Episode 123: "That Looks Gator-ish! Luffy, Run To The Royal Tomb!" Don't sleep, Luffy! Don't be like Roman Reigns! The Luffy-Crocodile fight takes a bit of a break in this episode to focus on other matters...like Crocodile mercilessly stabbing Ms. All-Sunday after she becomes useless to him. Cannot say I am too sad about this since she was pretty mean to Tashgi earlier on and she seems pretty dangerous. Though one wonders what exactly those Poneglyphs are and why she is among the few who can decipher them. In that regard, the episode is a bit of the mediocre side in that while the scenes involving Crocodile, Ms. All-Sunday and King Cobra are pretty intense and dramatic, Luffy's scenes are pretty weak humor-wise and the Straw Hat scenes are again them searching everywhere for the cannoneer with Vivi finally deducting where the sniper hides. In the latter scenes the humor is also pretty thin and it is not as tense as the former scenes. Poor Tashgi though. At least she did not get stabbed through the throat as was hinted in the last ep. A run-of-the-middle episode this time around. Hopefully, it picks up with the Luffy-Crocodile Fight Round 3 next ep. Manga differences: -In the manga it is not shown how Cobra opens the entrance to the tomb which he does in the anime. -Otherwise the usual scene extensions. Until the day tomorrow!

Episode 124: "The Nightmare Draws Near! This Is The Sand-Sand Clan's Secret Base!"
Please...please kill Ms. Father's Day as quickly as possible. So ugly...
Round 3 of Luffy vs. Crocodile gets entered here with Luffy now having adapted so much to Crocodile's attack pattern that he goes to a final resort: a poison-filled hook that he does manage to hit Luffy often with. Also, instead of water, Luffy uses another liquid to attack Crocodile: blood (that makes it more dramatic than if he used, I dunno, sweat or something similar). Otherwise, the fight continues to be a decent affair but it's not the main focus of this episode.
The Straw Hats finally manage to find the location of the cannoneer after a mix of hilarious (Zoro getting redirected by the marines, the entire conversation when it turns out Sanji and Zoro are actually nearer to the cannoneer than the rest) and dramatic (Vivi witnessing a nearby rebel soldier getting shot down, Pell getting shot down by Ms. Father's Day) scenes. Most of it is pretty good but there are some annoying scene extension when we do a camera drive over the square at least three times which only serves to artificially prolong the episode.
Finally, we see the persons in charge for the cannon: the pair of Mr. 7 and Ms. Father's Day. Both look ridiculous and talk annoying so I hope that they are defeated soon.
A good episode I'd say as we draw nearer to the climax of this arc.
Aside from scene extensions, flashbacks etc., no notable manga difference located.
Tomorrow will be a break for Manga Volume 25, so see you on Wednesday!

Episode 125: "Magnificent Wings! My Name Is Pell, Guardian Deity Of The Country!"
Thank you Vivi for getting rid of Mr. 7 and Ms. Father's Day. You will always have a special place in my heart for it.
The pivotal scene in this one is of course Pell sacrificing himself to save both armies from being obliterated by the cannonball. The set-up for this is really well-executed with a flashback highlighting Pell's and Vivi's relationship, the silent ascension of Pell taking the bomb with him where only the ticking of the bomb is heard and the final explosion followed only by a declaration by Pell. Definitely one of the stronger scenes in this arc and I hope they do not do anything to lessen the impact later on.
Because of this focus, the episode is mostly on the dramatic side with only a bit of humor thrown in (Nami's Ballshot Catapult comes to mind). Love Nami's plan to get Vivi as fast as possible to the bell tower as well as her taking out the two most annoying agents of them all. The choice to reveal that the cannonball has a timing device by leaving everything else silent and only letting the ticking slowly emerge to the front was also a clever choice.
In the Luffy/Crocodile part, it is mostly talking with hardly any action. The exchange is nice but compared to the other part it is not much. Still, grudgingly kudos to Crocodile for looking so far ahead.
Again a good episode where we probably reach the final part of the battle next episode.
No major manga differences to detect here.

