Still think it was a bad decision to not choose them as the main villains for a TV special located at the beach.

If they can keep most of the same staff together, I won't mind if Season 9 is indeed the last leading to G5 with a new cast (perhaps the grown-up CMC and other characters with the mane cast doing cameos from time to time). Just because this series ends does not mean that the franchise has to, too.
Furthermore, if the sales figures are still good.

Thinking about it...isn't there another species we could have gone to instead of a pony for the non-pony six?

Apparently, Flim and Flam's debut episode still has not aired officially on UK TV. but it's on the sky kids thing though, don't know if it's still edited out BECAUSE BEING PISHED ON CIDER AND BEING FIVE IS A TERRIBLE THING!
