Episode 560: "The Fierce Fight Begins! Luffy vs. Hordy!"
You pull her beautiful hair? Hordy, you fiend!
Despite Vander Decken pulling out some last minute tricks (like marking Hordy and trying to hit him with an axe), Hordy manages to finish him off. Oh well, at least that means Shirahoshi won't have to worry about his definition of love anymore. Following this, Hordy quickly gets rid of Manboshi and Ryuboshi who tried to protect their little sister and it looks like he is ready to kill her off...when Luffy manages to use a new "Snake Attack" of his to get rid of Hordy for a bit. And then they face off...and off...and off. Yeah, sorry for those who fell for the title and thought that the fierce fight would now begin for realzies, but that was a mistake. I do wonder though what strategy Fukaboshi and Luffy came up with to take out Hordy.
Meanwhile, on the Fishman Island, Zeo manages to get Wadatsumi out of his funk by telling him blatant lies and even manages to get him to pop a pill which he promptly uses to beat up poor Surume (guess that kraken had a glass chin after all). Luckily, Jinbei and Sanji seem to team up to get rid of him (and do manage to pack quite the punches to hurt the big fella). The only thing I am wondering is though: Why does Nami refer to him as Jinbei-chan? Seems odd to address him with that kind of suffix. Oh well, if he does not have anything against it.
All in all, a decent episode still. Though I have to say that things are progressing kinda slow at the moment for some reason.
Manga Differences: -Nothing really that notable besides the usual scene extensions.
Tomorrow will be another break to watch the TV Special "Episode Of Nami", so see you all on Wednesday!

Episode 561: "A Massive Confused Fight! The Straw Hats vs. The New Fish-Man Pirates!"
Um, aren't we technically in this fight for a few episodes now?
This episode seems to mostly set up the pairings for the Straw Hats vs. the field commanders battles. In the last episode we got Jinbei and Sanji vs. Wadatsumi (although he is not a Fish-Man Pirate commander really) and here we now get: -Zoro vs. Hyozo -Usopp vs. Daruma -Chopper vs. Dosun -Frankie vs. Ikaros -Brook vs. Zeo
Hopefully, those will be competitive fights at least. Besides the set-up, we get some fun scenes (Brook no-selling Ikaros's dried squid spear, Zeo, in turn, no-selling Brook standing on his face, Usopp's and Chopper's combination attack with a nice callback to their fight in Alabasta, Nami's lightning rod attack) during the fight which is some points up from the previous fight scenes.
At the other set, Luffy and the three Neptune Brothers continue keeping Hordy away from Shirahoshi in order to lure the Noah away from the island. It is neat seeing them figure out that Hordy has done something to Vander Decken and trying to get Shirahoshi to change her course so that the Noah won't fall on the island when Decken dies or falls unconscious. Unfortunately, Decken knocks himself out and, thus, the Noah starts falling down. How will Luffy and the others manages to stop it and Hordy?
A good episode I'd say, but barely.
Manga Differences: -The whole sequence with the Neptune Brothers and Luffy trying to get Shirahoshi to change course is anime-only. They just went up until the moment Decken fell unconscious. -The small scene with the merfolk lamenting the fate of their island was also anime filler that was not there in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.