Episode 126: "I Will Surpass You! Rain Falls In Alabasta!"
And so...the fight between Luffy and Crocodile comes to a close.
And it could not have been capped off with a better episode. The final fight sequences really bring across Luffy's anger towards Crocodile with his final attack, Gum-Gum Storm, breaking through Crocodile's sand swords and breaking him through the sacred tomb's roof. The finishing touch gives the BGM during this scene which really emphasizes the sense of accomplishment that Luffy has achieved, surpassing one of the Seven Warlords of the Seas. All in all, the fight Luffy vs. Crocodile in all its rounds was a truly epic fight between two fighters on equal footing. Very good.
Just in time because Vivi was on the verge of despair since despite the bomb exploding a good distance away due to Pell's sacrifice, the fight still continues. Really effective how you start to hear Vivi's cries for them to stop fighting start quietly and then get more louder as Nami realizes what her friend is shouting. A pretty emotional scene by Nami as well who starts crying out of sympathy for her friend.
Again, the new pieces of BGM in this episode are perhaps among the best OP has put out until this point, really giving off a sense of accomplishment that we have climaxed the Alabasta arc with this episode and now only have the denouement to deal with.
Last, a very good episode to finish the high point of this arc.
Manga Differences: -Besides some of the flashbacks and some scene extensions, nothing major to report.
See you tomorrow!

Episode 127: "A Farewell To Arms! Pirates And Different Ideas Of Justice!"
Conglaturation, Straw Hats!!! You have completed a great adventure. And prooved the justice of pirate culture. Now go and rest our heroes!
In the first section of our denouement for the Alabasta Arc, we come to the immediate aftermath with King Cobra lifting the spirits of both the rebel and the royal army, Igaram returning (wonder how he survived that big explosion way back when), Tashgi arresting Crocodile and the other Baroque Works agents (curiously except Ms. All-Sunday and Mr. 2, the later who we see escaping), the whole country rejoicing under the first rain in three years and Smoker seizing an artificial rain-making ship assisted by a strange Marine woman who sometimes speaks in the third person of herself. The most adorable moment is however the Straw Hats falling asleep from all the exhaustion in the middle of the city. That was such a cute moment and it makes you just want to give them some blankets right there and then.
However, the most interesting scene comes at the end which is eerily relevant of today's times with the government trying to cover up the fact that pirates saved Alabasta from being usurped by Crocodile. Very unnerving how the HQ contact just goes on and on with showering praises upon Smoker and Tashgi while ignoring Smoker's protests, ending with a bad-ass moment by Smoker.
IMHO the scene before is even more important with Tashgi having to admit that only out of her own weakness, she had to help the Straw Hats. She could not follow any justice but had to do something to keep Crocodile from succeeding with his plans. A really important moment for her accompanied by a kinda sweet gesture from Smoker (in his ways) to lift her spirits.
All in all, it is a quiet episode but after the non-stop action of the last episodes, this was kinda needed. And the character moments for the marines is enough to put this ep into the good category.
Manga differences: -Again only the flashbacks, scene extensions and nothing more.
Until tomorrow!

Episode 128: "The Pirates' Banquet And Operation Escape From Alabasta!"
Konafa needs to be a dish in Shokugeki no Soma someday.
This episode just makes me feel happy all inside. Sure, we had an arc end in a party previously (the Arlong Arc) but here it somehow feels even more satisfying given that the stakes were higher and the enemies tougher, not to mention it is the first Grand Line enemy they defeated. The whole first part of the episode with the Straw Hats doing their own thing, the banquet and the bath afterwards (though it is strange, shouldn't the bath come before the dinner?) is just incredibly funny and uplifting and just makes you feel good that everything will turn out for the best.
Yet despite the toneshift in part two it does not fall apart. You really get a feeling for Vivi's dilemma as she talks to Karoo about whether to stay as princess in Alabasta or become a pirate to join her friends. Especially since the whole scene is silent, it makes it even more important.
Another major development here is that Luffy's power level...uhm, I mean bounty rises from 30 million to 100 million berries while Zoro gets his first bounty with 60 million berries (even higher than Luffy's initial bounty) although they don't know about it yet.
Furthermore, we see Mr. 2 Bon Clay do a face turn and become friends with the Strawhats again. Guess we see how that one turns out.
I bet for those seeing the anime were wondering: "Huh? Why is Jango, the former Black Cat Pirates' field commander, a navy sergeant and teaming with Fullbody from the Don Krieg arc?" This is something that was explained in one of Oda's chapter cover page stories (basically Jango beat Fullbody in a dance contest, helped him against pirates and after he was captured, Fullbody risked his career to save him because they became friends through dancing and finally Jango enrolled in the navy because he and Fullbody fell in love with Ms. Hina. Weird, I know.)
All in all, happy episode makes me full of smiles.
No major manga differences besides the flashbacks to report here.
See you tomorrow for Christmas Eve!

