Oh hells yeah.
In the UK we make everything into a sandwich. Crisp sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, fish finger sandwiches....
EDIT: And I'm also from the West Midlands, just to add to the contingent already in here.

As an Northern Englishman, it a a bit of a staple. They’re also good, pls try American friends. Once you’ve grown accustomed to those you can graduate to crisp buttys. That, I've seen people do in person, usually putting them into peanut butter sandwiches. Guessing it'd be largely a texture thing, since I can only assume the taste of peanut butter would dominate that sandwich. I can see how that would work. I've seen much worse, like one of my mates in high school used to put cheese and onion crisps on chocolate spread sandwiches. We're no longer friends.

I don't know if this is a Scottish/Glaswegian thing but I've always known them as chip sandwiches or a roll and chips. Calling it a "butty" sounds too English.

Not in a while, nowhere around Leeds uses vegetable oil instead of beef fat, and it's just not the same when you cook your own.

As my fellow countryfolk have said, they're a staple food here. Always butter the bread. Didn't realise there were other FAN peeps from around the North West/West Midlands! Proud Halesowen lad here, about ten miles from Birmingham. Oh hells yeah. In the UK we make everything into a sandwich. Crisp sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, fish finger sandwiches.... EDIT: And I'm also from the West Midlands, just to add to the contingent already in here. I'm from Staffordshire (not far from Stoke). We should get a Central news region meetup organised

Americans don't have chip butties? Not so much the "chips on bread only" style, but we do have stuff like a Primanti Bros. sandwich from Pittsburgh (fries added into a giant sandwich), a horseshoe (open face burger/sandwich, fries on top and smothered in cheese sauce), etc...

I like a chip butty but the sausage sandwich might be the pinnacle of all things culinary.

I've heard of it, but never had it. Isn't the bread also buttered? I figure that probably helps the fries adhere to the sandwich bread any and not spill out after the first bite. As per Wikipedia: Despite it being a staple of British food, I've only ever had it with fish fingers or sausages as part of the filling. Only Gordon Ramsay could take something so simple and make it so complex.

glad we don't have anyone from Wigan, they'd be banging on about the virtues of a "true" pie butty, food slapped in between two pies.
they're a bit weird in Wigan.

Americans don't have chip butties? Nope. We have sandwiches and burgers with french fries inside, but I've never seen just a french fry sandwich.
