Only found out about this recently. I must say, as a US citizen, the concept of a fried potato/French fry sandwich never occurred to me. Low carb hell.

I've been hungry and scavenged through my fridge, found frozen french fries (usually tater tots actually) and bread, and made a sandwich out of it before. Never realized it had an official name or cultural identity though.

My American fiancee was very surprised by the concept, but it's totally natural to me.

Never heard of it.
But it's not much different than what I've heard called a Pittsburgh sandwich.
Though that's usually just fries on a burger instead of the fries actually being the sammitch.

I've heard of it, but never had it. Isn't the bread also buttered? I figure that probably helps the fries adhere to the sandwich bread any and not spill out after the first bite.

As per Wikipedia: Despite it being a staple of British food, I've only ever had it with fish fingers or sausages as part of the filling.

As a proud Black Countryman, it upsets me that there's people who don't have concept of the chip butty.

I mean, is there actually another way of eating chips without sticking some in bread? A few proper chipper chips (like Leo Burdock's with all them damn fine crispy bits) on a slice of buttered batch loaf and topped with ketchup is a valid argument for our continued worth as a species. It has to be chipper-style chips too, as french-fry style chips don't have that optimal mashy-to-crispy ratio necessary for sandwich nirvana.

As an Northern Englishman, it a a bit of a staple. They’re also good, pls try American friends. Once you’ve grown accustomed to those you can graduate to crisp buttys.

My dad never sat down for a meal without making a sandwich out of it. Chip butties were a key part of my upbringing.

I was actually on an Aer Lingus flight recently that was selling crisp sandwiches as quasi-delicacy "that your mammy used to make." 5 euro for the privilege, which is hilarious as crisp butties were our staple lunch in secondary school when we couldn't afford any of the fancier fresh stuff. Also the finest hangover food man has produced: one of Supervalu's freshest baguettes, butter it up something major, spread a packet of cheese and onion Tayto/King through it, smush that mother up to ensure a solid spread and prepare to rejoin humanity as a clear-minded citizen. Coldest can of your chosen soft drink is an absolutely vital accompaniment.

As my fellow countryfolk have said, they're a staple food here. Always butter the bread.
Didn't realise there were other FAN peeps from around the North West/West Midlands!

That, I've seen people do in person, usually putting them into peanut butter sandwiches. Guessing it'd be largely a texture thing, since I can only assume the taste of peanut butter would dominate that sandwich.