Episode 129: "It All Started On That Day! Vivi Tells The Story Of Her Adventure!"
I know the title makes it sound like a clip show, but its really not.
Emotion-wise, this is what I consider the true Alabasta Arc finale. In the first part, we have the heroic sacrifice of Mr. 2 Bon Clay and his crew that enables the Straw Hats to get to their meeting point with Vivi and escape Black Cage Hina's formation. While it does have a funny moment (Usopp's lucky shot taking out two enemy vessels), this is mostly fully finishing Mr. 2's face turn in a pretty heartwarming albeit sad way, emphasized through the Straw Hat's reactions to him going into his final fight. The picture composition with he Swanda sinking and going up in flames along with the music really makes this a pretty emotional scene.
And it gets even more emotional with Vivi deciding on staying in Alabasta to help her country and against joining the Strawhats. That goodbye scene is pretty tearjerking as the Straw Hats silently show their marks to answer Vivi's question if she will be still their friend when she meets them someday again. Pretty well done (although it is weird that they start up the first opening song only for it to be stopped shortly afterwards).
Otherwise, there is also a bit of humor in here (Igaram cosplaying as Vivi, the king apparently trying to get a look at Vivi in her underwear) but the episode is mostly focused on bringing the Alabasta Arc to an emotional end.
In that case, it is a very good episode and a worthy finish to the Alabasta Arc...no wait, there is still one matter coming in the next episode.
Manga Differences: -We actually see a pic of Vivi's mother in the anime. Something that we did not get in the manga. -More close-up shots of the crowd reaction to Igaram cross-dressing. In the manga we only get far-away shots from that crowd during this part.
Until tomorrow!

Episode 130: "Scent Of Danger! The Seventh Member Is Nico Robin!"
The seventh member will always be Vivi to me, dammit!...Then again, she was technically the sixth member to join.
So yeah, the biggest reveal of this episode is that Nico Robin, the woman previously known as Ms. All-Sunday, vice president of Baroque Works, becomes the newest member of the Straw Hat Crew. Charming her way through the others in a hilarious manner (the interrogation done by Usopp, how Nami was easily swayed by her bringing some jewels), we also learn her motivation that she searches for something called the Rio Poneglyph, a stone pillar containing the real history of the world...whatever that is supposed to mean. Her reasoning for joining the Straw Hats is also kinda macabre (Luffy saved her when she wanted to be buried alive under the temple), but I guess since she has no other goals currently, she might as well do that.
In a weird way, the first part of the episode feels like that should have been the end of the last episode since we get a final look at all the inhabitants we met in Alabasta and what most of them will be up to (including some of the filler episode characters) while the first ending theme plays in the background. We also learn that Pell survived the bomb blast...somehow...and is alive and well. OK, Alabasta Arc, I forgive you for Igaram and Pell this once. But I sure hope the next arcs will stop with these Disney fake-out deaths. Anyway, it is a pretty nice farewell to Alabasta though again, it feels like it should have been at the end of the last episode somehow.
Still, all in all, a final good sendoff to the Alabasta Arc and we shall see what the next arc will be about.
Manga Differences: -Of course in the manga, we don't see the Sand Pirates as well as those fake rebel soldiers given that they are anime filler characters. -The encounter of Scissors with a Sandora dragon is also anime filler. -The talk about Lashes (who wants to join the Supersonic Duck Squadron) between the prison guards is also longer. -We actually see the prisoner escaping the navy guard and going to attack Hina in the anime (in the manga we only see him the first time when he is beginning his attack). -The anime also reveals Pell much earlier not only through his voice but also through showing his clothes (albeit still leaving his face in the shadows) whereas in the manga we only know its him when the doctor shows his head garb that he was forgetting. That scene where Pell sees his own grave is also anime-filler. -The interrogation between Usopp and Nico Robin is also much longer compared to the manga.
Until tomorrow for a new arc...or is it?