Episode 562: "Luffy Loses The Fight?! Hordy's Long-Awaited Revenge!"
Already losing? What the heck were you doing those last two years, Luffy?
In the vein of the last few episodes, it feels like we are progressing rather slowly with another episode where nothing much happens. The Noah starts falling and the Neptune brothers are in a bit of a pickle with the danger of the ship being about to crash on the island and their father begging them to not let it be destroyed due to a promise made a long time ago. Of course, this leads to an argument with Luffy who places more importance on the safety of the people on that island (I am sure even Robin would not mind him destroying such an historic artifact for saving people) but they all manage to see it as a problem to be solved first.
Of course, Hordy is the bigger pain in the butt being that Luffy is still unable to fight him at full strength due him being limited to his bubble and his attacks losing a lot of punch and speed under water. Luckily, they have come up with a plan to counteract this by having a giant bubble shot at the Noah to give Luffy a battlefield to fight on. Neat plan but it, of course, needs time to be executed.
Finally, after Luffy destroys Hordy's shark blade and gives him a heartfelt punch, Hordy takes a big bite of Energy Steroids and getting a physique that Superstar Billy Graham would highly approve of. This follows after Hordy has taken out Fukaboshi finally who apparently managed to learn Hordy's true identity...? What does that mean?
A decent episode all in all.
Manga Differences: -Nothing really that stood out too much save for the usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 563: "A Shocking Fact! The True Identity Of Hordy!"
*using the 'It was me all along!' meme for the umptienth time*
But before we look at Hordy's shocking identity...let's go to the battlefield again where Wadatsumi shows off his impressive power of blowing himself to enormous size which Sanji only comments on with mild interest. Well, if he is not even fazed by it, why should I be? In other news, the Neptune army joins the fight while also ordering an evacuation order for the whole island due to the possibility of the Noah falling down (with the spectators at the Conchcorde Plaza steadfastly refusing to evacuate due to their support of the Straw Hats which the Minister To The Right sells quite expertly), Nico Robin shows off that she really did master the Shadow Clone technique to get rid of Hammond (remember him? I don't blame you if you don't) in a cool scene whereby she also frees the human slaves who join the Straw Hats in their fight. All in all, a mixed bag on that front.
Meanwhile, Hordy's true identity harbours a truly horrid abyss which Fukaboshi puts into better words than I could. Basically, he himself has never experienced any harmful experience with humans but wants to keep the fishman hatred for humans alive because he and his commanders fear the change friendship with humans might bring. A really interesting take on a villain for this show (hampered somehow by an anime-only flashback in an earlier episode during this arc that Hordy and his men indeed had bad encounters with humans) and perhaps making him among the darkest villains in this show. Hopefully, the bubble maneuver will help Luffy in taking him out.
A good-decent episode here.
Manga Differences: -Sanji and Wadatsumi talking with each other before the latter does his "Blow Up" technique was anime-only content. The manga sets into this part after Wadatsumi has already grown. -The Minister To The Left arrving at King Neptune's spot is also a filler scene. Originally, we go into this scene when the Minister is already there in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.
Let us meet again the day following today!

Episode 564: "Back To Zero! Earnest Wishes For Luffy!"
Somehow I get the feeling that those field commanders are not everything they are cracked up to be...
This episode is far better than the previous ones because of the mood it sets. We get a look at the key events in the recent Fishman Memory from the point of view of Hordy from his childhood. The anime does really good use of its medium with those featureless shadows embodying the hatred of fishmen against humans, distorted voices etc. and really capturing the feel of someone's mind being poisoned from the environment in which one grows up. This was certainly the case here with Hordy growing up in the Fishman District and kudos to the anime for avoiding the mistake of making Hordy appear like a sympathetic figure because of it. It is obvious that his ideas are ultimately born not from firsthand experience with humans (though as mentioned the anime weakened that POV a bit), but just from being in this hostile environment where even stories about a good human like Rayleigh (which Hachi talks about) gets only derision from Hordy. Seeing him grow up is indeed an eerie and creepy collection of scenes and definitely evokes some real-life parallels.
What is also neat in this regard is Fukaboshi's admission of his failure as he only tried to superficially follow his mother's ideals but resenting humans deep down causing him to overlook the movements in the Fishman District that led to this problem today. It is really touching seeing a character admit his wrongness so openly and not trying to paint himself as a decent person which made it a pretty good scene. Ultimately, it ends with Luffy promising him to stop Hordy because they are friends which really touches Fukaboshi as well as the merfolk who overheard this conversation and who decide to stay on the island.
Meanwhile, we also get some fight scenes on the Conchcorde Plaza with Chopper being able to counter Dosun's hammer (showing that his Weight Boost form is now more monster-like than ever but he does not mind), Frankie fighting Ikaros pretty evenly and Zoro getting some nice shots in on Hyozo. But those scenes do not compare with the other scenes mentioned above.
Still, a very good dramatic episode here.
Manga Differences: -Other than the usual scene extensions, there was really nothing notable to mention here.
Later days!

