I was hoping he'd pull off the most rock n roll recovery of all time.
My favorite song and video of his. R.I.P you absolute legend.

As someone not intimately familiar with his music, where should I start in his discography? I'd say Full Moon Fever (it's damn near a Greatest Hits collection by itself), then Hard Promises (The song "Insider", in particular is amazing), Damn The Torpedoes, Into the Great Wide Open (lots of good ones there), or if you want, pick up his Essential or Greatest Hits albums. Granted, some of his best stuff ain't on those, but it's a start.

He was more of a favorite of my mom's then mine, but this is a huge loss to the music world and just sad in general. I'll remember him best for voicing Lucky on King of the Hill and for his song Runnin' Down a Dream being a theme for the Washington Nationals.

My mom was a big fan of early MTV. Some of my earliest memories were his MTV videos. He was such an iconic performer. If people want to search out some of them, I'll post a list off the top of my head. I'm sure I'm leaving some out, but these songs are burned into my memory.

I Won't Back Down was my mom's anthem during difficult times. I wasn't a huge Tom Petty fan, but I'm still sad to see him go. He was hugely talented and seemed like a really nice, down to earth guy.

Tom Petty was one of those guys who just always around, it never occurred to me that he could go away or anything.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Greatest Hits and Tom Petty's Wildflowers are two of my all time favorite albums period. And on top of that, Tom Petty just seemed like a nice, cool dude in general. RIP to a true legend. It's a sad day for the music world.

I heard this song, and the Waiting (2 of my favorites), a few days before going to the hospital. I was very nervous, but for a while, that message "there ain't no easy way out, but i won't back down", was peaceful to me.

Well f***. Just f***. As much as I enjoy Tom Petty's solo stuff, and stuff with The Heartbreakers, The Travelling Wilbury's 1st album are one of my top 2 or 3 goto albums along side Zeppelin II and The Beatle's Rubber Soul. Way too young to be gone

seemed like a really nice, down to earth guy. That's the part that upsets me more than anything. Given the times we live in, we could use all the nice, down to earth people in the public eye we can get. Tom's message was always togetherness and happiness. I'm sad he's not here to keep spreading it.

MTV Classic is showing non-stop (save for ad break) Tom Petty.