Episode 131: "The First Patient! The Untold Story Of The Rumble Ball!"
Well, since I won't spoil anything now, have the third One Piece opening now:
We are now at that weird point where we have finished an arc but the anime producers did not want to start the new arc immediately, so to compensate, we now get a bunch of filler episodes in between.
As mentioned before, One Piece's set-up offers a better opportunity for filler because of the island hopping and at least, it won't be 75 episodes like they did with Naruto. And here (small spoiler ahead) we get at least filler episodes focused on the individual Strawhat members at least.
So for the first filler episode, we get a...nice one.
That's about all one could say about this one. As Nami mentions at the end of the episode, it was a peaceful day in a long time and that's the way this episode feels. No action, little humor...just a relaxing episode focusing mostly on Chopper (and Nico Robin as well).
The flashback story about Chopper treating Dr. Kureha as his first patient was simple but told in a nice way, acknowledging that while Dr. Kureha seemed to treat Chopper coldly on the outside, there were moments that she showed her appreciation for his strive to become a good doctor as her one-time praise for his medicine showed. However, don't be fooled by the Rumble Ball part of the title because it is only shown in a smaller flashback compared to his treatment of Dr. Kureha, so no special focus on this.
The episode is also sweet how Nico Robin tries to make a connection with Chopper through accompanying him fetching water and asking him about Dr. Kureha which leads to Chopper gradually warming up to her by the end of the episode (despite Nico Robin sitting separately from the Straw Hats at the campfire).
Otherwise, the parts with the other Strawhats picking fruit from the island were not that notable.
So, all in all, it was a decent episode that did not feel like a waste of time.
All of this was anime filler.

Episode 132: "Uprising Of The Navigator! For The Unyielding Dream!"
Luffy, Zoro...you are not in the desert anymore. Shouldn't you put those desert clothes into the attic for now.
Unlike the last episode, this one is less of an enjoyable one. Mostly because a large part of the first act is dealt with that annoying as hell mail-order salesman. I just waited for the moment when they would beat him up, stuff him back in his turban shell and kick him back into the far reaches of the sea. But alas, they don't so we have to listen to his long, unfunny sales pitch without even some quality Straw Hat material to break through the boredom.
It gets a bit better in the second act though. The flashback to Nami's childhood was nice and it was good to see Nami so enthusiastic about her work. Not to mention getting a nice running gag with Nico Robin reading the whole episode and a cute Nami/Chopper moment. Otherwise, this is again a peaceful and quiet episode (except for the brief tornado scene).
So all in all, another decent episode but not on the same level as the last one because of that friggin' salesman.
Again 100% filler material.
See you 'morrow, lads!

Episode 133: "A Recipe Handed Down! Sanji, The Iron Man Of Curry!"
What a coincidence that I watched this episode today when I went to a Thai restaurant and had a dish with red curry. OK, its something difference from the Japanese curry rice served in this episode but still...
Another actionless episode with barely a hint of humor as well as being quiet and tranquil...yet, it is a better episode than the previous one.
Mostly because Tajio is actually a pretty likable one-shot character unlike the salesman from yesterday's episode. He certainly has a pretty observant mind to do the curry all by himself based on his observations of his chef as well as quickly picking up on Sanji's hints. A pretty well-done kid.
Sanji is also very enjoyable in this ep, showing that he subtly does care about anyone that shares the same dream as him (a nice hint to how Zeff came to take Sanji under his wing) and being a pretty good teacher himself.
I can understand why most would find this a boring filler episode since it mostly deals with cooking a curry. But as somebody who started in the past year the cooking manga Food Wars aka Shokugeki No Soma and became a fan of it, I appreciate this sort of detailed showing how a dish is made. I would have preferred going more into it instead of seeing Luffy's antics on the marine ship.
All in all, a far better episode than yesterday and currently 2nd place behind the Chopper filler episode.
Another day, another episode with 100% filler material.
Until tomorrow, mateys!