Episode 565: "Luffy's All-Out Attack! Red Hawk Blasts!"
Well, it's a cooler name than Falcon Punch at least....
We are in the final laps of the fight against the New Fish-Man Pirates, it seems. On the Conchcorde Plaza Battlefield, we are wrapping up with the field commander battles, especially with a nice Brook moment where we learn a bit more about him having discovered the real power of his Revive-Revive Fruit Powers (that as long as his bones are not destroyed outright, his soul can rebuild his body). Otherwise, Chopper has apparently learned to control his large form that used to make him go berzerk (if his being able to have a convo with Usopp is any indication) and Usopp has lured Daruma into a trap of some kind (found a comment of his nice that he apparently lost his touch...he can now actually make things a reality that he used to lie about). With Frankie ready to use an ultimate weapon on Ikaros, Hyozo apparently going to poison Zoro after the latter sliced through his swords and Sanji and Jinbei preparing to take down the giant Wadatsumi, those fights will probably end next episode (more on the lengths of these fights there).
Meanwhile, Luffy, inspired by his brother it appears, unleashes a new type of attack called Red Hawk (where his Gear Second, Armament Haki-empowered arm gets engulfed in flames for some reason) that is able to do some serious damage on Hordy, making it seem like Luffy has won. Though Hordy seems to still have a few Energy Steroids to snack on (seriously how much did he pack before going out) so that match might still be up in the air regarding the result. Also neat was a moment with Madame Sharley and the children where she urges them to watch the fight until the bitter end to make their own decision whether humans are evil or not (also cute that they acknowledge that some members of Luffy's crew are not exactly 100% human). It will be interesting to see what happens next.
A good episode all in all.
Manga Differences: -Nothing much notable, just the usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 566: "Coming To An End! The Final Decisive Battle Against Hordy!"
Not to mention, his field commanders as well.
First, as mentioned yesterday, let me go on a bit of a tangent. I cannot help but feel that Oda made the Straw Hats appear too powerful in this arc. I can understand that it would not make sense to see them struggle and fight tooth and nail against their first challenge on their journey to the New World when they spent two years training (after all, it would have made it seem pretty pointless), but the field commanders should have been more of a threat than how they were presented here. It never appeared as if the Straw Hats were ever in serious danger and it was treated as a kind of warm-up battle before the real threats start appearing in the New World. It is a bit of a shame because the field commanders in the New Fish-Man Pirates had some nice designs and deserved being presented as a bit more of a threat than what they ended up as. And after having seen the TV Special "Episode Of Nami" (which is basically the Arlong Arc of the East Blue Saga condensed into a 2 h 30 min format) which reminded how much of a danger the Arlong Pirates were to Luffy and his crew then, it becomes even more apparent that the New Fish-Man Pirates were basically JTTS in this part of the series. It is also sad that there were no female field commanders that Nami and Robin could have fought against, relegating them to taking out the grunts (Nami) or taking out the equivalent of a Barry Horowitz/Iron Mike Sharpe/etc. (Robin). While it does not hurt the arc too badly, I feel like it could have been more.
That being said, the episode indeed features the Straw Hats ending the threat of the field commanders with some impressive techniques (Usopp's Impact Wolf, Frankie's Laser Beam, Sanji's Hell Memories, Brook's...freezing blade slash). And somehow Chopper is still adorable being that big and doing his usual shy routine.
But the cream of the crop in this episode is definitely the battle Luffy against Hordy. The anime actually managed to make this final stand-off better than the manga version by not making it more one-sided (more on that below). And Luffy's final attacks consisting of Gear Third-enlarged, Armament Haki-coated Gum Gum Elephant Gatling Guns is nothing short of impressive considering how much strength it used to cost him to use Gear Third two years ago. It might even be enough to destroy the Noah...but will Luffy make it on time?
A good episode again.
Manga Difference: -The final stand-off between Luffy and Hordy in the Noah is much longer in the anime which makes it better. In the manga, after Luffy's Red Hawk attack sends him crashing into the Noah, we immediately go to Luffy using the Elephant Gatling Attack to counter Hordy's shark-molded Water Shots and punching him unconscious. I like the anime version better because the manga makes Hordy look like as much of a push-over as his field commanders. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
Let us meet the day that follows today again!

