He would have been "free" but what really would have been wrong with that? I don't see Beetlejuice being a husband type, and I could easily see him just ditching her after the ceremony. Other than being annoying, what was the big deal with him getting his freedom?

I don't imagine Lydia would have been too thrilled with that, though I will say, Winona Ryder's delivery on "You asked me, and I'm answering: Yes, I love that man of mine" is great.

If we're connecting the movie with the cartoon in that manner, then Beetlejuice straightened up pretty well after they started datingand came to care for Lydia quite a lot.
