Bad anime/manga protagonists and Hajime no Ippo's latest chapter. Not enough space in the title. HnI's latest chapter spoilers too people. So HnI is a manga I catch up with every few months or so when I'm not busy. Come to find out that 1202 (been going on since the 80s) came out today so in my downtime I decided to peep it. After reading it I had to make this thread. The series is also known for having mega-long fights so for a while we've been on Ippo's latest boxing match. Basically, dude lost his last match and he a long arc where they thought he was punch drunk, he was debating on whether to continue boxing, he had to rebuild himself and work on his moves and he eventually after that long character arc he got to it. He wasn't damaged at all and was in tip-top shape. Anyway, he was doing this for 3 years real time. Since 2014 they've been on this. So the chapter comes out and I'm just gonna post some pages from the last few chapters for yall including the latest. Spoiler time. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} So... Ippo lost the fight. He's officially punch drunk. He's also retiring due to a promise he made to his "girlfriend" earlier so that's it. This could end up being a timeskip. It could end up being the end of the series but I gotta ask... Do you know any main character of a series bitched out this hard? Who loses his last 2 big fights and has been on a downward slope for over 3 years? I've never seen anything like this for any manga or anime character. For all the crap about Naruto dude actually wins his most important fights. Ippo had multiple goals in this series. 1 was that Miyata fight that the author backed out of. The other was seeing Ippo's new Dempsey which we never saw and the other is become world champion which he couldn't do. Anytime he faced a world ranker he got his ass kicked. Like, dude hasn't really accomplished any goals in the series for years. It's crazy. I don't know what the mangaka thinks about this shit but wow, are you serious? Anyone know any other anime/manga protagonists that have been damaged for years like this?

Maybe I'm way off but how badly has Shinji Ikari been f***ed over in BOTH continuities to the point where it's gonna take a major asspull to fix him in the current one?

That's one series I never got into and one of the reasons is Shinji's character. From the jump I didn't like him for some reason. I've seen a few clips and it seems like he's a pushover to me lol.

That's actually my point though. He gets made to look like a complete chump in spite of the fact that he gets the occasional moment where he pulls off some seriously awesome shit. It's like an anime that was made by future members of WWE Creative.

Ippo has sucked for about 10 years now, which is sad because I used to love it.

Not sure if this counts as a bad anime/manga protagonist but Ataru Moroboshi of Urusei Yatsura wouldn't fly in today. At least in the West.

Shinji's character is meant to be a realistic take on the whole 'world-saving teen' trope. Basically, the author was saying that, in the real world, if a kid Shinji's age was suddenly forced into a situation where he and only he could save the world from giant alien invaders, they would puss out just as hard as he did, and even if they did manage to stick it out and win, they would still have to deal with a shitload of psychological issues in the aftermath. That said, I didn't like Eva anyway.

I don't know if there's a single anime protagonist more pathetic than Ash Ketchum. Cliche answer and all but dude's successfully won only one championship in the past 20 years worth of adventuring, he's constantly cutting himself off at the knees for no apparent reason by ditching all his powerful Pokemon on a routine basis, he once lost to someone who was having their first Pokemon battle ever, and I'm relatively certain the amount of gym leaders he's beaten on the first try with no shenanigans can be counted on one hand.

Yeah, just read the chapter and... wow. Yeah, I kinda see this leading to a time skip of sorts. Ippo marries Kumi, keeps working with his mom on the fishing boat business while also helping out as a trainer in the gym until someone notices he still has "the spark in his eyes" and we get the impossible comeback. Meanwhile Takamura might have gone up a couple of weight classes, Aoki and Kimura might be on their last legs or also retired, Itagaki will have a title shot and everyone else that matters is better off in some way, except for Miyata who is still furious at Ippo because this is manga and their are eternal rivals or something.
I really doubt it's the end of the series, since nothing's been talked about it and it would be a big effin deal on the community if it did.
Anyway, yeah, Ash Ketchum in the answer here. And, for all his accomplishments, Jaden/Judai Yuki went out with a loss as well.

That...is actually a nice pace of change kinda.
I only followed Hajime No Ippo until his first fight after the fight with Miyata fell through (that scarred Thai boxer that Miyata beat once during his trip abroad early in the series) but considering it follows a linear time progression (i.e. characters do get older) and it is fairly realistic from what I remember.
While it is a tragic event, I find it kinda refreshing to see a shonen series where the protagonist might not be able to reach his goal and his dreams. Perhaps they might just do a short cut and let him do a final match against Miyata or the mustachioed world champion (dunno that name) or otherwise let him realise that the most important thing about his boxing career was the friendships and persons he met and let him settle down with Kumi (that's the "girlfriend" you mean, right)?
Still, I am curious if any of the other characters has retired until that point (the guys from Ippo's gym, his Kansai rival, Kumi's brother etc.).

While i was never a fan of the series ,or any of its creator. I too welcome this change. Shounen could use it.

He has beaten quite a few Gym Leaders first time around and won two Championships, to be technical. Also, he has saved numerous towns/cities/egological systems and the entire Universe on multiple occasions. Even without Championships (And the loss in Indigo was all kinda of bullhonkey), he does have a pretty good track record.

Yeah Kumi's the one I'm talking about. But the thing with Ippo is that he takes so many Ls unlike most Shonen protagonists. He's still not officially dating Kumi yet (hence why the girlfriend is in quotations), he lost his previous fight before this one, the Miyata fight won't happen it seems, he still hasn't been able to show off the new move he's been working years on, he's punch drunk, the guy just never gets a straight win without any backlash. It would be a different story if he got something nice every once in a while, just something straight like Luffy beating the big arc bad and then getting a nakama or something but it just never happens with Ippo. He used to be great in the earlier part of the series but for the longest time since he's gone beyond Japan it's the same situation. He's constantly outclassed. I swear we was just talking about something like this happening not to long ago. Yeah I remember us talking about how stagnant it was in another thread lol. Little did anyone know that Ippo would basically still be on the downward slope.

Isn't Guts basically the poster boy for Heroes who fail?
Naruto went from someone who said that Fate was for losers into something that pout and cries whenever things aren't going his way and refuses to grow up and idolizes and calls guys who've committed genocide the coolest

Naruto gots a W every once in a while though. The guy rarely lost and for everything he's done that's ridiculous he still gets followers and he still makes people believe in what he says. Ippo however still has his own people not believing in him at times.