Episode 567: "Stop, Noah! Desperate Elephant Gatling!"
Well, if Luffy's career as a pirate king does not work out, he can still become a pretty good one-man wrecking crew...
Yeah, with the New Fish-Man Pirates being defeated (well, the field commanders and the captain, at least, but the grunts should not be that big of a problem for the good guys), there is only one thing to take care of: the giant ship falling down on the island. And Luffy does a pretty good job demolishing the Noah with his Elephant Gatling attack, straining himself despite the wounds he has suffered at the hands of Hordy, all for trying to prove that he is now able to protect everything. Commendable determination and it is nice seeing the merfolk putting their trust in him, similar to how they trusted Whitebeard back then who made the island safe by making it his territory, and chanting Luffy's name.
Ultimately, Shirahoshi inadvertantly helps Luffy by calling upon the sea ponies...I mean, the Sea Kings whom we hear talking for the very first time. I like that among some of them are sea kings that we have seen in the very first opening or the short detour into the Calm Belt some 500 episodes ago. And hearing them talk they sound like reasonable creatures instead of the ferocious beasts we have come to know until then. Nevertheless, with them having stopped the Noah, the danger seems to be over for now...or is it?
A good episode again with a neat wrap-up scene including the Straw Hat pirates as well (Jinbei's comment on them was especially rather sweet for his person).
Manga Differences: -Luffy's attack barrage is quite a bit longer in the anime incl. a scene where he tells Shirahoshi to stay away from him. That scene is not in the manga at all. -The usual scene extensions.
Later days!

Episode 568: "To The Future! The Path To The Sun!" And all it took was some bloodshed! I am sure Queen Otohime would have been proud of that! We are now entering the wrap-up part for good in this arc, starting with the Sea Kings taking the Noah away to the Sea Forest. Have to say that it comes as a surprise that the sea kings are able to communicate rather normally which is at odds to their rather "wild beast"-like portrayal until this point in the show. We also learn that apparently not only Shirahoshi has this power, but Gold Roger was and Luffy is able to hear the voices of the Sea Kings for some reason. Might this be another reason for the specialty of the persons who have D in their name? Questions among questions... In the first wrap-up part, Luffy has to be treated due to his large bloodloss (with Chopper having to be carried around like a doll since his giant form takes quite a lot of energy out of him) but the merfolk are still bound by the law prohibitting fishmen to give blood to humans (despite their wish to give him blood). I found this to be a good moment showing that the acceptance is not yet universal regarding humans. Ultimately, Jinbei decides to give blood to Luffy leading to a rather shmaltzy but nice moment where the narrator gives a poetic overview over the stuff that happened describing the sharing of blood as the true path to the sun and the fulfilment of Queen Otohime's wish. Definitely a highlight of this arc. And so we are left with two questions: What does King Neptune mean with his sentence that the weapon that can destroy the world having awoken? And will Jinbei accept Luffy's offer of becoming his crewmate? Manga Differences: -Only the usual scene extensions. Until 'morrow!

Episode 569: "The Secret Revealed! The Truth About The Ancient Weapon!"
Why so angry, Nami? I am sure we can find a money analogy that would make you don't want to be a hero as well.
Before the reveal of the ancient weapon, however, we have the obligatory End-Of-Arc Victory Dance Party with lots of alcohol, meat, beautiful mermaid dancers (Ishilly <3...oh yeah, I forgot to mention last episode that the mermaids kidnapped by Caribou were found in the treasure hall of the Ryugu Palace while all the treasure was stolen.), an opera diva and a swing orchestra singing...a good time had by all so to speak. Always feels like a well-earned reward for the Straw Hats after a hard battle.
In other news, King Neptune has declared the Fishman District a forbidden zone with all the inhabitants (the former members of the New Fishman Pirates) being made to work off all the damage they have done under the supervision of the Neptune Army and all former human slaves of Hordy's crew being released to go as they please. Both wise decisions by the king (who really does not deserve to be as ignored as he was when trying a toast at the beginning of the banquet). Jinbei, meanwhile, has other stuff to do which is why he cannot as of yet join Luffy but would be very glad to do so in the future (which has the agreement of all of Luffy's crew).
In the final moments of the episode, we do learn a bit more about Joy Boy, the meaning of the Noah and the person he apologized to...the then-existing mermaid princess who had the same power that Shirahoshi now has: calling upon the sea kings. Which is why this power is considered a power that can destroy the world and the name we heard once before regarding an ancient weapon, Poseidon, was actually the name of the mermaid princess who had that power once. Interesting information.
All in all, a good episode again.
Manga Differences: -The gag of King Neptune trying to give a toast, only to be ignored, is anime-only filler. He does not try to give a toast in the manga. -Dialogue during the main part of the banquet scene is anime-added since those scenes were shown without any dialogue in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.
See you all the day after today!

