Coutinho, to the shock of nobody except Liverpool fans, has reportedly handed in a transfer request. If it were true, I wouldn't be shocked. Just seems strange that the owners prepare a statement about him not being for sale and then an hour later, Sky claim he's handed in a request. Which is then swiftly denied by the club.

Typical tactic to drive up the price. "Here's £90 million." "Not for sale." "Okay, £100 million." "Not for sale." "£110 million." "Well, okay then." Coutinho has already said he's like to join Barca if an amicable deal can be reached, and that never seemed more than lip service to the fans.

But most Liverpool fans were already resigned to the fact he was going. Don't know why you said to the shock of no one except Liverpool fans though, most of us have seen this exact same thing happen with our two previous biggest sales and both times it ended with the same result.

The general social media reaction has been "it's all bullshit, he's staying with us, FSG said so, the club said so, it's just Sky stirring the pot." Perhaps it would've been better for me to say that it's a surprise to all but the most naïve and blinkered Liverpool fans.

The general social media reaction has been "it's all bullshit, he's staying with us, FSG said so, the club said so, it's just Sky stirring the pot." Whilst it's not exactly the first time Sky have stirred the pot and it certainly smacks of Sky saying this at the exact right time to get maximum exposure on their claim, I tend not to bother with social media reaction on things like this. Whilst Liverpool fans have been accused of "delusional" and "living in the past" and there are certainly some who reinforce that belief, more fans of Liverpool (and of just about every club in the world for that matter) have accepted that Barca and Real are the two biggest clubs in the world with almost limitless funding and Liverpool can't compete with that. As much as any club can claim they're not a "selling club", if you get offered money like that, things change in a hurry. As for Coutinho himself, he is a quality player and on some days, world class and unplayable. Barcelona are prepared to shatter their transfer record for a player who isn't even the best Liverpool player of the last decade. I'd love him to stay but he's not irreplaceable. I just hope Liverpool spend the money better than how they spent the millions they got for Suarez.

It's a rare thing for Barcelona or Real Madrid to come in for a player and not get their man - deplorable as the behaviour of some of their players during the negotiating phase may be (the "stop holding Fabregas hostage" situation of a few years ago, for example).. It's just a question of squeezing as much money as possible out of them. As for how the money is spent, Klopp's done a pretty good job of outlining targets thus far (at least in the front end of the pitch) so it'll be interesting to see if they can get a quality replacement or two before the transfer window shuts.

Predictions:
1. Manchester City 2. Chelsea 3. Arsenal 4. Liverpool 5. Tottenham 6. Manchester United 7. Newcastle 8. Everton 9. Crystal Palace 10. Southampton 11. Bournemouth 12. West Ham 13. Leicester 14. Swansea 15. Stoke 16. West Bromwich 17. Watford 18. Burnley 19. Huddersfield 20. Brighton
Lacazette to score 20+ goals, but get a slump around March to drop out of race for golden shoe.
Manchester United will be a bit closer to the top of the table, but will ultimately fail to even qualify for CL. Mourinho gets the boot after the season.
Shakespeare the first to get fired. He is replaced by Sam Allardyce, who comes back from retirement.
Everton to struggle with goalscoring, Tottenham to struggle because of lack of depth.

I've been grouchy about football lately, it was back too early, the transfer prices were even more stupid than usual, clubs that will be moaning about winter breaks going on world tours...
Yet that first half was the type of game that reminds you why you do love the sport.

Holy crap what a game! We have to address some serious frailties at the back but going forward we looked dangerous. Lacazette can get 20+ goals this season.

Great game. Leicester were stupid to sit back with so much time left. It always results in the attacking team getting through.
As for Coutinho, he's stupid. Had he kept quiet, Liverpool could have worked out a deal where he joins Barca next summer for a massive fee. By handing in a transfer request so late in the window, he's alienated the fans, and probably won't be moving anyway.

First two games of the season has seen 13 goals. I wouldn't mind if that set the tone for the rest of the season.

Chelsea down to nine men but pull two goals back. Hell of a finish to this match.
