Yeah, as much as I love A New Hope, Carrie's shifting accents got really distracting. Mark Hamill was also really whiny as Luke (more than I thought was necessary). Fortunately, both got a LOT better in the next two movies.
At least Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing were there to kill it.

Daisy's been great. I look forward to see how important Rey turns out to be in the larger mythos. Obviously they're going that way, whether that's light or dark side of the Force.

I'm going to defend Carrie, at least, by saying that she probably subconsciously thought Peter Cushing wouldn't have taken her seriously if she didn't change accents. It also could have been George's direction because James Earl Jones shifted his accent from Mid-Atlantic to English as well.

Just get her stunt double to to take over the role. Darth Maul sure has changed a lot over the years.

Daisy Ridley replaced with Ridley from Metroid.
Make it so, number one.

Not sure why the world has decided this makes him a whiny character.

Off the top of my head..
He whines about wanting to go to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters instaead of doing his god damn chores, god damn it Luke.
He whines to his Uncle and Aunt about having to stay on the farm for another season. Damn it Luke!
He whines to Threepio about Tattooine and how he's never gonna get off the planet. Damn it Luke you JUST met him
Whines to Threepio about all the trouble f***ing R2 is gonna get him in.
He's whines and a little pissant to dangerous strangers in Mos Eisly.
He whines to Han that he's not such a bad pilot himself.
Bitches about the Falcon.
Bitches about Hans piloting skills.
Whines to Han about only caring about the money constantly in the film.
Whines to Leia about Obi Wan getting got. People die kid get over it!
Bitches about Biggs not having his back during the attack on the Deathstar.
I mean..it's fine. He's a young kid. Young kids tend to be whiny, self absorbed petulant brats. I don't know how much of it was the intended character and how much it was Mark being a young man himself at the time.

Luke has to whine at first, because it makes his character arc into a serious Jedi more profound

Yeah, Luke is totally appropriate as a frustrated teenager
I always took Leia's shifting accents as intentional, like she used her royal accent when dealing with Tarkin or something.

For a real life example... I grew up and still live in Iowa. When I hang out with my buddy from Wales my accent tends to pick up on things from him. When I worked on a highway in the middle of Amish country and had to work with them daily for an entire summer I picked up on little things.
It's very common for your own accent to have fluctuations based on what you are currently hearing.

Luke's whole arc was a literal coming of age hero's journey.
Him being whiny kid in the first one is pretty clearly by design.

Edited the thread title to essentially say the truth so people don't get confused.