Episode 570: "The Straw Hats Stunned! The New Fleet Admiral Of The Navy!" Wow, never thought my Superstar Billy Graham comparisons regarding the Energy Steroids would hold that much truth. The wrap-up continues unabated with some action thrown in as Caribou tries to kidnap Shirahoshi and almost succeeding, but luckily, since he is basically a JTTS, Luffy, Zoro and Sanji find him and thwow him to the floor...or rather outside of the palace. He fully deserved that for making a cutie pie like Shirahoshi scared and crying like that. Jinbei meanwhile plays a bit of exposition master in telling the Straw Hats about Akainu becoming the new fleet admiral in succession of Sengok, after the former fought with Aokiji for 10 days about that title (damn, those two must have had quite the conditioning to fight that long) as well as Blackbeard essentially replacing Whitebeard as one of the Four Emperors in the new world. Gotta love how Jinbei experiences Luffy's lack of news intake for the first time and how Luffy's crew is so non-chalant about it (love Chopper's line about what a captain is especially). In another location, the aftereffects of the Energy Steroids take their toll on the field commanders and Hordy, turning them into Grumpy Old Men (TM) even evoking pity from King Neptune himself. Finally, Nami sends the Monster Trio after Caribou who still has the treasure with him (making me think that if a villain ever turned Nami evil, she would be the most formidable opponent for Luffy) while two strange figures have appeared that are representatives of one of the Four Emperors, Big Mam. What are they up to? Another good episode. Manga Differences: -The lead-up to Shirahoshi's capture through Caribou (Shirahoshi lying down on her bed, Caribou appearing in his mud form above, sneaking along the ceiling until striking) is anime filler material. Originally the manga sets it after Caribou has already covered Shirahoshi and is dragging her down into his swamp. -The usual scene extensions. Tomorrow will be a break for One Piece Volume 68, so see you all on Sunday!

Episode 571: "She Loves Sweets! Big Mom Of The Four Emperors!"
Luckily, they keep her lair pretty hot. Otherwise her underlings would probably drown under all her saliva.
This episode serves mostly as an introduction to one of the four emperors, Big Mom aka Charlotte Lingling...and she is certainly big, probably as toll as one of the One Piece giants but her constant drooling certainly makes her very unappealing (not to mention that she is apparently a cannibal as she eats her own underlings?) Her M.O. appears to be that you pay her 10 tons of sweets a month and in exchange, she lets you use her mark to keep others off of your territory. If you do not pay...well, she destroys you as well as your whole country (as evidenced by an account of one of her underlings). And she does not make any exception.
This is brought to us by two of her underlings on Fishman Island: Pekoms, a lion who can walk and talk and manage to be cute while trying to be threatening (since Chopper has eaten the Human-Human fruit, this makes it strange in how he is able to be like this. Unless there's different models of the Human-Human Fruit) and Baron Tamago, a long-legged noble (?) with an eggshell for pants and adding Frenchisms to every sentence (-soir, -bon, -s'il vous plait etc.). Certainly an interesting pair. And it just so happens that the Fishman Island's time to pay has come but since Hordy destroyed the factory and they gave all the remaining sweets to the Straw Hats' banquet (well, it's their fault then, since I doubt anybody besides Chopper would have cared about there being no sweets) leaving them in a bit of a pickle...or more of a jam really since it does concern sweets.
Luffy, oblivious to all of this, blurts out his crew having eaten all the remaining sweets (much to the chagrin of the fishmen who tried to smooth things over) and being interested in the newcomers. But happiness turns into anger as soon as he learns why they are here and he makes a big decision: taking all the blame and anger of Big Mom on himself in order to keep the Fishman Island out of harms way and at the same time, making a challenge to Big Mom to defeat her. This amuses the latter who agrees to his conditions, directing all her anger at him when he appears in the New World.
All in all, a good episode again introducing us to another of the Four Emperors. But who is that strange three-eyed girl sitting beside Big Mom and is that Bobbin...Bobbin Threadbare who finally found his mom?
Manga Differences: -Nothing much besides the usual scene extensions.
See y'all 'morrow!