Episode 134: "I Will Make It Bloom! Usopp The Man And The Eight-Foot Shell!"
After eating, why not enjoy a fireworks show, indeed.
Unfortunately, this is a rather middling episode. Kodama and her grandfather Odama are OK and have interesting designs with their face paint but they are nothing special. The story is your basic "fulfilling the dream of the parents which killed them" story and while Japanese fireworks are awesome, the fireworks shown here are rather run-of-the-mill.
The episode also hurts a bit in that unlike the previous fillers, we do not get a flashback to young Usopp connecting him to the character-of-the-day's dilemma. While it could be considered original that they do not follow that route, it is kinda unfair that (spoiler ahead) Usopp is the only one that does not get some sort of flashback. I am sure with some thinking they could have come up with something.
Finally, another piece and quiet episode with no action and only a bit of humor. Technically decent, but pretty meh all in all.
100% filler here, too.

Episode 135: "The Fabled Pirate Hunter! Zoro, The Wandering Swordsman!"
Gaaaah, it's Yusaku and Jonny again! This is gonna suck!
Actually, no, no it really wasn't. Because this time in this flashback episode, they were actually decent characters, not all about that dudebro stuff, but just weaklings with a heart of gold who talked like actual human beings. And the scene where they stand up to Dick The Bandit is surprisingly well-done and made me even warm up a bit to them because they never gave up to inspire the ranch kid despite standing no chance against the bandits. If only they could have been portrayed like this way back when they first appeared.
Otherwise, this episode is also about Zoro who we learn has trouble controlling his strength and breaks two swords in fair regularity. While a decent conflict, it immediately gets resolved by the end, making it a kinda pointless endeavor.
This episode is a bit more dramatic and action-packed compared to the previous ones but not up to the same level. Yosaku and Jonny's involvement is getting beaten up by the bandits and Zoro manages to defeat all the bandits he encounters with one hit, leaving no room for a decent action scene. Though it was cute how the ranch kid helped Zoro in the end.
In the end, we learn that it was probably Zoro who turned Yusaku and Jonny into the persons they became, so that's a black mark on Zoro unfortunately.
Still, it is still among the better filler episodes and a pretty good one.
100% filler to report here again.
Tomorrow will be a break for One Piece Manga Volume 26 so see you on New Year!

Episode 136: "Zenny From The Island Of Goats And The Pirate Ship In The Mountains!" Happy New One Piece Year 2018! First, I need to address a miscalculation of mine. Because of the way Crunchyroll has ordered the arcs and not having seen these episodes for a long time, I thought that today's episode would start the next arc. But nope, we still have two mini filler arcs (this one 3 and the next one 5 episodes long) before finally getting to the next one. Really want to ask Crunchyroll for their weird structuring. Anyway, this arc starts with the Strawhats landing on a strange island with lots of goats and a weird old man named Zenny. While he is not too annoying, he does come across like a bargain basement Gaimon without the unique character design the latter one had. And instead of weird animals from the Wuzzles or Avatar universe, we have goats...lots and lots of goats. Boy, that sounds exciting, doesn't it... I give it that it offers the dramatic point that Zenny only has 3 more days to live which causes the Strawhats to shower him with kindness which is kinda heartwarming to see. As for the villain side, we seem to get only a fox-eyed Navy sergeant as opponent which does not give great hopes for exciting fights...but then again that was not expected with only 3 episodes here. Otherwise, it has a neat chase scene in the beginning, a few funny moments (laughed mostly at the jokes related to Zoro's lack of direction) and does not come across as nerve-wrecking. So, a run-of-the-middle episode basically. 100% filler in the new year here as well. See you tomorrow!

