The journey is more important than the destination. All entertainment is inherently predictable. We know the Rebels will defeat the Empire. We know Harry will kill Voldemort. We know James Bond will save the day and get the girl. Predictable is not bad. But the path we get there is what has to be good. If we accept what happens on the journey, then what happens at the end, we will buy because the path we took to get there was worth it.
In October 1995 when Shawn Michaels collapsed on Raw, we knew he was going to win the Rumble, and then the title at Wrestlemania. It was crystal clear what was going to happen, but the build to get there was wonderfully done and we loved the conclusion even though we saw it coming from a mile away.
In 2010 when Bret Hart came back and started his feud with Vince McMahon. Once we knew it was going to be them 1v1 at Mania, we knew the ending was going to be Bret locking in the Sharpshooter and making Vince tap. This is an example of a journey that was done very badly. It took wonky turns and was done poorly. Even the match was terrible making the obvious ending more of a chore to get to.
Now just a couple years ago with Reigns beating Triple H at Mania. That was an obvious ending that was 2 years in the making. That was an example of an obvious ending that maybe they should have changed, but personally I don't think there were any actual better options.
Wrestling is, and probably should be, predictable. What WWE in particular needs to do better is the journey to get there.