Episode 572: "Many Problems Lie Ahead! A Trap Awaiting In The New World!"
And Luffy is already knocked out before they even encounter the problems or the trap thanks to Nami...
We finish things up at the Fishman Island with the Straw Hats getting ready to depart after they gave all the treasure to Big Mom's subordinates (we also learn that Luffy would have probably been more understanding with Big Mom if it were about meat instead of sweets)...much to the chagrin of the royals since the box that contained the Energy Steroid, that was among the treasure, was rigged with explosives (and Big Mom would probably find that as funny as if it were a Jokey Smurf surprise). And as usual, despite their good attentions, the monster trio gets beat up by Nami, again emphasizing that she would probably be the most successful opponent for the Straw Hats should somebody ever turn her evil.
Meanwhile, Caribou engages Pekoms and Baron Tamago, thinking that they stole the treasure from him...but he proves to be no match for Pekoms who, despite his small stature and adorable beady eyes, appears to be a formidable fighter (where we don't know whether its a devil fruit or another type of power). Very impressive. Speaking of Big Mom's subordinates, we also learn that Jinbei's pirate group is allied with them (in order to keep the island protected) which is why Jinbei cannot immediately join Luffy's crew and has to get away from Big Mom first.
Finally, we meet some old accquaintences in the New World, namely Smoker (who has become vice-admiral and sporting some scars) and Tashigi (who is now captain but is still as adorkable as ever. Kinda reminds me of Sci-Twi from MLP Equestria Girls a bit with her new longer hair a bit) who capture the former human slaves of Hordy arriving at the surface. They are also apparently now working in a marine branch where only the bottom of the barrel marine soldiers work: ruffians who enjoy torturing pirates and don't respect authority (I bet they would be big fans of Stone Cold Steve Austin then). Does this forbode a new encounter between Smoker and Luffy (where Luffy with his new Haki powers will now be more of a match for him than in their previous encounters)? We shall see.
Another good episode.
Manga Differences: -Caribou awakening and noticing his treasure is gone is an anime-filler scene. The first time we see him awake in the manga is when he is already running around searching for the thieves. -In the manga, we get informed by a text info box that Pekoms has a 330 Million Berry bounty. In the anime, that bounty is mentioned by one of the spectators. -The first scene with the Straw Hats milling around and the Minister Of The Left going through the stolen items where he remembers the explosives in the box is a filler scene as well. We see him first in the manga running up to King Neptune during his talk with Jinbei. -The strange cutaways to the Neptune Army repairing the palace is also anime-only content. -Luffy and his crew on their way to their ship is also anime-only. The next time we see them in the manga is when they are already on the ship. -The pirate ships rising from the depths and the first fights are anime-only content as well until the G-5 marines arrive and Tashigi deflects a cannonball. -The usual scene extensions.
Later days!

Episode 573: "Finally Time To Go! Goodbye, Fish-Man Island!" And so we have to say goodbye to the most adorable being in the whole show so far...goodbye, Princess Shirahoshi. As the title indicates, we finally leave the underwater island for realzies...and that is basically it. Everybody says goodbye to each other (with Shirahoshi taking their departure the hardest), we get some funny scenes (Zoro and Sanji's bickering, King Neptune and the Minister to the Left deciding against telling them about the bomb after seeing how depressed Usopp and Chopper are) and as far as plot development goes, the crew receives a new log pose since even the magnetic fields of the New World islands are unreliable so a pose with three needles is required. This leads to another fun moment after a certain speciality of the new pose is explained, piquing Luffy's interest (the more a needle moves while pointing, the more dangerous an island is) much to Nami's and the other's chagrin. And so, after a sweet good-bye with Shirahoshi (although why do Zoro and Frankie not join in the promise? Strange) the crew goes up to finally reach the New World. What dangers will await them there? A good episode again. Manga Differences: -The whole flashback sequence at the end showing past events (Ace's death, Jinbei's bringing Luffy to his senses etc.) is anime filler that was not there in the manga at all. -The usual scene extensions. Until 'morrow!

Episode 574: "To The New World! Heading For The Ultimate Sea!"
Oh brave new world, that has such people long for it...
And with this episode, the Fishman Island Arc comes to an end with a Straw Hat Crew-centered episode as they ascend towards the new world (apparently, the ascension is faster than the descent since it only takes one episode compared to the six or seven episodes at the start of this arc). Many fun moments to be seen here (Nami electrocuting Sanji and Brook as they try to peep on her in the bath, Sanji only counting Nami and Robin after they went through the whitestrom, most of the male Straw Hats' chagrin after Nami tells them to get rid of the giant fish they caught) but also a bit of action (the ride through the whitestrom current). We also get a heartwarming scene when they come across a pod of island whales, the same type of whale that Laboon belongs to. This naturally evokes all kinds of emotions in Brook who feels inspired to sing "Binks's Rum". It really feels good to hear this sweet tune again and it really hits the right note in the ascent accompanied by the whales (who really like this song...apparently it has something that appeals to island whales).
And after emerging in style, the Straw Hats are ready to take on the new world...but they have to contend with marine ships first.
Another good episode in a row of them.
Manga Differences: -The appearance of the marine ships at the end is anime-added content. They don't encounter any marine ships at this point in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.
Let us meet the day after today again!

