ZAZ were so awesome. In fact we probably need another poll on which of their movies is the best. Personally I'd nominate Top Secret. Just the funniest movie ever made, though it's probably a bit too Inside Baseball for some people since you really need to be a film buff to get it. It's one thing to spoof Casablanca, but that film has an extended spoof of The Conspirators for crying out loud (a Casablanca knock off also starring Paul Henreid in a similar resistance fighter role). The wildly inventive gags (Swedish bookstore in reverse, the climatic underwater saloon brawl) and the hysterical Elvis Meets the Beach Boys soundtrack, it's just the best. I'd probably put Airplane #3 on the list after Top Secret and Naked Gun 1. For its reputation there's a lot of jokes that really don't work in that film, and any scene with that Stephen Stucker guy is terrible. I think it's because he is actively trying to be comedy relief in an absurd comedy, while everyone else is hysterically deadpan. That and the film is basically a remake of Zero Hour, with much of the same dialogue. David Zucker was on Gilbert Gottfried’s podcast a couple weeks ago. Really fun listen.

Because some people talked about the TV show, this gives me a good enough excuse to post this amazing bit of comedy.

Top Secret is hugely underrated, I think; I never even knew it existed until about 25 years ago when it was shown randomly one night. Once I sussed out it was a spoof and recognised the ZAZ style of comedy from Airplane and Naked Gun, I knew I was in for a treat. 'And I'll miss you most of all, Scarecrow!' always makes me laugh, and has been shamelessly stolen by me many times over the years.

It was great to hear the history of Airplane. And I have to begrudgingly agree about his comments about Nielsen - he was much funnier when playing the straight man. When he tried being outright funnier, it didn't often work, and never as well as in the Zucker movies. Also he talked a lot more about BASEketball than I imagined he would have.

That and the film is basically a remake of Zero Hour, with much of the same dialogue. If I'm remembering an old commentary right, Stucker pretty much saved the film. They were going to cut all of his scenes out since they were so over-the-top compared to others but when they showed an advanced screening, he was the only thing the crowd laughed at. Turns out the crowd they had gathered for the screening were mostly migrant workers who didn't speak much English and no clue what the rest of the film was about.

They’re playing on Starz this month. Might marathon them through the app.

First one was the best by far. It had a lot of funny bits, like the Baseball bloopers. One other scene I loved.
I wish it wasn't off screen, I love to have seen Frank do that. The ironic part is she said they were good actors, perhaps that was the problems, they were convincing Frank thought it was real, can't blame Frank for that.
That being said, as much as I love the movies, I think I perfer the TV series.

I once showed the first one to this girl. She didn’t get it all. “Why is he using a vacuum to clean the base??” “You see, normally they use that little brush, that’s what makes it so humorous.”
Jokes are better when you explain them.

Thanks to the first one I spent my childhood thinking breasts made an awooga sound when touched. Imagine my surprise when I found out the truth.

The umpire who said "You can't throw an umpire out of a game", that is Joe West. I wonder if he got umpiring lessons from Drebin because he stinks. I take the umpiring of Drebin / Polanco over Joe West umpiring any day of the week.

Angie Tribeca is great if you enjoyed the Naked Gun movies.

Gotta go with the first one, though I do love 2 and 1/2 as well. The third one is not as good as the first two but I still enjoy it. Especially the Phil Donahue / Oscars scene.

My favourite scene is where Nordberg gets shot a lot and goes from stumbling back off the side of the boat to having several minor inconveniences happen.

Since we're on the topic of ZAZ films, how about Kentucky Fried Movie (while not technically one of theirs, they did write the screenplay)? I saw the Fistful of Yen parody long before I saw Enter the Dragon, which led to some inappropriate giggling when I finally saw EtD. The High Adventure talk show and Thats Armageddon are also classic ZAZ style gags.

Check out this video:
This one was good, too, though I liked the other one better:
I also found one on GTA IV:

The ironic part is she said they were good actors, perhaps that was the problems, they were convincing Frank thought it was real, can't blame Frank for that. I actually disagree. I think not seeing it makes it so much funnier to think about. Another example of humor where you aren't shown anything is in Planes Trains and Automobiles, after they stay the night in the hotel where Neal has to give the attendant his watch, they are trying to start the car which had burst into flames the night before. Del accidentally backs the car into the hotel room completely demolishing the front wall before hightailing it out of there. I can only imagine later what the attendant's face was once he went outside and saw that.

The bit about Drebin shooting the actors in the park is a riff on that similar scene in Dirty Harry, where Harry shot some nutjob in the park and the mayor was like "Okay, he's got a point."
I think the downfall of these comedies is when they just blatantly started ripping stuff off instead of having an actual plot and spoofing stuff in the process. The Hot Shots movies are the turning point, where it was obvious they were doing blatant parodies rather than spoofing genres and occasional scenes. Just wondering but does anyone actually like Hot Shots 1 more than 2? The 2nd one is just so much more memorable with Saddam and what not.

Top Secret is the funniest movie I've ever seen.
First Naked Gun movie is my favorite. Second is solid. Third one wasn't very good.
Nielsen worked 1000x better as the straight man than trying to out-chew the scenery compared to the rest of the cast.

One gag that always cracks me up is from Part 2
Commissioner: Do you realize that because of you this city is overrun by baboons Drebin: Well, isn't that the fault of the voters
