and Garp set to flashbacks fleshing out their prior relationship. It really paints a vivid picture of Garp as a grandparent who until this point was portrayed as a jovial fellow but who was pretty rough on Ace and Luffy yet also possessed a kinder side. All he wanted to do was keep them on the right path so that they would not end up where they are today: Ace being on the verge of execution and Luffy also targeted for elimination. Certainly a good characterization of Garp we get here. This is amplified by him ultimately choosing to hold back and let himself be beaten by Luffy which goes unnoticed luckily (except for Sengok).
And then the moment arrives...Luffy has finally reached the scaffold and is close to Ace! After some tense moments with Kizaru destroying the handcuff keys and Sengok using his devil fruit power (that turns him into something akin to Golden Homer from the Simpsons apparently) to punch the brothers to death, they get saved by the lucky appearance of Mr. 3 (whose reason for helping free Ace is shown in a neat flashback).
And now, Ace is finally free of his handcuffs and is ready to blow off some steam! The escape will finally commence...what could possibly go wrong?
Another good episode in a row of them.
Manga Differences: -All the flashbacks with Luffy and Garp are anime filler. There were none at this point in the manga. -The flashback of Mr. 3 taking the place of one executioner was also added to the anime and does not appear in the manga. -Only the usual scene extensions otherwise.
Let us meet again tomorrow!

Episode 481: "Ace Rescued! Whitebeard's Final Order!"
Damn, Whitebeard was kind of a rugged Fabio in his younger days. The ladies should have been all over him.
After finally being released, Ace and Luffy take on the Marine in some pretty swank combination attacks. It is awesome seeing both brothers working together and it makes for a pretty entertaining first act.
Then the drama of the actual title hits. After stopping Squard from sacrificing himself to save everyone, Whitebeard gives his final order as captain: that everyone survives and gets back safely to the new world, meaning that he stays behind to give everyone a chance to flee. Certainly a wonderful display of someone who knows that his time has come and who wants to use the remainder to help the new generation (certainly something wrestlers should take an example in). We also get a flashback to Whitebeard's youth hinting that unlike most pirates, he has no interest in treasure. But what that is what he is interested in actually? We have yet to find that out.
Safe to say, another good episode. Hopefully, the escape will go smoothly.
Manga Differences: -Ace facing off and countering Aokiji's attack is anime only. They never crossed paths in the manga. -Otherwise, it's mostly the usual scene extensions I remember.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 482: "The Power That Can Burn Even Fire! Akainu's Ruthless Pursuit!"
Akainu truly missed his calling by not becoming a heel in wrestling. He could have cut some amazing heel promos.
So, the Whitebeard pirates retreat while Whitebeard holds off the marine forces and probably sink the whole island in the process (including a heartwarming scene where Ace says farewell to Whitebeard in their own way). It's too bad that its all padded out with rather boring Buggy Fun Time Hour segments. While I usually don't mind Buggy since he is usually a pretty funny comic relief, in this part of the story his antics really take one out of the story.
Anyway, after Admiral Akainu starts to cut a scathing heel promo about Whitebeard (which everyone except sees as a trick to rile them into fighting him), Ace angrily faces him which calls back to him being the only one to pursue Blackbeard after what he considered an insult to Whitebeard (as in that he probably looks up to Whitebeard more than any of the other commanders). However, as basic natural sciences tell us, magma is stronger than mere fire so Akainu is easily able to overpower Ace.
And so the climax of the whole arc happens with Akainu targeting Luffy for execution but Luffy gets saved...by Ace sacrificing himself through getting basically stabbed full brunt by Akainu's magma fist. Though I am sure given the past history of "deaths" in the anime so far, I am sure Ace will be A-OK later...right...?
Despite the annoyingness of the Buggy segments this time, it is still a good episode mainly for the climax.
Manga Differences: -All the Buggy related portions in this episode are anime filler. We don't see Buggy in the manga again until he actually flees with the others. -Akainu's first insult to Whitebeard is actually a little bit longer in the anime compared to the original. -The flashback to the Thriller Bark arc to explain to new viewers what the deal with the Vivre Card is is also not in the original. -Another of those usual scene extensions.
Later days!