Episode 575: "Z's Ambition! Lily The Little Giant!"
Lily, probably the only character that can serve two fetishes at once.
And so we enter the next arc, the Punk Hazard Arc...or rather we enter some filler episodes tied into the One Piece movie that got released around that time, "One Piece: Z". Unlike the last time they did this, however, the tie-in episodes would not be finished before the movie started which will explain the strange point for a break that I'll take in the next few days.
Anywho, most of this episode is dealing with a stowaway on the Sunny, the titular character Lily, who is quite a cutie. Originally a giant, she can change her size due to the powers of the Mini-Mini Fruit, and she also has an appetite that would put Luffy's to shame. She is just such a fun character that should make this short filler break bearable. Fun scenes involving her getting chased by the Straw Hats as well as hearing about her father's cooking skills (well, when you're a giant I guess you won't have a tough time using a volcano for a grill. It sounds quite tasty though).
We also meet the villains of this arc who call themselves the Neo Navy led by a mysterious figure named Z whose henchmen involve a beautiful lady, a large guy...and another large guy who will probably be the main villain of this short filler break whose only notable feature is that he has a sheep who seems to follow his every emotion. Hopefully, we will get more interesting material out of him.
A decent start to this filler break.
Manga Differences: -Oh yes, it's filler....filler night!

Episode 576: "Z's Ambition! A Dark And Powerful Army!"
If the title said "Great And Powerful", I guess Trixie could sue them.
We go into the action part of this mini filler compilation with Nami putting on a pretty good plan to free Lily's father, Panz Fry, from the Marine (who are accompanied by Vice-Admiral Momonga. Certainly one of the more notable vice admirals whom we now know since the Water 7 Arc). Of course, a stealthy and well thought-out plan is not Luffy's forté and it is nice that Nami is now so used to Luffy's unpredictableness that she planned for such a contingency as well. And it is always good seeing the Straw Hats work together like a well-oiled machine as here when they fight the marines.
Things take a turn for the worse though when the Neo Navy attacks with their main man Shuzo who is apparently a former Marine soldier (at first I thought "What the heck is wrong with his arms?!" but then I figured that he is probably one of those Long-Arm Tribe members) and who has a pet alpaca that functions as a cannon as well (I guess we can guess whether its an alpaca that ate a weapon-based devil fruit or a weapon that ate an alpaca-based fruit). Otherwise, he just appears to be the usual enemy relying on brute strength to beat his opponents so he is not a very riveting challenger. But I am intrigued that Momonga will work together with the Straw Hats for now to engage the Neo Navy. Let's see what happens.
Some fun moments (Nami punishing Chopper and Brook for goofing off, Sanji again getting haunted by his Wanted poser), nice action and all around a good package make this a good episode.
Manga Differences: -So take...these filler wings...and let me fly again...
A bigger break this time, tomorrow for the One Piece TV Special "Adventure on Hand Island" and on Sunday for the One Piece Movie "Z". So, see you all on Monday!

Episode 577: "Z's Ambition! A Great And Desperate Escape Plan!"
Does it involve a Rita Hayworth poster?
The mini filler arc continues with a three-way dance between the Straw Hat Pirates, the Navy and the Neo Navy with nothing that interesting going on. Shuzo (the field commander of the Neo Navy with the long arms) is a pretty boring character who manages to keep Luffy at bay but he just offers nothing of value, character-wise or power-wise. And since Lily does not get involved much in the fight, I don't even have her making the fight a bit more watchable. So we see a pretty dull fight until we get a neat callback to the Sky Island Arc that allows the Straw Hats to escape the battle field...but not before Shuzo uses a Vivre Card as a sort of tracking device on them.
After a quiet moment (where I am even more looking forward to see Panz Fry's heavenly cooking), the Neo Navy appears again, showing that they are really nuts by going all kamikaze on the Straw Hats (since they used up all their regular torpedoes in the earlier fight). Will Luffy finally put an end to this? I guess we'll see in the next episode.
Yeah, a decent to meh episode. Nothing much that I can write about it.
Manga Differences: -"And if the law don't get her then I will...four little fillers..."
Until tomorrow!

