This is one of my favorite pieces of Americana. I still maintain that during the summer of Punk, Punk should have cut into a Raw broadcast doing the same schtick but wearing a Vince McMahon mask. It’s kind of amazing that no one has ever come forward to take credit for it. I imagine hacking a TV signal is a serious federal offense that might have a lengthy statute of limitations. (or none at all for that matter.) Could possibly lead to some serious jail time. I came across an article about the incident that had the following:

Also it's been so long even if someone claimed to be the one who did it, would people believe them?

Back then, though, it took a lot more skill and know-how (and ability to acquire equipment) to hijack a broadcast signal, I'd assume. From what I remember hearing on the case and others like it, it was relatively easy to do. Really all they needed to do was broadcast from close enough to the central antennae to interrupt the signal. It wasn’t all that hard for the first network to get their signal back either.

There's a local article about it. WGN was quick to end it because people actually watch the news (especially Sundays during football season) and there were competent people running things. The reason WTTW ran it for as long as they did was basically because somebody just ran a tape and walked off, not realizing something screwy was going on while they were away.
As for the story that surfaced years ago, the guy claiming responsibility was more or less lying.

To be honest I'm quite surprised it hasn't been played off or come up in some form of Doctor Who canon. It'd be fairly easy to work something around it. I even whipped up a mock Big Finish cover for it a while back.

Even if they can't use "Max Headroom" they could still at least wink and nod at it.

This thing introduced me to the Lost Media Wiki which took up a lot of my college time.

I also heard that a man came forward and said it was him, his younger brother who had autism, and a friend who pulled it off but authorities have said there is no way it could have been them.

And what was his beef with Chuck Swirski? His Momma didn't get out the salami and cheese when he was younger.

like I said in a previous thread a while ago, to take over WTTW and WGN the same night, means they had to be somewhere close as to interrupt both transmissions, those familiar with Chicago know that WGN and WTTW are pretty close to another, so anything between Addison and Montrose probably does it, just tracking where it could have come from that gets tricky. Lincolnwood neighborhood would be too far, and Roscoe Village would also be too far, so basically anything from Lane Tech at Addison and Western down to downtown wouldnt work, and anything Montrose and Western down twords Lincoln Square is out. So if they wanted back then, could have probably figured the signal strength to hijack both in a night and probably easily pinpoint it from there. there is a radius to work within if they wanted.

I just take the incident as an attack on WGN since it seemed pretty heavy handed on what was said at first, including Clutch Cargo which was once broadcast in syndication on there. I assume the only reason they interrupted Dr Who was because the initial WGN disruption wasn't carried through entirely. I assume had WTTW also switched over, this guy would've tried it again on another station. So someone at WTTW wasn't doing their job!