Episode 137: "How's Tricks? The Designs Of Zenny The Moneylender!"
Why do I suddenly get some craving for goat cheese? Yum yum.
So, yeah we are still stuck on the island with Zenny and his goats and we finally learn about his backstory being a moneylender who wanted to become a pirate until getting stuck on the island. Very tragic and stuff.
Again like I said last episode: this would be infinitely more interesting if we did not have a similar scenario with Gaimon in this series already. And the Navy Sergeant with the fear-inducing name Minchy continues to be a bore.
The episode earns some bonus points for a really funny scene where Nami loses the ship in a game of chess to Zenny, leading to some funny banter between the Straw Hats until Nico Robin, like a baws, wins the ship back again. The most curious thing however is if Chopper misdiagnosed Zenny's life expectancy or what the dealio is here.
So yeah, another middling episode. But its only one more episode in this mini-arc fortunately.
100% filler confirmed.
Until 'morrow, lads!

Episode 138: "Whereabouts Of The Island Treasure! Attack Of The Zenny Pirates!"
Wondering if berry bills do taste like berries. Chopper needed to ask those goats that.
So yeah, this marks the end of the little filler arc and it ends as was the beginning and the middle: meh. The attacks of Zenny and his crew on Sergeant Minchy's ship was kinda funny as was another scene showing Zoro's absolute lack of direction. The ending was also a bit touching in a way but there just was not any excitement to it. Sergeant Minchy got taken out very easily, Zenny's 3 days left to live was forgotten about in a way and we did not even get an exciting scene where the Strawhats escape the Navy Fleet. Instead, everything happened off-screen.
Yeah, nothing much to say here. Hopefully the next filler arc gives me a bit more to talk about.
Run-of-the-middle again here.

Episode 139: "Legend Of The Rainbow Mist! Old Man Henzo Of Luluka Island!"
Sanji made quite the shocking experience in this one...
OK, non-joke aside, this is actually looking like the beginning of an interesting filler mini-arc compared to the last one. We get the set-up for an interesting mystery with the rainbow mist and why Henzo is so adamant on researching it, the port town with its rainbow tower is a good looking locale and we get a lot more interesting villains here compared to the last one (Lake with his man-powered electric suit is a hoot especially) with their obsession on taxing everything.
Add to that some good humor (Nami's obsession with her shopping bags that shall not come to harm is especially funny) and some good action (the start where the Straw Hats escape the marines and the fight Sanji vs. Lake) and you have a satisfying filler episode.
I wonder though if those two marine officers from the beginning will play a part again in this arc. The male one's finger bomb ability just seems too good for a one-shot. But we shall see.
All in all, a good intro to this arc and I look forward to see where it goes.

Episode 140: "Residents Of The Land Of Eternity! The Pumpkin Pirates!"
The Land Of Eternity...is a ship's graveyard? I think I'd rather go to Neverland, thank you very much.
The arc about the Rainbow Mist continues with a more flashback-driven episode this time around, giving us backstory about Henzo, why he has been looking for the Rainbow Mist all this time and it also reveals a shocking fact about the current mayor of Luluka Town, Wetton. Furthermore, there are some hints that the Pumpkin Pirates have connections to people in the present...curiouser and curiouser.
Being about taking a trip into the past, this is a bit more quiet episode compared to the last one. Still, the scene where the Straw Hats engage the Pumpkin Pirates is pretty exciting (starting with an eerie scene where we just do a pan over the graveyard while a bell chimes every now and then), there are some fun scenes (Zoro waking up at last, Wetton's grandson accepting a measly coin as sufficient tax and letting the others off the hook) and all in all, I say it again, it feels a lot more interesting compared to that Zenny arc.
So, yeah, really curious where this all will go. A good episode this one was.
It's not 100% Strawberry, it's 100% filler!