Episode 578: "Z's Ambition! Luffy vs. Shuzo!"
Well, the vore fetishists will surely like this one...I think.
And so this small filler arc comes to an end with the Luffy vs. Shuzo fight taking up most of the episode's runtime. This fight also kinda pinpoints a bit of a problem with fillers: in this fight we are led to believe that this Shuzo, who is supposed to be only a field commander for the bigger evil that is Z, is on par or even stronger than Hordy Jones, the main villain from the last arc, given how Shuzo dominates Luffy for the most part. And he does not even appear to have any kind of special devil fruit power or anything, relying mostly on the CP 9's Six Powers and Haki to completely overwhelm Luffy. It feels really odd and should indicate that perhaps Oda should have at least a look from time to time at the anime to avoid such major "Huh?" moments.
Especially when Luffy can only win with the help of the one shot filler character of the day. That's a bit harsh probably considering that Lily is really adorable and it is a pretty neat idea (Lily growing inside Luffy to enable him to grow into giant size) and makes for a good visual and a satisfying conclusion to this small bit of filler. And I have to say that I now have a craving for paella after seeing Panz Fry's heavenly food (using the world's smallest volcano apparently)...*drool*.
And we end with Z conferring with his aide, Ain, and them on the verge of arriving at something called the First Island. What that is? Well, you have to watch the movie for that! I reiterate again that the timing of this was really weird with the second half of this filler movie tie-in arc airing after the movie already premiered (something that didn't happen for the previous one. Scheduling conflict perhaps?). Oh well, what's done is done and now we get into the next arc proper.
A decent episode to end the filler arc on.

Episode 579: "Arriving! A Burning Island - Punk Hazard!"
Why did Panz Fry leave already? This island would have been perfect for a BBQ!
We have finally arrived proper in the Punk Hazard Arc which clocks in at 55 episodes (incl. the preceding 4-part movie tie-in filler), making it only a bit shorter than the Fishman Island Arc. This episode mostly sets up the setting which is the titular Punk Hazard, an island that is consumed by fire around it for some reason (an oil field underground perhaps)? We also learn a bit about the Wano Kingdom which sounds like this version of our world's Japan from 1600-1865 (a secluded country where fierce Samurai reign) where I hope we visit that country sometime in the future.
The Straw Hats get to exploring after getting a distress signal from that island (that introduces us to this universe's version of an emergency call...a crying transponder snail. Well, at least it is less annoying than other annoying sounds in the world) and Luffy, Zoro, Usopp and Robin are the lucky ones who get to do it incl. Usopp getting his classic diseases in a funny moment. Punk Hazard is definitely a very hot place that appears to have been a former Navy facility before it was destroyed by whatever took place there.
Things turn intense when the group meets a dragon, surprising Robin understandably...but also Luffy, Zoro and Usopp for some reason. Um, don't you remember the Millennial Dragons you encountered 2 years ago? I know, I know, that was a filler arc and the anime makers back then could not possibly know that Oda would actually introduce a real dragon into this world but still....It's not like the anime makers would have had to rewrite anything significantly (just have the three who actually met the Millennial Dragons make some off-hand remarks about that before going back to the manga material).
Smoker, Tashigi and their G5 crew are also on their way to Punk Hazard so we should be in for quite a clash.
A good episode due to the neat introduction and some fun moments involving Usopp.
Manga Differences: -Anime Version: Sanji makes the lunch boxes and the meals for the others on the ship from a sea clam Panz Fry caught for them. Manga Version: Sanji makes the lunch boxes and the meals for the others on the ship from the deep sea fish they brought up with them when they emerged from underwater. -After Luffy and his group arrive on Punk Hazard, there is a scene change to the Sunny where the remaining Straw Hats eat the leftovers Sanji made for them. This scene did not happen in the manga. We see the Sunny crew again in the manga when they get abducted. -Smoker mentioning "that incident" referring to the events of the One Piece Movie "Z" is an anime add-on that is not said in the manga. -Zoro's flashback to him getting the sword Shuusui from the defeated Samurai Ryuma during the Thriller Bark Arc is anime-added content. No flashback appeared in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.
See y'all 'morrow!
