Chris Waddle was nicknamed 'Magic Chris' when he played in France because when he got homesick he watched Paul Daniels videos.
Bobby Robson was named 'Bobby Five-Oh' at Porto because they won so many games 5-0 under his management which might be the best nickname and reason for it ever. I mean, if you got to pick your name and reason, that would rank higily wouldn't it?
Within one session of his first test playing for South Africa in England, Monde Zondeki was nicknamed 'All Hands'. All Hands Zondeki.
Farheze Maharoof the Sri Lankan cricketer always gets "Maharoof is on fire" chants.
And my personal favourite is John Eales, the great Australian rugby captain. One of the best locks ever (big tall dude who jumps and pushes a lot) who also was a superb goalkicker. Nicknamed 'Nobody'. Because Nobody's perfect.

Jerry West, "Zeke From Cabin Creek"
Shingo Takatsu, former White Sox closer from Japan, was nicknamed "Mr. Zero", due to his ERA in his home country. (In this country, that could be the speed of his pitches, in which many have failed to register on a radar gun. Should have been ticketed as a moving violation.)

Cesar “Dave” Azpilicueta (When he signed for Chelsea, nobody could pronounce his name)
BenJarvus “Law Firm” Green-Ellis (His name sounds like a law firm)
