With Star Wars Week. Another good question. For me since I saw Jedi first it already was spoiled for me

I mean...yeah. It's pretty standard for The Heroe's Journey to kill off the mentor.

Quite frankly, if you switch off your weapon in the middle of a pitched battle, you deserve everything you get.

Yeah when I first saw the Star Wars original trilogy I started with Empire and I think I ended with New Hope .. I was very young when I first saw them so my memory was hazy. So the fact he was a ghost, it was obvious he was not going to make it to the end credits of A New Hope.
But let’s pretend it’s 1977 and you are seeing Star Wars in a theatre for the first time... Would you have seen Obi Wan’s death coming? Maybe. Alec Guinness was the biggest name at the time in the cast, his credit has an “and” prefix which usually means it’s a significant role but not there for whole movie (but there were no opening credits so you would not know that unless they had credits on the theatre posters).
But you can probably guess he is going to bite as soon as you see Darth Vader standing before him with his light sabre lit up. If Vader was the main villain there was no way he was doing down that early in the film to the old guy.

Would SW be the first movie that didn't have Opening credits I think it was a rule and Lucas got into some shit for not including them. But if I remember The Godfather didn’t have any either. I just remember the company logo, black screen while film’s theme played, then ‘Mario Puzo’s The Godfather’ appeared on screen, then opening “I believe in America” scene starts.. unless the credits appeared over those scenes like the way modern sitcoms do.
